MATT HEAFY WANTS YOU TO STEAL TRIVIUM’S MUSIC
Thursday, April 23rd, 2009 at 5:25pm by Vince Neilstein
Trivium’s Matt Heafy loves Twitter, and he wants you to use it to illegally spread the band’s music! Mr. Heafy (@matthewkheafy) is actually quite the Twitterer (Tweeter? Twatter?), and he’s been updating his Twitter account like the dickens with everything from his man-crush on Adam Lambert to his frustration with Facebook. Heafy’s latest messages to Twitter-nation, posted yesterday, attempt to harness the viral nature of the Interwebs to illegally spread Trivium music. Ruh-roh!
Not even the 140-character limit can stop this guy. Here’s his series of six tweets, shown with the first one at the top for the sake of continuity. Imagine Heafy’s So-Flo “duuude” drawl as you read these in your head:
everyone! killer idea. Paolo came up with it/ I endorse it! spread this word to all trivium fans… burn a cd with the best 10 trivium…
… songs. make tons of copies, pass it to everyone. let’s recreate the tape trade virally and all that shit. a perfect 10 tracks…
… name it trivium. pass it to people. maybe work and school friends first, then maybe locally? I think this could spread the gospel better
so with that idea. put it on your twitters, your myspaces, facebools, message boards, everything. spread that word to spread the triv.
write on each cdr to copy, rip, burn, repeat. pay it forward. encourage that shit. I think it could be amazing. thanks so much guys.
annndd. get all your twitter friends to follow me, and I’ll them, and you do the same for all of them. weneed to all have constant infotrade
I actually think it’s a pretty cool idea; there’s nothing like something being free to help get music into the hands of the people. That is, unless you work in the sales department at Roadrunner Records, in which case you’re probably shitting a brick right about now. And thus ends Heafy’s candor through Twitter — sorry, bro, hate to ruin’ it for ya.

i saw these guys at the ozzfest second stage in 05 right when their second cd was hitting the shelves. i was really fuckin impressed. that was until he started mimicking james hetfield in all his songs. you fail matt heafy.
@metalsucks thanks! i’m glad ya dig… you should make a DLable playlisto too on your site if ya wanna. I <3 your site by the way.
from matt heafy´s twitter
I liked being in this band when we all had short hair. What happened?
lol paolo.. its teagan here lool… (the chick on twitter talking bout aus)
Lol u guys are better wif LONG hair, it looks way better ;D <3
OMG LIEK I NO RITE?!?!?!
According to Oscar Wilde, the Irish playwright, poet, AND, author, “Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit.” LEARNING IS FUN! Thanks wikipedia!
I have spent most of my life studying Oscar Wilde and will probably spend the rest of it doing so…and I can assure you that is one of the most quoted out of context Wilde quotes…Wilde is actually being ironic when he makes that statement. However, the Wildean paradoxical epigram baffles most as to what Wilde actually meant (or if he meant anything more than the words he said since for him the subject is constituted in language). Add to that the fact that Wilde did not believe in a single true interpretation, only a series of (mis)interpretations, and you can construe whatever meaning you would like from the statement. However, be aware that that quote (along with the majority of Wildean quotes) is taken out of context.
According to me you’re a faggot.
Also, unnecessary, commas, ARE, cool, right?
Dude Paolo your band is fuckin kickass!
Im seeing you at the mayhem festival at the white river ampetheater,
I cant wait, just to put it out there, you guys should play Shogun,
its my favorite song.
Ohh, and I am not letting Matt take all the glory for this hahah, add me @TriviumPaolo – lovers and haters welcome!
Paolo,
Your one of the best new bass players in metal. Definately have inspired my playing. Keep it up and come back to portland, OR on tour as headliners!
Dude,
Shogun (the album and the song) is probobally the best album of 2008.
everyone DO IT!
i dont necessarily think everyone shuld keep on commenting matt on twitter lik they are about it
but just do it, i sure am
I love Trivium but, this idea is far from original hahaha.
trivium blows dick. you should open for maiden again and get some more bottles of piss thrown at you.
I would drink a bottle of piss to see Maiden for freee!
I don’t like your band….but well played dude. Well played
Thank you sir.
Iron Maiden are a unch of Gayboys.
So are Trivium.
