POLL: WHAT’S THE MOST ANTICIPATED “BIG” METAL ALBUM OF EARLY 2009?

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008 at 12:02pm by Vince Neilstein

The results are in from our last poll, in which you voted by a landslide that Guns N’ Roses’ Chinese Democracy was the best new album from a legacy act in 2008. 2009 is right around the corner, and it’s already shaping up to be a pretty big year in metal if for no other reason than the fact that 5 of the original “New Wave of American Heavy Metal” bands are all releasing new records within two months of each other. Which “big”* release are you looking forward to most?

*Yes, we know this is a small sampling of new records slated for ‘09. For the sake of this poll I’m just concerned with the bigger releases.

  1. DeathMetalDave says:

My vote is for Cannibal Corpse…

  2. I, Monarch says:

I’m very interested to hear Mastodon’s new “classic rock” approach. Let’s hope the riffs still kick.

  3. Cullen says:

Whatever Megadeth is planning to release.

  4. Damotello says:

Out of the 5 in the poll I’d go for Mastodon. But I’d really love some new DEP, Converge or Pig Destroyer next year.

  5. the_0ne says:

Damn it, is Anthrax ever going to release a new one??? But I’d have to say I’m looking forward to KSE. And no politics this time. ughhh, who the hell wants to be the metal Green Day???

  6. enragedtoast says:

    wheres the new necrophagist vote?

  7. I, Monarch says:

Damotello, you’ll get your new DEP and Converge. Let’s hope for the Pig Destroyer.

  8. Brutal Jay says:

I’m going with Chimaira. Just because.

  9. d.o.g.o.b.g.y.n. says:

Chimaira, with Lamb Of God at a close second.

  10. Adam Duncan says:

Mastodon’s album is the one that I’m most looking forward to out of that list closely followed by Lamb Of God’s next one. Chimaira’s new record might be fun too. Don’t care about the other two.

I’m also really looking forward to new efforts from DEP, Megadeth, Converge, Slayer, Heaven & Hell, Alice In Chains, Cannibal Corpse, High On Fire, Morbid Angel and Dream Theater.

  11. Phoenixdan says:

If I could, I would vote for all five, because I will be buying all five when they are released.

  12. Jesse says:

    @d.o.g.o.b.g.y.n.

I’m with you man. Only I’m looking more forward to Lamb of God than anything. Chimaira is bound to melt some faces with their new shit though. They’re the kind of band that shoots to turn heads and they always do.

  13. RayRay says:

Chimaira all the way. You know LOG will sound like LOG. What will Chimaira pull out of the bag? You know it will rule just because every album they have made has been great ( Aside from Pass out of Existence) which still had a couple decent tracks. Mastodon sucks donkey balls. Merry Christmas fuckers!

  14. mynamesucks says:

All of them but if i had to pick one it would KSE.

  15. Rohit says:

    My vote goes for Atheist

  16. I agree with Dave-CannibalCorpse
but next to that, definitely GodForbid’s EarthsBlood!

    Seeing them in January!!!

  17. The Mighty Fucking Quinn says:

Wow.Only like 10 votes for Earthsblood.I find that if I get too excited for the new LOG, I’ll just disappoint myself. And the new KSE is really good.I’ve heard it.They got this song that has a sweet melody in the chorus, it’s called Rose of Sharyn. And this other song A Bid Farewell is pretty good. What? Those are all off The End of Heartache? It’s ok, they were on As Daylight Dies, and I’m sure they’ll be on the new album too.

    PS – Necrophagist(sweet) and Ephel Duath!Score.

Oh, and a side note.I’ve have the new Napalm Death for almost a month and have not heard it yet.I’ve had a near ruptured ear drum the last 9 or 10 days, but for before then, who wants to hit me?

  18. Houston C says:

I couldn’t care less about any of those releases. My vote goes to Atheist’s new album or hopefully Wintersun will finally finish Time.

  19. Elpants says:

    Darkest Hour
    Insomnium
    Necrophagist
    > All listed.

KSE and God Forbids albums sound like they are on repeat through the entire album. Never been much of a fan of Chimaira even though I have seen them twice. Lamb of God is cool, but I worry its going to disapoint.

I did vote for Mastodon to hear the classic rock sound.

  20. Kit Brandner says:

I hope Cephalic Carnage has something in their bong for the new year…

  21. cink says:

Looking forward to all these releases but KsE takes the cake. LoG always sound the same. Mastodon is gonna be fucking interesting aswell so 2nd spot goes to em.

