MASTODON CRACK THE SKYE

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008 at 1:25pm by Axl Rosenberg

Mastodon have announced Crack the Skye as the title of their new album. There’s still no release date but the track listing is as follows:

01. Oblivion
02. Divinations
03. Quintessence
04. The Czar
I. Usurper
II. Escape
III. Martyr
IV. Spiral
05. Ghost of Karelia
06. Crack The Skye
07. The Last Baron

I first read about this story on Blabbermouth. Since they quoted our interview with Troy Sanders but didn’t actually link to us, fair is fair.

Kind of an underwhelming title for what one might expect from Mastodon, but if you judged every CD on the merits of its title alone then I guess the joke would be on you. Still, I’m fuckin excited for this album to drop.

  2. key says:

probably represents the air element in the element quadrilogy. Leviathan was the water and Blood Mountain was earth… Remission was the fire one?

  3. Wayne says:

Jesus Hussein Christ, I cannot fucking WAIT for this fucking record!!!!!

  4. @key

Yes, but it’s loosely based on that element.

  5. Zap Branigan says:

    Can’t fucking wait

  6. muzikwhore says:

I seen clip of them doing Divinations and it sounded like crap. I’m sure it’s because of footage. I’m really looking forward to this album!! Brann had become one of my favorite drummers.

  7. dthrasher says:

Crack the Sky not trendy enough?

  8. Dr J says:

I’m so stoked for this album; I need to listen to more Mastodon to get ready for it. I don’t mind much that it’s going to be lighter, since Mastodon has always been an atmospheric, moody band. As long as they keep that they can’t go wrong IMO.

  9. Surely they can never top Leviathan. Also, I’m a little worried that this record won’t be heavy after the comments from Hinds; especially after being disappointed by a change from melodeath to rock by Fear My Thoughts (unrelated band, I know).

  10. Although, I’m sure Mastodon will still put on an excellent show when I see them on Friday. Horns.

  11. JTL says:

I’m not worried, this album will be great like the rest. I am stoked for this, as well as seeing them tomorrow and in December.

  12. Vikingfromhell890 says:

Mastodon always delivers so I can’t wait for this cd.

I’m starting to really hate Blabbermouth… Posting videos that get immediately taken down and all the douchebags who post their stupid bullshit on there, Fuck! Oh and Mastodon is fucking awesome, can’t fucking wait. Fuck yeah.

    Some leaked lyrics. ;O)

Speed bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing,
    Onward, the sailors cry
Carry the lad that’s born to be king
    Over the sea to skye

Loud the winds howl, loud the waves roar,
    Thunder clouds rend the air;
Baffled our foe’s stand on the shore
    Follow they will not dare

    Speed bonnie boat….

Though the waves leap, soft shall ye sleep
    Ocean’s a royal bed
Rocked in the deep, Flora will keep
    Watch by your weary head

    Speed bonnie boat….

Many’s the lad fought on that day
    Well the claymore could wield
When the night came, silently lay
    Dead on Culloden’s field

    Speed bonnie boat…

Burned are our homes, exile and death
    Scatter the loyal men
Yet, e’er the sword cool in the sheath,
    Charlie will come again.

  15. Insomnivore says:

And I should probably say I’m from Skye so am quite pleased about the album title. I doubt they’re making an album about us though but I can hope.

  16. Rob says:

Rolling Stone has an interview where Brent was talking about how this album was going to be mellower and more rock oriented. Which I thought sounded stupid until I remembered that Mastodon rules and one of their best attributes is their riffs, and if they are going to do a mellower, blues-rock oriented record, it’s going to be full of great songs and great riffs, so who gives a fuck? Definetly looking forward to this one.

  17. Isisblack says:

All Hail The Majesty Of Mastodon. That album is going to kill.