Paulo.. get Double Dragon to open for you in Australia
http://www.myspace.com/doubledragonheavymetal
fuck all you haters….shogun was one of the best releases last year.
if by shogun you somehow mean Chinese Democracy…then yes it was one of the best releases last year.
If you enjoyed Chinese Democracy more than Shogun, you are a fucking idiot.
Stupid closed minded inane spick
Ken M, you’ve got to be fucking joking. If I see Axl Rose in real life, I will punch that little bitch in the fucking face and cum in his braids.
Trivium FTW! If you guys come back and read this, please make Ascendancy Part 2.
kthxbai fags (and by fags, I mean everyone on this site and it’s comments)
you just said kthxbai, and then called other people fags.
I think shogun was a top 10 last year. Thank god they ditched the metallica-isms.
Gutsy move. Not a revolutionary (or new) idea, but it’s ballsy for him to push that in the times we’re in.
And it’s absolutely true: Discs have replaced tapes as the media of choice, but that’s still primarily how my friends and I turn each other onto previously uncharted territory.
Oh, and Matt: I already have. And screw Twitter.
Love and Rockets,
Amanda
Makes sense seeing how they’re is no reason to actually spend money on ‘the triv’.
Also, is it cool to tell all my friends that Matt Heafy and I are boys because I follow his twitter?
Haha now who’s the fag?
Ill steal your music matt, but only physically because I wouldn’t want my worst enemies listening to your shit
We are the fire?!?! Seriously?!? I liked you guys better when you were some lame 80’s band that came to saturate the radio waves post-motely crue.
HAHAHAHAHHA!!!!!
matt heafy is the biggest FUCKING poser in the world. remember when Ascendancy or however you spell it came out and he had short ass hair and looked like an asian kid with down syndrome. fast forward and hes all sleeved out trying to pull off the bad ass look. No thank you. go back to playing your les paul and quit making shitty music with dimes guitars.
not to argue with such a retarded statement, but matt had long hair long before ascendancy….look into the death metal band he was in, Capharnaum.
You sure know a lot about him and our band hahah.
“your old tour manager’s my bro.”
That reply was for my gurl Ken up there. Who is your bro?
it’s cool. you might not remember him, as it was years ago when you guys did a tour with machine head, chimaira, & 3 inches of blood….can’t wait to see you guys tear shit up at mayhem in august.
I beleive that he allready left dean guitars….
So your a little late bro.
Trivium is really good live.
Their songs are decent tho..
what the FUCK is going on here?
the comments for this post make me feel like a 12 year old girl again.
anyway, I think we can all agree that older trivium is better. or at the very least, more original.
that’s hot.
They couldn’t pay me to steal their music….
I don’t take kindly to your use of ellipses.
im sorry i dont take kindly to you being fat and playing recycled thrash riffs.
HAHAH Fat? I weigh 138 pounds Sally. At least we are “green” with our thrash riffs!
even if Paolo was fat, and he isn’t. He is still way more awesome than youa re.
Ya know, you’re mature, couldn’t think of anything better than to call him fat? You are quite the witty fellow
Trivium’s not bad… they’ve got talent, if not originality.
Wow, there are a lot of internet tough guys here. “_________ blows. They are for posers. I hope somebody ______________ them.” Trivium are not actually bad at all. I really actually dig some of shogun. The other three aren’t that good, but I feel that they are starting to find their own sound, and they have some really good guitarists. Only thing I might suggest is a vocalist. Matt and Corey are good guitar players, but not very good vocalists, singing or screaming. Other than that, really good band.
It’s good this is catching on.
After MS linked that whole Bob Lefsetz/Gene Simmons square-off I started subscribing to his (Lefsetz) blog. A lot of this is starting to gain momentum in the music industry as the big record companies spiral further into oblivion.
Amanda Palmer and Trent Reznor are the ones I’ve read the most on lately. Reznor has gone without a label for a while now, and Palmer is trying to get dropped by Roadrunner, if she hasn’t already. It’s all about a direct connection with the fans now, via twitter, myspace, the “tape trading” game that Trivium is trying to start again. Word of mouth, getting people excited for the music again.
I’m curious to see how things will evolve in the next year or two.
This thread gives Trivium a good name.
This shit is so classy. Paolo is fucking great. Fuck yea, Paolo! Kick some ass in their face.
Not being a smartass, btw. Haha.
Paolo is great, he is fuckin hilarious…..he’s a little smart ass….ha ha awesome :)
hahaha, good post. good job. and Paolo, you’re pretty hilarious.