  22. The Greys says:

Out of that list, I’m most interested in the new Mastodon and God Forbid albums … but what I’d like to hear most in 2009 is a new album by Wolves in the Throne Room.

Yeah, yeah, I know: All the hipsters claim to love WIITR. Personally, I think hipsters only claim to like Wolves because they’re trying to out “indie” their friends. There’s no way a bunch of non-metalheads are really Wolves fans: That music is too raw and abrasive to have any “crossover” appeal.

I’ll get off my soapbox now.

  23. alex c says:

my vote goes for psyopus! odd senses!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111

  24. jonowev says:

No Kreator, Sepultura or Napalm Death in the poll?!

Out of those I went for Mastodon.

  25. Tim says:

I’m with Rohit on this… Atheist, as well as new Pestilence for the new year. I am looking forward to Necrophagist and hopefully some Cephalic Carnage also.

  26. douchenozzle says:

Ok Mastadon, Chimaira, and Lamb of God will be huge records. No duh. How about -16-’s relapse debut? One song they posted rules. -16- is Better than 90% of the mastabatory tech crap that will surely be flooding the metal media. obviously I love that band . High on Fire are supposed to have a new record too. They don’t dissapoint. Let’s hear it for bands that write real songs and not just string parts together because it’s “difficult”. What a bunch of Jocks. Go back to baseball and leave metal to the real outcasts. If I hear “brutal” one more time in a press release I’ll vomit as well. Oh yeah no more of these predictable chorus’ from Killswitch. Shit sounds like a formula. Oh hear comes that “sellout chorus crap”.

  27. Mike says:

The obvious answer is the new Heaven and Hell. These fools listed hear will bow down to the might of the Tony Iommi riff

  28. cink says:

    @douchenozzle

Funny that you think clean singing is “sellout crap”. Ok, I understand the fact about the verse, clean sung chorus, verse, clean sung chorus again formula that can be pretty gay but if you actually listened to their latest record, the formula isn’t that way except for a couple of tracks.

  29. Mike says:

Skyfire – Escoteric. These guys have always put COB to shame.

  30. Another Opinion says:

    douchenozzle! (um…)

masturbatory is a term used by assholes that play ironman fifty times in a row to dismiss anything beyond their understanding. it figures that in a genre filled with sides of “those who get it” “those who don’t” and “but like really, we get it” or “no, like really, you don’t” there are founts of jealousy and anger reaching the surface of these metal blogs. i don’t know anything about killswitch engage. i just listened to one of their songs on imeem. whatever, but i don’t dismiss it, and i don’t attack it. i stick to what i know and don’t let my fears and prejudices sway my tastes. i’m really glad there are many artists who don’t share your opinion. prog will always triumph, invest in prog and thou shalt find reward.

  31. Another Opinion says:

oh yeah: ISIS is recording right now so I’m assuming they’ll also have an ‘09 release. that’s my pick.

  32. Anthony says:

    Chimaira

  33. Shit Disturber says:

    I’m with douchenozzle

    BRING BACK THE FUCKING GROOVE

  34. experience_martin says:

Easily, the most important album of 2009 will be Armored Saint’s new one if they actually follow through with the announcement that they are recording and releasing a new CD sometime in the new year. The other is Kreator’s latest, which thankfully arrives in a few weeks.

  35. RayRay says:

Kreators new track has been on repeat I feel like on XM’s metal station. Though I know nothing about their earlier shit…”Hordes of Chaos” sounds awesome and will def be picking it up Jan 16.

  36. Mark says:

Oh, come off it, Vince, you know you have no idea what metal is. Admit it.

  37. godforbidrulz says:

LOG is so unbelievably overrated I can’t stand it… God Forbid blows them away it’s not even close. Sacrament completely blew dogs and Ashes of the Wake wasn’t that much better. They peaked with As the Palaces Burn and will never come close to that again.

  38. douchenozzle says:

Ok just my opinion. Sorry to be angry on a metal blog. If you haven’t noticed most metal fans are angry. That’s why we’re drawn to it. Fact is 09 is going to rule for metal. A lot of vital bands will bring some great music and a lot contrived soulless crap will come out too. Don’t get me wrong kse brings the riffs and the melody but sometimes the chorus lacks all the energy of the rest of the song. I’ll still pay for the ticket to show. Shit I’m going to a bunch of shows this coming year. So I’ll stop writing this bullshit and surf on over to ticketmaster and really get fucked with.

