Mustaine’s (Probably) Jokes About Wanting Megadeth’s Last Show to be on the Moon
If there’s one thing that can be said about Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine, it’s that the man dreams big. When faced with a hard childhood, he struck out on his own, detemined to make something of himself. He’s a self-taught guitarist that not only joined Metallica back in the day, but ended up creating his own empire in Megadeth. And now, at the tail end of his career, he’s thinking big again — as in, concert in space big.
During a recent interview with Metal Hammer, the apparently most non-chalant person in metal stated that he wanted to see his band close things out in the void.
“I hope we’ll be playing up in space. I think that will be a really fitting climax. And I’m not talking about on the side of a vomit comet. A gig on the moon, a full moon landing, that would be cool.”
Now, I know what you’re all thinking — “but Hesher, how could a band play in space? Sound doesn’t travel in the unending vacuum of space” — and you’d be right. Of course they’d probably be in a space shipr or something like that, duh.
But logistical questions aside, Mustaine said he got the idea for leaving Terra Firma for some zero-G metal came about thanks to the likes of Katy Perry, William Shatner, and other celebrities that famously made the trip thanks to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin.
“I saw they sent up a bunch of celebrities into space and I thought ‘Well, if them, why not me?’, you know? I’m just watching how that all progresses. I know Elon Musk and Richard Branson were working on interstellar travel. I think people are going to be travelling to space a lot sooner than you think.”
When asked whether he was kidding or not, Mustaine didn’t really reword his thoughts or change his mind. He sounds like a man that’s dreaming big once again.
“People already travel over 40,000 feet altitude, and when you get to that kind of atmosphere you’re basically already in space. So I do think it’s going to happen. The question is, are people going to be able to inhabit the moon?”
You know what? Fuck it. If the sky’s no longer the limit for ultra-wealthy hobgoblins, then why can’t one of the biggest metal bands play in the depths of space? He’d definitely get out there before Metallica did, which would be a huge feather in his cap. All he’d need to do is figure out how Dirk Verbeuren would be able to play drums without gravity.
Megadeth’s self-titled, farewell LP is set to release January 23 of 2026 via BLKIIBLK, but you can preorder your copy today. If you’d like to catch them here on Earth, there are already some tour dates lined up. You can check those out below.