“Mr. Heafy (@matthewkheafy) is actually quite the Twitterer (Tweeter? Twatter?)” You can just call him twat
Do you kiss your dad with that mouth?
BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Hahahaha that’s fuckin great Paolo
I got Shogun after winning a contest on Metalsucks for the unreadable band logo. I listened to it. Tried to be open minded…but the shit was BORING.
Matts lyrics lack depth. The riffing, while showing extreme capability and training, doesn’t really give me a reason to want to spread the ‘gospel of trivium’ anywhere.
I’m not a hater at this point…but boring is boring. Asendancy was boring metalcore. The Crusade was boring wannabe-thrash with cheap, shallow lyrics and Shogun was boring wannabe-thrash with shadow wannabe-evil/dark lyrics. Sorry Matt, but the lyrics in were just too goddamn obvious. I’m not saying go super cryptic and code-like, but at LEAST create some depth and make a listener want to know what you’re singing about. You’re just puking it all out there like all of your fans are idiots. I mean, unless that’s the message you’re trying to convey. In that case, that’s fucking mean. :P Kinda funny, but mean.
The vocals also sound fairly weak. Singing AND screaming. Yes, He can hit high notes, but there isn’t a fullness to your sound. No sense of power in his voice.
Until I hear a Trivium album that A: Sounds like actual Thrash/Heavy metal with depth in their compositions. B: Doesn’t have lyrics reminiscent of middle school poetry scribbles. and C ALSO manages to beef up production. I’ll be pretty much convinced that this has just been one long marketing foul created by the outdated hype machine.
^^^^ At least someone is articulated with their criticism. I commend you, although I don’t agree.
thats fair nuff, but i think the lyrics have far mroe depth on shogun, the whole idea fo using myths n ledgends as metaphors isn’t original true and if u quickly gogole the song title u can grasp teh meaning fairly quick
but its way better than ‘we are the fire/resound the anthem’
and that is an undisputeable fact
All I can say is, never ever underestimate the power of Internet, haha.
Good idea btw.
copy, rip, burn, repeat. — Audio quality wise…that is a recipie for disaster!
If you are burning mp3’s and then re-ripping them, you will be committing the mortal sin of transcoding.
Transcodes are horrible to listen to because they introduce all these weird artifacts into the music and ruin the song! The music will sound like shit! (inb4 some lame comment about how trivium’s music is already shit)
http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=Transcoding
FUCK ALL THE TRIVIUM HATERS! so theyre lyrics arent super cryptic and theyre not the heaviest band. at least theyre not shitty deatchore. Matt heafy is an amazing singer. his scream is unique and fuck you if you dont agree. go ahead and find someone who sounds like matt heafy when he screams. go ahead and find someone who sounds like matt heafy when he sings. They have theyre own sound now. sure you might find riffs that sound similar to other bands, but theyre sound is their own. that 7string sound on songs like becoming the dragon, torn between scylla and charybdis, throes of peridition, etc. notice the breakdown and the heavy fast sections have that trademark trivium sound with 7 string guitars? listen to those songs again and others and you’ll notice the 7 string sound that im talking about. maybe paolo or matt should explain it better?
The perfect advertisement for their next cd; “At least they’re not shitty deathcore.”
Ladies and gents… I present the 13 year old suburban brainwashed follower.
Watch as he proceeds to not know what he’s talking about.
Also, “Becoming The Dragon” was a blatant rip off of “For Whom The Bell Tolls”.
How can you compare those two songs at all? Have you listened, and I mean actually LISTENED? There is NO comparison to those two.
Apparently you’re one who’s easily fooled by minor changes.
It just sounds like a sped up version of “For Whom The Bell Tolls” with more solos and a really fast part added in the middle to make you think its that much more different from the song they ripped it from.
I will admit the bass solo at the end is rather “cliff burton esque’ but, for one, i know how to play both songs on guitar(solos and all) and they dont sound alike at all. And another thing, the part in the middle is not super fast, and it reminds me more of Reign in Blood than anything else. Overall the song sounds like a TRIVIUM song.
Nipples… i think i have made a valid point, that is all.
PS i’d do Trivium, sexy bunch.
This entire ‘conversation’ is a mess.
I had to double check to make sure this wasn’t blabbermouth I was reading.
Trivium are fucking awesome. All their albums are solid. I think people focus too much on the vocals. If you listen to the actual music they play, you will see where I’m coming from.