  39. d-rave says:

I’d have to say that for 2009 what I’m anticapted for is another between the buried and me album, they hit the studio in feb! can’t fucking wait.

  40. AnusApache says:

Mastodon with Chimaira as a CLOSE second. It was previously said that LOG will sound like LOG and that is true, I hope its another solid release. Im interested in what the God Forbid will be like since vince and axl are all up on those guys dicks…they must be good. I really dont give two shits what KSE has to pull out…its gonna sound the same as all of there other boring ass cds

  41. Self-Titled says:

Dude wow. Thats the most brutal poll ever. These bands are all the shit. Im pretty pissed off i was forced to choose. Chimaira, LOG, and Mastodon are all bands id have babies with.

  42. Old Skool Metal says:

There are a lot of pending releases in 09. but the poll said which of the following NWOAHM bands. Of the bands listed Mastodon is the only one worth mentining IMO. The rest of them are all emo “core” bands. I poop on them, Mastodon OWNS!!

  43. Ted says:

    @Elphant

    Agreed. New insomnium would destroy

  44. cink says:

Old Skool Metal is a fucking idiot. Ban him please

  45. Miroslav says:

From these 5, Mastodon for sure.

    Suffocation – Blood Oath!

  46. alex c says:

psyopus!!!!!!! odd senses is coming out in feb! check that shit out!!!!
their new singer kicks arseeeeeeeeeeee ahhaha

  47. Joe says:

I’m with the guy who said Atheist. That will be a much better ending to their career than Elements, which wasn’t terrible (except for some of the rapping) and the fact that it was the follow up to Unquestionable Presence.

  48. JOSHDAVE says:

LOG should go out with Mastadon on a tour . That line up would destroy worlds.

  49. Old Skool Metal says:

    @cink.

I should be banned for my opinion being different than yours? If you read what I wrote, I said IMO=In MY opinion. What are you a republican? No one is allowed to have a different opinion than you? are your sisters pants getting too tight and affecting the blood flow to your brain? or have all the hair products from making your hair look like the jonas brothers eating at your skull? In MY opinion MASTODON is the ONLY good metal band to come out in the last 10 years or so. The rest are all shit. so blow me.

  50. Hulk says:

    @Old Skool Metal

cink was talking about you calling them emo “core” bands. That has nothing to do with an opinion. It’s a FACT that chimaira isn’t a core band. God Forbid isn’t “emo”, they talk about politics, and so has kse lately. So don’t be a DUMBASS and get OPINION mixed up with FACT.

WHere the fuck is the new Arsis? blah

I guess I’m going for God Forbid. IMO, mastadon sucks Mccain’s jerriatric balls.

  51. Old Skool Metal says:

It’s a fact that chimaira sucks balls no matter what they do and I can call them emo if I damn want. I had the misfortune of watching this band live and they sound like everybody else. god forbid is a hardcore band I don’t care what the hell they’re talking about if all they do is the same “brootal breakdowns” that they all do. Of all the bands listed Mastodon is original. The rest are all copying each other. killbitch engayed is the worst piece of crap i’ve heard since slipknot. Breakdowns are not metal, they’re hardcore and an easy way for a band with no musical talent to sound heavy.

  52. Tyler says:

How are Cannibal Corpse and Slayer not one of the “the bigger releases” yet Chimaira and Killswitch Engage are? I voted for Lamb of God cause that one song you guys posted was completly br0000t4l!

  53. Hulk says:

    @Old Skool Metal

God Forbid doesn’t do “broootal breakdowns.” They focus more on riffage dumbass. And since when does being original have anything to do with sucking ass? ‘Cause mastadon sure does.

I don’t give a shit about any of these bands. I picked God Forbid because the guitars are okay every once in a while. I hate Kse (used to like ‘em a while back) and loathe chimaira, but that DOESN’T mean I’m gonna bad-mouth them without knowing what I’m talking about. I’m a Technical Death Metal kid. I also listen to GOOD deathcore (more tech-/melodic-based). And who gives a shit if breakdowns originated from hardcore? That’s why it’s called metalCORE and deathCORE and grindCORE. If you don’t like it, then shut your ass. Breakdowns aren’t a way just to sound heavy, they’re badass for people who like fights. I hate scene kids who fucking fling their arms around like retards. Breakdowns are to beat the fuck out of someone. Idk about metalcore, but some deathcore is fast, aggressive music. So someone with a BRAIN thought that it would be a good idea to put fast, aggressive music with a slow, fight-commencing ‘breakdown.’ so if it goes with the song, who gives a shit?

