VAN HALEN ON-STAGE DISASTER ENSUES IN NORTH CAROLINA

Monday, October 22nd, 2007 at 9:48am by

The Internet is unforgiving. Previous mishaps like this might be talked about, but now anyone with a built-in video recorder on their  camera can spread anything to the whole world in minutes. Watch below as a disaster unfolded due to a synth track miscue in Van Halen’s famous “Jump” on their current “reunited” world tour stop in Greensboro, NC.

“What happens when you play back a prerecorded synthesizer track at 48K instead of the intended 44.1K? The whole track plays back a little bit faster and at a slightly higher pitch, that’s what. A dissonant musical mess ensues, trapping the guitarist and bassist in an on-stage musical hell with nowhere to go.” [Gizmodo]

Give credit to the guys… they certainly try their best to cover up the obvious calamity which is beyond their control. Miscues be damned, I’m still psyched to see this tour with Axl at Madison Square fucking Garden on November 13!

I had such a great time at the Chicago stop last week, I just don’t have the heart to watch this. I’m surprised this kind of thing doesn’t happen more often.

Maybe Eddie should learn to play like Geddy, with his insane multi-tasking talent.

DLR did a good job adjusting pitch and speed, but poor Ed was stuck sounding sour. Since when was David a drum major? And giant mics are not in any way phallic, eh?

To the average fan, it’s unnoticeable, aside from EVH looking and sounding lost.

wait…why didn’t eddie just play at the key the synth was playing at instead of trying to play the song the way it normally is..??

Because the key it ended up being in doesn’t exist on a guitar. He would have either had to play in between frets (if such a thing were possible) or bend every note — he did his best, but it was physically impossible.

I’ve been on stage with a terrible monitor system and the inablity to hear the guitar, making it difficult to find the right key. It’s embarrassing. Eventually it got worked out but it sucks. Maybe VH could afford a live keyboard player.
