MASTODON’S “DIVINATIONS” – THE BEST METAL VIDEO OF 2009 SO FAR

Friday, March 6th, 2009 at 11:00am by Axl Rosenberg

Headbanger’s Blog has just debuted the new Mastodon video, “Divinations,” and I gotta say, it’s pretty friggin’ cool. It’s directed by Roboshobo, who apparently also gave us Mastodon’s equally awesome video for “Sleeping Giant,” and the cool but rhythmically challenged video for Metallica’s “All Nightmare Long.” Check it out:

Mastodon’s incredibly cool prog masterpiece, Crack the Skye, will be out March 24. I can’t tell you how stoked I am to hear them play it live, in its entirety, on their upcoming tour.

  4. ceth says:

Why is this band so good!!!!! And damn, could that character Brent is playing be any more fitting to his actual look? And i gotta say the new Fu Manchu/Biker Stache look bill is sporting these days is quite bad ass!

Hands down this album will be in my top 5 of this year and I’m sure it’ll have a nice spot in my top 40 of the decade list.

This is everything great Rock/Metal should be.

  20. Balls666 says:

Cool video I guess. Its a shame Mastodon haven’t been able to touch Remission since its release. Prog is short for “progressive” right? Can anyone actually tell me WHY this is a prog band, or is it just a stupid fucking label you dipshit metal snobs put on them to make yourselves sound cool for having a boner for the same shit every year?

  21. ferocious_fetus says:

the video is well made, the music itself is good…but as stated before. Brent REALLY needs to stop singing so much. I can handle his voice in small doses, anything more than that and i want to cringe. Whats up with Troy’s semi-singing too? Small gripes I guess, still gonna buy this anyways.

  22. You suck says:

    This video SUCKS.

  23. fightingmike says:

This video rules!!!! The song is growing on me. Not nearly as heavy as their past songs, but still an excellent song by an awesome band. I do hope that they have more heavy stuff on the new record though. I’m hoping it will be great!

  24. DannE says:

Greatest fucking metal video I have seen in a long time… where’s my bong?

  25. Conduit says:

You guys are hearing the same singers right? Too bludgeoned by horrendous singing in modern metal to know when it’s done right (and actually sung.) I had no idea Troy was the one who sang the chorus

  26. ceth says:

“I had no idea Troy was the one who sang the chorus”

Yeah, that is definitely different from his normal thing….I was impressed to see Brann bassicly doing some lead vocals on one song at Scion Rock Fest. Not often you see a band where every member of the band could front another band on their own.

  27. Self-Titled says:

oh my fuck, i just laughed my ass off and heard some seriously sick new mastodon at the same time. I love you Mastodon. The fuckin caveman solo made me cream.

  28. chrismix says:

That was sick, I can’t wait till I get the new cd in the mail, and go see them on April 19th!

  29. You Don't Know Me says:

    music videos still exist?

  30. teababe27 says:

    Very cool.

  31. czak says:

Well, the story might be cool and metal, but the video is so badly shot it hurts my eyes to watch it.

  32. MetalRod says:

    who is “mastadon”?

  33. billybob says:

It’d be nice if we could actually view this in Canada. Thanks for the tease Mastodon :P

  34. I like this band I think they are getting better every album but I dont get why they have terrible videos. You know they have a good budget but they dont spend the money wisely. Like some other people have said already….. Good song, crappy video.
For a band who is borderline becoming main stream they should hire better Video producers. The video is obviously HD and looks great but the Idea is just Silly and generic. IMO

  35. PJ says:

Where are the time changes? The weird song structures? They’re all gone. I’ve heard two songs from the new album and they’re both standard verse-chorus. They’ve turned into an atypical “prog” band, i.e. a band that claims to be progressive and sounds progressive on a superficial level, but doesn’t actually write complex music.

I think the band has lost it. Shame, as they are one of the few contemporary bands I follow, because of their original sound. Now, they don’t sound so original. They sound like every other prog-metal band out there.

  36. I love these guys! Not only do they totally ROCK, but they have a sense of humor and don’t take themselves too seriously. I mean come on, Sasquatch and a guitar solo-ing Ice Caveman?!

    How cool is that???

    Very.

  37. Andrew says:

Hilarious video…brilliant song….I love them…I can’t wait for this album to come out!

  38. GoatRider says:

    hahahaha. excellent.

  39. ceth says:

“I think the band has lost it. Shame, as they are one of the few contemporary bands I follow, because of their original sound. Now, they don’t sound so original. They sound like every other prog-metal band out there.”

What other prog metal bands do they sound like….I listen to them almost everyday and just saw them live a week ago and i cant think of who all these bands are that they sound like. A lot of bands are already kind of following into what Mastodon is doing but i cant think of any band that Mastodon sounds like they are copying.
I am starting to hear this argument more and more, I guess Mastodon is getting to that point where all the people that used to like them are bowing out as fans because they arent the only ones that know about them anymore.

  40. Johnny says:

    Good song, funny video.

  41. Samantha says:

It’s awesome! The song is kickass, extremely Mastodonian. The video concept is awesome, but it’s Mastodon, and they’re just silly bastards. I love how they go back to their caveman roots. Brent Hinds makes the perfect caveman.

  42. ALe says:

There song “oblivion” is the very definition of progressive metal. It’s that slow grunge sound.. probably not explaining this right. it is like a fusion genre; a mixture of progressive rock and heavy metal. Progressive metal blends the powerful, guitar-driven sound of metal with the complex compositional structures, odd time signatures, and intricate instrumental playing of progressive rock. Most progressive metal bands are also influenced by jazz fusion and classical music. The songs are usually much longer than standard metal songs, and they are often thematically linked in concept albums. As a result, progressive metal is rarely heard on mainstream radio and video programs.

when I think progressive artists I think of Porcupine Tree, Opeth, Mastodon, Pink Floyd, Rush, etc..

  43. charles says:

Mastodon is clearly trying to reach out to the mainstream music audience with their new album. As stated by others Mastodon is softening their sound/image to appeal to more listeners that would not be interested in their heavier songs. I don’t mind groups experimenting but this album is more than that. Brendan O’Brien is their producer, need I say more. Can’t wait for Mastodon T-shirts at Hot Topic.

  44. tyshunn says:

congratulations, you just proved why everyone hates hipsters.