Like I said, where’s the new Arsis? or Necrophagist?

  54. Reaper-X says:

Lamb of God and Mastodon are going to make the most interesting releases.

KSE is going to do the same album over again. It will be End of Heartache 3.0 with more bullshit “mixing” on Adam D’s part.

Chimaira gets worse and worse every album. They should just stop…or learn to play something less lame.

  55. nixon says:

you are forgetting napalm death, atheist, and suffocation

  56. dear hulk,
mastodon is not spelled mastadon. instead of just looking tasteless, you make yourself look like a tasteless idiot.

LoG is pretty much pantera part deux. KsE may be the best of those metalcore breakdown melodic chorus bands, but the style has been dried up for a good time now. they’ll have to take some chances to excite me. that said, as my initial statement would suggest, my vote goes to mastodon.

    suck it.

  57. Hulk says:

    dear michael moore,

picking at errors such as the spelling of “MASTODON” is trivial and means nothing, especially considering the fact that I don’t give a flying fuck about the band. It also doesn’t help calling me tasteless, considering the term is subjective. As I recall, mispelling the name of a band you neither give a shit about, nor ever will, doesn’t make someone an idiot, especially when the insult comes from someone who listens to such a shitty band anyway.

But you’re right. I second your KsE comment. They were dried up a while ago, or the style in general.

Beneath The Massacre anyone? The Faceless just came out with a new CD, but I want more already.

  58. SYL Townsend says:

I’l buy all those albums. Looking foward for more LOG. But for me, im anticipating for more Devin Townsend stuff, 2 simultanious albums commin out and an EP

  59. Logfan says:

    Lamb of god! Easy CHoise!

  60. CJ says:

Killswitch Engage get my vote. Lamb Of God and God Forbid are a close second and third, but I think Killswitch is gonna keep me more interested.

  61. Benny says:

    LAMB OF GOD!!

    seriously, there is no competition

  62. dthrasher says:

    WINTERSUN – TIME!!!!

  63. LAMB OF GOD, i’ve heard it, it’s their most aggressive yet, with killer riffs

  64. maafyck says:

well considering im seeing a bunch of those bands live LOG seems 1 but chimaira is an all time favourite.

  65. devouredbymetal says:

hey obvious from the choice its log…seriously like chimaira but gets monotonous most of the time…most awaited – necrophagist ….\m/suicmez\m/….wish decapitated would release an album…rip \m/ vitek \m/….

  66. Same, the Jonas brothers can make any song a decent song .

  67. Jeff N says:

without a doubt i am waiting for the new Between the Buried and Me, above all, those guys are just musical geniuses, as are so many of the others

  68. jason says:

this was a tough one, Lamb of god and mastodon are both one of my favourite bands, but I’m going for Mastodon.

  69. The only opinion that matters says:

    Between the buried and me
    The Black Dahlia Murder
    Necrophagist
    Morbid Angel
    Municipal Waste
    Suffocation

what the fuck are you guys thinking?

  70. hs says:

of couse it shld be killswitch engage! They fucking rule!

  71. viking says:

The bands listed in the poll are hardly metal. Only commercial mtv crap without any good melodies or creativity.
God for 14 years old emo boys and girls warming up to the metal scene, not for metalheads.

Wintersun – Time will be the best album of the year if it is ever released.

Comparing those american bands to such music is like comparing rap to baroque music. Doesnt compute.

  72. James says:

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Lamb of God or Chimaira on Mtv :S

New KsE album is ok, new LoG is fucking great, and new Chimaira blows donkeys for quarters. Seriously.

Not heard the new Mastodon, but I’ve heard good things. And lol. God Forbid. Gtf.

For anycunt who thinks to accuse of LoG having no skill or creativity, you’re clearly a dried up foetus with blown eardrums, either from the endless droning blastbeats from your “true metal bands” or from the endlessly boring viking metal vaginal discharge you choose over talented bands.

It’s not about “being brootal”, it’s about skill, technique and passion. Any stupid motherfucker can beat the shit outta drums or scream down a mic til he’s blue in the fucking face. The difference is the talented bands will still be doing it in 10 years time.
