WEIGH IN ON THE NEW GN’R SINGLE
Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008 at 10:10am by Axl RosenbergSo my own cynicism be damned, a new Guns N’ Roses single hit radios this morning – the title track from Chinese Democracy, which, it would now appear, just really might be coming out this year. New York City’s own Q104.3 is currently streaming the song, which has gone through changes since the last leaked version we’ve heard, including new drums, guitars, and, oh yeah, vocals. Seriously, you have to think that a Chinese Democrazy box set with all the various incarnations these songs have gone through over the past fifteen years would be kind of fascinating.
ANYWAY, Vince, myself, and the other inhabitants of the MetalSucks Mansion will have lots and lots of time to weigh-in on new GN’R in the coming month, so for now, we just wanna hear what you think. Check out the song and then weigh in below.
Also, if anyone can explain the lyric “It would take a lot more time than you/ I’ve got more masturbation” to me, it’d be much appreciated.
UPDATE: We just got a press release with comments from GN’R manager Andy Gould, so I guess that settles it; the album is really coming out. Also, producing credit will apparently be split between Axl Rose and someone named Caram Costanzo. I looked up Costanzo on All Music, and while he’s done engineering work for everyone from Rage Against the Machine to Lil’ Kim, it looks like this will be his first producing credit.
Also, check out the band’s official site!

i think it sounds like it could be a filler song off of Use Your Illusion II (which is good), but w/ shitty guitar tone and lots of Pro Tool type editing that made it sound not organic at all (i.e. like if you listen to the old albums, sounded like there were 2 guitars playing slightly different rhythm parts and then 1 would split out for the solos. while on this one, it sounds like just one rhythm player throughout w/ some other guy would come in cold w/ random solos in different parts). that’s what i think.
shacklers revenge is horrible. if the rest of the songs have this techno bullshit i will stab myslelf in the eye.
This is my first listen to any of the new GNR. I havent bought into the hype, and I am very glad i didn’t. If this was a new band that had this song as the first single on there first album and it didn’t feature Axl Rose, no one (on Metalsucks) would care about this incredibly generic song. This should be a big hit for local alternative stations.
This is the first time i’ve heard any of the new Guns N Roses, and I have to agree with Johnny. It is terribly generic. I didn’t expect much from the Axl Rose Project, but I at least thought it would be slightly better than this.
First listen to anything from the Chinese Democracy, and it was exactly what I expected, nothing special. I think the best way to sum up this record would be comparing it to a movie that is completed and sits on a shelf and the studio holds onto it and just dumps it close to the holidays praying that some people stumble onto it. Hey, at least, we all get a free Dr Pepper for this shit.
This song is freakin’ awesome!!!! Better than the whole Death Crapnetic album… and it’s just one song!
I like the tune. Is it as good as Welcome to the jungle or rocket queen? No, but in my opinion it is better than the majority of the illusion albums and has some cool guitar parts and the Axl angst that the majority of us love.
Exactly who IS Guns ‘N’ Roses? Does anybody know who is IN the band other than Axl Rose? Let’s call it what it is: Axl Rose Solo Artist
The song: It’s a decent song. That’s about it. Cool guitar solo…whoeverthefuck ended up playing it.
I like it, it has a With Teeth NIN feel to it.
I was expecting to hate it.
Glad to see it’s streaming on a station that’s so “modern”, what with all the Tom Petty, old Journey, Scorpions and Billy Joel at your fingertips.
I agree with Johnny Death – it’s incredibly mediocre. In the past, GNR has always kind of “sounded” like GNR, but aside from Axl’s over-processed vocals, there’s nothing distinguishing about it. If you pulled the vocals from it, it would sound like all of the other faceless corporate rock they spew over current rock radio these days…
the line is
“It would take a lot more time than you have got for masturbation”
Also this song kicks ass
What do these guys have against Canada? It Doesn’t work!!! This is so frustrating, happens to me all the time for all kinds of shit. Are there any other Canadians on here that are having problems streaming? Or is it just me? Maybe my work network is blocking shit… bastards.
Pretty good – I just see it as his solo album. Which it is.
Of course everyone will have the knives out and go overboard because it’s not the moon on a stick
It is my work network!! Those sneaky bastards!
I like it. I like it a lot.
Heard it this morning on Radio 1, it’s awesome.
I think I liked the original more. It’s been awhile since I’ve heard it, but this was definitely my favorite song of the batch that leaked awhile back.
