PROGRESSIVE NATION 2009 IN THE WORKS? PORTNOY SEZ SO.

Monday, June 2nd, 2008 at 5:31pm by Vince Neilstein

Judging by the massive success of the inaugural 2008 edition of Progressive Nation, Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy has already declared in a statement that he plans on resurrecting Progressive Nation for a 2009 edition “with a great list of bands that I am already considering.” Which is great news to us, because this year’s lineup of DT, Opeth, Between the Buried and Me and Three was fucking stellar. Allow me to make some suggestions to Mr. Portnoy for the 2009 run that have no basis in reality whatsoever:

  • Protest the Hero
  • Textures
  • Sikth (bring ‘em back from the dead!)
  • Arsis
  • Dillinger Escape Plan

Anyway, back to reality: Portnoy also said the band plans to release a DVD later this year and that he aims to be working on a new album towards the end of the year (“when the kids return to school in September”).

Here’s a recent interview from Metal Injection with keyboardist Jordan Rudess, filmed at the first night of the Prog Nation stop in NYC.

I haven’t stopped listening to old days born a new since I picked it up. Same with Arsis’ latest.

  2. jaime says:

great imaginary line up, – textures. I really, really need someone to explain to me why Textures is considered anything but a rip off artist. They sound EXACTLY like meshuggah, and then go to sounding EXACTLY like FNM; there doesn’t seem to be an original bone in their musical bodies. Seriously, i can follow the logic of why you like/don’t like alot of the bands you write about, but this band is just so derivative, i dunno where their appeal is to you guys.

  3. JW Gacy says:

I have an idea for Prog Nation ‘09

    Dream Theater
    Opeth
    Between the Buried and Me
    3

Fuck man, I’d kill to see all those guys in the same night again.

  4. ThePimento says:

Wow, great suggestions. I would pay more to see that lineup, especially if Protest was headlining. Too bad they always want to play first so they can drink more.

  5. i think it would be awesome to see them, with some bands that they hand picked for other shows. In London they picked To-mera to open up a show for them. And Portnoy or Petrucci released a statement about the band Unexpect, praising the shit out of them. It would be cool to see those guys on the same bill.

  6. Sidric says:

    you forgot meshuggah.

  7. Wayne says:

Yeah, that’s not a bad wishlist there. Dillinger would be a great headliner, one I’d actually not walk out on.

  8. thestarsinafix says:

the best line up would be:
    Dream Theater
    Opeth
    Porcupine tree
    Angra
    Ihsahn
now i know this is a longer list, but i’m thinking of it more as a longer show. And then Portnoy, Akerfeldt, and Wilson can do that collaboration they’ve been talking about doing.
    that would be amazing

  9. Devin says:

BTBAM and Protest the Hero. All you need.

But if BTBAM is not in it, I probably wont see it. But then again PTH will be there so…

  10. Chrisfallen says:

Should be DT and BTBAM again… turn it into a massive touring festival (internationally as well) like Ozzfest or something though and include:

    Dream Theater
    Opeth
    Between The Buried And Me
    Arsis
    Textures
    Ihsahn
    Explosions In The Sky
    Sigur Ros
    The Decemberists

    etc etc etc…..

  11. Heff says:

    Dream Theater
    Amorphis
    Dark Tranquility
    Into Eternity

    are my suggestions

  12. Wander says:

Textures would be nice, but still think Dream theater must headline an event like this. This would be nice line-up if the come play in Europe:

    Dream Theater
    Symphony X
    Pagan’s Mind
    Circus Maximas
    Riverside
    Textures

  13. Eric says:

    My Suggestions:

    Dream Theater

Between the Buried and Me (2 Sets, lol, the best band ever, aside from DT)

    Ankla

And some of the bands you other guys listed (not Opeth), cuz I’ve never heard their music…….

  14. Drage says:

Grab Nevermore, Cynic, and Protest the Hero for 2009 tour!!!

  15. ITSVAN says:

this whould be the ultimate line-up

    DREAM THEATER
    SYMPHONY X
    OPETH
    AYREON

  16. dtopeth1 says:

yea…this is gonna be just as BIG AS GIGANTOUR.