Well let me give my two cents opinion also. The first album I heard from Trivium was the Ascendancy album and I was pretty much hooked. The wrote very good songs with powerful riffs and melodies, nice brutal vocals that added to the songs and demanded repeated listenings. True they kind of followed a trend, that of metalcore combined with Swedish melodic death metal, but damn it was good music. Unfortunately in their attempt to differentiate themselves they ended up sounding in The Crusade like a combination of Metallica and Dokken. I mean the riffing and the songs showed that they put a lot of effort, but dudes if we want to listen to these bands we’ll just listen to the originals. And I really don’t understand why Matt had to try to be Hetfield (even if that was not his intent that is how he ended up sounding). So for me instead of one step forward they went several steps back (even image wise were they suddenly seemed to come out of the 80’s). And Shogun while trying to get the best of both albums didn’t quite do the distance.
So for me these guys have talent and they can write good songs. And I don’t care much about image and lyrics (if so I wouldn’t be able to stand a lot of bands I like) if the music is good. Just when they make a new album I hope they let their influences only inspire them and not take over.
Also good move with the CD-trading bit. My view on mp3’s and downloading has always been that if you like what you hear you will buy the CD to support the band (at least when you have the cash). If they sell it directly, even better.
oh god how did this get here i am not good with computer
Fuck! I paid for the ltd edition of Shogun.
No, but seriously, that’s pretty cool idea.
I like Trivium. Ascendancy is EPIC and I prefer that sound over The Crusade and Shogun. That said, goddamn there are some people seriously on Paolo’s nuts in here.
It is commendable for Matt (the metal Rob Schneider) to publicly encourage people to rip their music. It’s good to see that there are successful bands that are still more concerned with spreading their music than making money. Like was stated, it’s not an original idea, but it still adds a touch of “remembering where we came from” to Trivium. Kudos.
Matt Heafy is a derp
derp-a-derp-a-doodely-dee
Actually this is a great way to promote any band. I burned my buddy my favorite Trivium songs on a disc and now it’s one of his favorite bands. I think that overall doing things like this is in the bands best interest. You may sell less albums, but I think it is made up in ticket sales and merch. I know plently of bands that who’s albums were burned for free for me and I go out and by tickets to their shows and promote the hell out of them to everyone I know.
Guys guys guys. Yes Trivium make awesome music and are a great band, but could you please stop all the brown nosing?
One last note to all people bashing The Crusade: The songs on that album sound 100 times better live. When I saw them in April 2007 (unfortunately when Matt actually thought he could make his past songs work without screaming), they opened up with Entrance Of The Conflagration and I thought I was going to get crushed to death (I weigh 112lbs) with how crazy the crowd got. It was nothing compared to Gojira, Sanctity, and Annihilator (but they are mediocre bands so I wasn’t that surprised). Travis broke a cymbal on that night too I think.
The Crusade was a good album, despite all of the nay-sayers.
“It was nothing compared to Gojira, Sanctity, and Annihilator (but they are mediocre bands so I wasn’t that surprised).”
Whoops just read this and it sounded wrong. I meant, they were nothing compared to Trivium :3
anyone who refers to their music as “the gospel” is a douchebag IMO
Cha Brahs! You should make a best of album for us so we don’t have to do it ourselves!
Call me bitter… but this seems like an attempt to boost album sales by, oddly enough, trying to connect with the p2p generation.
If the music is good enough a good friend will burn you a cd anyways…
…like the Absence.
and if its a Trivium t-shirt… The Absence will burn it for you and give you a better shirt.
trivium is quite amazing, i think this is a great idea. Ive really enjoyed listening to their music change over the years. I hope people realize that every style of music out there today is un original unless of course you start something completely new….. that goes with out saying, but trivium is just playing a style they love and it sounds fucking amazing.
OK, i’ve never commented on here, but this post got me thinking (plus it’s 6am in the morning and i can’t fucking sleep!).
