The Metallica machine is in full effect, with new headlines, audio/video clips, and band statements seemingly coming out several times every day. Here’s what’s happened since we signed off on Friday, so we can compress all the arguing that will inevitably follow into one, convenient thread:

  • The band released a preview of the video for “The Day That Never Comes.” (watch below)
  • Pro-shot live footage from the Leeds Festival surfaced of “The Day That Never Comes.” (watch after the jump)
  • Fan-filmed footage of the new song “Cyanide” surfaced, also shot at Leeds. (watch after the jump)
  • The band posted two new audio samples from Death Magnetic on their website.

The Day that Never comes sounded better live than recorded, but that may only have been because you couldn’t hear most of James lyrics. I actually really like Cyanide. I think Metallica really couldn’t be relevant anymore if they tried. They’d have to really push the envelope of thrash, and that’s just not going to happen. From the sounds of it, this album should be a fun, if non-essential, semi return to form for them.

Fuck man! The song sounds really good live! I actually get it now that hear it and see it… I like the tune. Again, I’m not expecting Metallica to re-invent thrash (Aaron already posted about this very well), but watching this changed the way I heard the song originally.

It’s intense and builds up well, and doesn’t sound like a whole bunch of riffs thrown in together… The build on the feeling that the first riff gives (yes, even though it sounds like Fade To Black).

    Cool.

You know, I hate on these guys all the time, but TDTNC is kinda growing on me. And “Cyanide” is probably the best thing I’ve heard from them in years. A couple of the snippets on the site are promising, too.

Revolutionary? Hardly. A minor reminder of what made them champs in the first place? Sure. And that’s enough for me. But they probably shoulda released this as the immediate followup to the Black Album instead of totally squandering their legacy and pissing all over the goodwill of their fans.

Lars is hilariously bad, though. Dude gets worse every day.