I think it’s pretty good. I like Shackler’s Revenge more though
All in all I’d say Axl and the Roses have a pretty good album ahead
Am I like the only person in this world that really could give a flying fuck about the new album?!?!
GNR died when slash left
I dont mind the song that much, has a few cool parts, but this should be called Axel Rose, not Guns and Roses. Also, it is WAY TOO produced!!!
I find it pretty funny when people say it isn’t guns n’ roses because slash isn’t here anymore, the chinese leaks sound way more gnr than velvet revolver ever did, and buckethead and bumblefoot are way better than slash in every way possible.
slush or no slush, gun and rose were always nauseating. i won’t waste bandwidth listening to this…
Isn’t that pretty much the same riff as LARD’s 70s Rock Must Die? That’s a lot more ironic than anything Alanis Morrisette ever came up with.
sounds better than anything I’ve heard off of Death Magnetic.
Yeah, this is better than anything from Death Magnetic, and this isn’t even the best song.
I liked it. Nothing spectacular. But a solid rock n roll jam nonetheless. Hopefully it’ll inspire more out of the rest of the crap they play on radio these days.
also, i sincerely hope axl has been spending all these years figuring out how the release of this album could prevent an eminent depression and not on how to rewrite “Chinese Democracy” 40 times and wind up with that.
Waaaaaaaaaah, it took too long to make
Waaaaaaaaaah, it’s only Axl
Waaaaaaaaaah, I never accomplished anything creatively in my life so I go to websites to bitch about things I’m not interested in just so it appears I have a voice and a life.
WOW, am I sick of people on the internet. I realize now after 33 years on this planet most people live to bitch and complain. It’s thier hobby. Can you imagine?
The only reason I come to this site is to find news regarding roughly 3 bands.
TOOL, NIN, and Gn’R
I never post a reply about 90% of the TRASH on this site because most of the crap metal today sucks ass which means I don’t care about it.
I don’t understand how much free time losers all over the internet have to post on things that don’t interest them or that they don’t like. So funny.
As for the song, I can’t believe I just heard some kick ass rock music again. It’s been a long time coming. And I hope this is a sign of things to come. Because I’m getting really bored of the crap that’s out there.
Some of the other songs coming from GnR that I’m really impressed with…
there was a time
better
madagascar
IRS
CHINESE DEMOCRACY STARTS NOW!!!
Sounds like Rob Zombie fucked Trent Reznor and aborted the fetus anally into an aluminum lasagna tray in the alley behind a Hot Topic.
Oh, and if the best thing anyone can say about it is, “It’s better than anything on Death Magnetic”… Well, that just speaks volumes in itself.
You have a great career ahead of you as a “rock journalist”,
or perhaps A&R “Douche”….
15 years and this is the best that GNR can come up with? Considering that this is an album I didn’t even think would come out in my lifetime (and I’m only 21), I get I set my standards pretty high. It’s not a horrible song, and it might grow on me a little bit, but it’s just REALLY disappointing.
No offense to the Metalsucks fellas or anything but I am at a loss as to why anybody still thinks Guns N’ Roses (or should I say Axl Rose) is relevant in today’s music scene. A CD 15 years in the making does not interest me at all, but that is just my opinion.
I’m not an Axl apologist and no offence to you but when did his music being relevant have anything to do with anything at all? What does that mean anyway?
The biggest tour of the year is from a band who are probably internet jockey’s greatest definition of the word irrelevant but people enjoy it in their droves and the world continues to turn.
This song in particular isn’t better than any one song on Death Crapnetic, I’m saying that this one song is better than Death Crapnetic as a whole. Meaning that this one song, by Guns n’ Roses (not the Axl rose solo record) is better than all the songs on Death Crapnetic.
The best thing Axl Rose has ever done was contribute backing vocals to Sebastian Bach on the Angel Down album which is an absolutely killer album. This new Axl album is god awful. I agree with RaZZo’s post whole-heartedly.
as i read elsewhere “it took 15 years to create what velvet revolver could do in 10 minutes”…
i don’t think they were being complementary…
This is garbage. Uninspired and terrible – at first I thought all it might need is Slash to breathe some life into it, but I further listenings, I realize it’s hopeless.
Axl should just go back to getting facelifts and hair extensions and stop making music.
[...] Guns N’ Roses finally sent a single to radio and confirmed the release of Chinese Democracy. Enough of you cared enough to tell us you don’t care. [...]
i want my dr. pepper!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
is buckethead on this? sounds like him. if not ron thal is getting alot more modest
So cool!
Oh, it’s real, I know!