There are plenty of musicians who are against the whole intellectual property rights monopoly saga, but in all fairness it has jack shit to do with them. They didn’t sign a contract to make decisions within the company, they signed a contract to make music and be damn happy that they’re getting a pay cheque at the end of the day. The job of protecting artists from file sharing is the job of the employer, not the employee. File sharing exists, every man and his dog knows it exists, and Matt Heafy telling people to file share is like me telling people to file share. Don’t get me wrong, i like Trivium (well, i hated them until i saw them live, but they were fucking amazing), but this is the emptiest gesture i’ve seen in a while. Coming off the back of The Pirate Bay losing possibly the biggest case in file sharing history, which ended up having no effect in any way at all, Matt Heafy suddenly chimes in with “his own opinion” that file sharing is good. I’m sure he could have been an absolute prick about the whole file sharing thing, but i’m also sure that no executive from Roadrunner has come up to him yet and said “if you don’t help us cut down on file sharing you’re not getting half as much cash as we gave you for that last album”. I don’t know, maybe i’m just an angry young man, but i can’t help but think he could have made a more useful statement; like slagging off YouTube for removing every music video under the sun!
I know they want to be Metallica and everything and relive tape trading.
But they’re already an established band with tons of mallcore kiddies figuratively sucking their dicks.
God I hate that band.
The Axe | Are Podcasts The New Tape Trading? | “It seems modern bands feel the same also. Earlier this week the great Metal Sucks reported that Trivium’s, Matt Heafy asked fans to burn a top ten CD of the band’s music…”
http://theaxeblog.wordpress.com/2009/04/26/are-podcasts-the-new-tape-trading/
ha jarrod go cutt yourself and find someone who cares
Okay, let me get this straight. TRIVIUM, the face of commercialized, watered down metal for people who aren’t metal, wants to resurrect the mighty tape trading circuit that spawned the heaviest metals to come out of the 1980s. Jesus christ that’s wrong on so many levels. First of all, it doesn’t need resurrecting, there are still many dedicated metal heads who know damn well that the only way they’ll get that obscure classic they’re missing is from a likeminded metalhead, as there literally haven’t been new copies made in maybe 20 years. Second of all, burning a cd or worse, emailing mp3’s, is actually just a hair above oh say, FUCK ALL when it comes to time spent. It’s an insult to everyone who has ever pressed pause and record 50 times trying to get the end of the tape to end at the right time, an insult to anyone who’s ever cut and pasted a badass cover and took it down to the store to photocopy it. BURN TRIVIUM cd’s(like, with fire.)
you’re a bit of a mongoloid aren’t you?
Okay, I always love “the spread of word” thing but it doesn’t make sense this time after burning two Trivium mix cds.
Problem here: Trivium is not little-known. I mean, if someone never heard of this band, they probably don’t listen to metal at all. So it did take much persuasion to let this kind of people to give it a try. A buddy of mine was like: I would dig it if there were more tracks like The End (Roadrunner United). Get the picture? Music itself is the obstacle. So, how to deal with it? Make thrash-pop stuff like ATR’s Overcome? Just kidding. Trivium won’t follow suit, I know. lol
Another problem here: No stimulation!! Imagine a kid works super hard and burns 100 cds, trying to let everyone know about his fave band, what will he gain? Nothing.
I personally think the best thing for Trivium is to do LOG- Wrath-esque promotion next time, like select 100 fans to win Trivium guitar lessons, concert tickets and stuff. It will work, trust me.
Trivium inspired me to make music, and Im making music. I practice guitar for hours upon hours a day, because they were just Kids, playing music and got somewhere. People are just bitter-Look at it this way
Matt and the guys coulda crumbled from the pressure and be gone now, or have sold out completely-For those of you who haven’t listened to Shogun, GO FUCKING DO SO! Its nothing like The Crusade-Its TRIVIUM, The crusade was Trivium in a new light. Big deal, people change and make mistakes.
If it weren’t for Matt and the band, I’d probably be just like the rest of you narrow-minded pricks.
File sharing/CD burning/Mixtapes is great! Bands don’t get paid that much, and in this changing time, bands just need their music to be heard. Time for a REAL revolution-Metal style.
Time to overthrow and annihilate the things we’ve known up til now and get uncomfortable. Only then will we be able to break free and start afresh.
ALSO…
People need to have something to hold onto in their age-for the 80s, kids were into metallica…
We need something to define our time-and Trivium are THE band for that IMO. I would prefer the lyrical themes of Ascendancy-BUT-I stand and wait in anticipation for the next album, regardless of what they do next-I’ll thirst for their music like I have done up until now.
Ive got each album before release. And bought them anyways :D. leart every single song and handed it all over to my friends :). and the cycle shall continue!
COME BACK TO WALES!!
