Deaf Club’s “Pain in the Assery” is a Stark Response to Never Forgetting 9/11

As a New Jersey resident born and raised, I have distinct memories of September 11, 2001. Yet now, almost 25 years detatched from the attacks, we have way more clarity as to what happened and why. Sure, it’s good to “never forget” what happened, but we also need to remember why it happened. And such is the call of grind/crust punk/crossover outfit Deaf Club‘s track “Pain In The Assery”, which features a pretty wild music video directed by Indecline.

Released as part of the band’s upcoming sophomore album We Demand a Permanent State of Happiness, the track is a very in-your-face indictment of what went down, starting off with the audio of Iraq war veteran Mike Prysner dressing down then President George Bush for the lead up to war following the September 11 attacks. The video leaves no question as to what the song’s about, either.

Speaking of the track and its meaning, Justin Pearson explains the world view that went into it:

“I’m fully aware of the complexity of what 9/11 was and still is. I see how it resonated in different directions, starting with a low IQ political puppet on an aircraft carrier fumbling through a poorly written speech in front of an arrogant banner reading ‘Mission Accomplished’. The dollar store PR stunt which only gradually got into focus for various people at some point showcased the ongoing business of global terror perpetrated by the U.S. Government. We can easily look back and see a linear trajectory predating the G.W. Bush Administration heading backwards to the Clinton administration when the government continued the war in Afghanistan which was started by the previous Bush, and before all that, with the Reagan administration bombing parts of the Middle East while fucking around with the Iran Contra scandal.

“You’d think we could see it now with clear focus in relation to the U.S. Government’s support for genocide in Palestine, and today in DC, with the infant stages of a visible police state. Yeah, we can pick a side in a two party system who are just inbred cousins of a bigger system that always points towards war, the business of war, and the lack of humanity, as well as the lack of intellect to negotiate peace. So you can ‘never forget’ 9/11, and you can also just forget, because the politics of war are not concerned with anyone’s wellbeing.”

Deaf Club’s We Demand A Permanent State of Happiness will be released via Three One G and Southern Lord on September 19, but you can preorder your copy today.