Progressive Nation 2009 is gonna be a must for at dt fans, opeth fans, btbam fans…

and as for 3…I want them to change it to disturbed or mayybe….oh I dont know…TOOL!

    prog nation 2009 lineup:

    Dream Theater

    Opeth

    Between the Buried and Me

    Tool (and/or) Disturbed

  17. dtopeth1 says:

    even better….

    bands to think about…wintersun, or ensiferum…tool…disturbed…symphony X.

DO NOT mention nevermore…ever, cuz of fredrik switched to opeth. just put opeth in there and dont even say nevermore again. cmon, let’s be logical.

    Dream Theater

    Opeth/Between The buried and me

    Tool/Wintersun

    Disturbed/Symphony X

  18. dtopeth1 says:

    the lineup:

    1. Dream Theater

    2. Opeth

    3. Between The Buried and Me

    4. Tool/Porcupine Tree

  19. Speedemon53 says:

not tool or disturbed…they def. arent progressive rock. im thinkin…

    1. Dream Theater
    2. Protest the Hero
    3. Cynic
    4. Muse

muse is kinda progessive…more so than 3 was but i think they would make a good band

  20. malacoda says:

aw, i thought your dream lineup was the lineup. damn

    1. dream theater
    2. btbam
    3. textures
    4. cynic (although they have another killer tour to go on)

  21. Motoghost says:

PN 08 was a great tour and I can’t wait for 2009. I think my lineup would be

    1. Dream Theater
    2. Porcupine Tree/Blackfield
    3. Nevermore
    4. The Ocean

  22. BetweenThePorcupineAndTree says:

i would keep btbam again, but add PT and TF:

    1. Dream Theater
    2. Between the Buried and Me
    3. Porcupine Tree
    4. Tetrafusion

  23. zEKEwillshredyourfaceoff says:

    I think ….

    Dream Theater

    Children of Bodom

    Lamb of God

    Protest the Hero

    Born of Osris

    Disturbed

  24. Lloydarcher says:

    Dream Theater
    Symphony X
    Opeth
    Nevermore
    Protest The Hero/Pagan’s Mind

I would pay an embarrassing amount of money to see this lign up.

  25. cLarity- says:

Id love to have Cynic on the bill, as well as Nevermore. Cynic’s album Focus was Monumental in the Progressive world. Anyone that denies it is an idiot. They are touring with Meshuggah and The Faceless though, so that could cause some problems. Hell, wouldnt mind seeing The Faceless on the bill either.. Little Tech Death to mix up the night?
Wait.. If Nevermore played.. That would mean.. Jeff Loomis and Petrucci all in one night? That could be disastrous..
Wouldnt mind seeing Opeth or BTBAM back on the tour though :P

  26. jcook says:

I would LOVE to see 3 again. Very awesome. As for the others…… BtBaM would be worth it again.

Although, I would like so see something like….

    Khallice

    Andromeda

    Symphony X

    Dream Theater

Amazing tour last year. Looking forward to this one.

  27. Jarolz says:

    AndromedA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  28. Jergg says:

Disturbed and Muse suck. They arent progressive OR metal.
Btbam / DT / the Faceless / …and so on (as long as they fit the title of the show)

  29. [...] Mike Portnoy announced that there would be a 2009 edition of last year’s bonerrific Progressive Nation Tour — [...]

  30. Anthony says:

Cant wait to see Dream Theater once again, going to be an awesome show.

The line up could definitely use some work maybe …

    Dream Theater

    Symphony X

    Opeth

    Cynic

    Pyramid Theorem

  31. Micah! says:

You all are forgetting earth’s greatest band, Pain of Salvation.
    P.o.S
    Dream Theater
    Tool/ APC
    Opeth
    Porcupine Tree

    there’s a show

  32. Conner says:

I would pay my left testicle to see:
    Dream Theater
    Opeth
    Tool
    Porcupine Tree
and all of them doing King Crimson covers every now and then.

    *Open your Third Eye*

  33. Nik says:

The 08 line up was awsome! All were amazing except BTTBAM they were horrible i wouldent even consider them music they suck.
