SHADOWS FALL’S “KING OF NOTHING” > METALLICA’S “KING NOTHING”

Word on the street is that the new Shadows Fall album, Retribution, is one heavy motherfucker, and the first song released off the record, “King of Nothing,” would seem to confirm this. It’s already a shitton heavier than anything off of Threads of Life; this sounds like classic Shads, with enough of a musical progression to keep it interesting. If anyone still doubts that Bachand and Donais can bring the shred, this should shut ‘em up, and my neck already hurts from just one quick listen/headbanging session.

And, of course, having a guest spot by Randy Blythe doesn’t hurt.

Check out the song here. Retribution comes out September 15.

And just for shits n’ giggles, if you’re really bored at work, watch the mediocre Metallica video for the mediocre Metallica song of similar name after the jump.

  1. Sammy says:

Probably Newsted’s favorite song because you can actually hear him on the song.

  2. Cavorka says:

I think this song is awesome!

BUT…..I somehow have the scary feeling that this is going to be one of the few heavy songs on Retribution, will wait and see how it turns out….

    • Nick says:

I saw them play another of their new songs live and it was just as heavy as this if not heavier. I’m pretty sure they’re focusing on making this album very heavy.

  3. bearwizard says:

post 80s metallica really did bring the slamz

  4. Sammy says:

And yes, that new SF song kicks ass. Nice solo. Great vocals, if somewhat weak, been there lyrics.

  5. Slaughterhouse says:

    The new song is sick!!!!!!!

  6. Brett says:

This song is fantastic but where’s randy? i don’t hear him anywhere

  7. Brett says:

nm found him he’s at the end :D

  8. bearbomb says:

    Shads?

  9. Kyle says:

Brian Fair is a terrible singer. I Can’t listen to Shadows Fall just because of him.

    • Rik says:

      Truth.

      • kevin says:

Unfortunately I agree. I just can’t get into the band becuase of his vocals. Other then that they are top notch, but his vocals are kind of a deal breaker 4 me.

        • groverXIII says:

I like Shadows Fall in spite of his vocals… he’s decent, but why does it sound like he started every word with a ‘W’, whether it has one or not?

    • Sin and Death says:

Fair is a good vocalist with decent cleans, but Bachand has better cleans and shreds like nobody’s business.

    • metalguy says:

hes losing his growl or he just doesnt use it anymore. his cleans are great but immediately ruined thius siong

      • i think says:

his vocals are the reason i dont like the band.. i’ll listen to the musical parts but as soon as he starts he sounds strained and uninteresting. he just kind of wobbles on throughout the song not changing anything or bring anything to the band

  10. kevin says:

Shads? jesus man, please never say that again

  11. erock says:

Good to see you guys still take your mandatory shot at Metallica in every third post.

I can’t take this band seriously because the singer still has 90’s dreadlocks.

  12. Spanky says:

Shadows Fall is still sick as fuck!

  13. myke says:

i dig it ill give the record a chance once it uhh leaks???

  14. Matt says:

Sick song, am now excited for the album.

  15. groverXIII says:

Definitely a great song… hopefully it’s an indication of the direction they’ll be taking with the album. The Art Of Balance is still my favorite of their albums, so it’s noce to hear them getting a little bit of that heaviness and that edge back.

  16. TrapThem says:

    gets a big ol’ meh

  17. 36thoughtless says:

    nope, fail

  18. Mark Gavin says:

King Nothing sounds kind of good in retrospect, since Hetfield still actually kind of sounds like Hetfield.

    • Jake says:

Agreed. One of the two good songs off “Load” (”Ain’t My Bitch” being the other). Shadows Fall was always kind of ‘meh’ to me. I bought “Threads of Life’ for $3 and wasn’t too impressed. I listened to it once or twice, and that was it.

  19. You Don't Know Me says:

Yeah… it sounds like Shadows Fall circa “The Art of Balance”, but that’s not saying a whole hell of a lot. They’ve never been a spectacular band. They’re a band that you listen to occasionally because they have some decent songs. I’d take Metallica’s “King Nothing” over this anyday. At least “King Nothing” is memorable.

    • Bicro says:

True. One of the few good ones off that album.

      • rayray says:

I could not agree more. They are an average metal band. I do like them but never ever go back to their old albums and are wowed by them. No idea why just dont care. This song is great though.

  20. superapearmy says:

    Very good song!

  21. Mike says:

Great playing, lousy singing. I think the only reason that they keep him is as a gimmick and to look to cool kidz who are just discovering them. King Nothing was a bad-ass Metallica song.

  22. dot says:

i don’t get why there are people who like lamb of god but don’t like shadows fall. LoG sounds monotonous and one-dimensional in comparison.

    • superapearmy says:

I like both but this comment is very true. They are not as bad as Hatebreed their albums sound like one song and LoG have some great songs and some that sound the exact same.

    • tim says:

epic, epic fail. I’m generally open-minded when it comes to music, but I actually dislike you as a person because of what you just said.

  23. CrapMcPoopin says:

    false.

  24. pokesmot says:

shadows fall is awesome.Stoked for the new album.
Could you imagine if Phil from ATR still sang for Shadows Fall?
And to the people that wrote these two lines
“King Nothing was a bad-ass Metallica song”
“I’d take Metallica’s “King Nothing” over this anyday. At least “King Nothing” is memorable.”
stop hitting the crack pipe anything post bob rock Metallica is shit and very easy to forget

    • erock says:

Uh . . . The only thing Post-Bob Rock was Death Magnetic. Pretty sure King Nothing wasn’t on that album.

  25. bucketochicken says:

I really don’t know what to think about either song or band discussed above, as Ziltoid has yet to weigh in. Until I’m told what to think, I’ll reserve judegement.

    Ziltoid, I await your command.

  26. big_red01027 says:

The riffs are good, the vocals not so much. As usual.

Saying Randy is on the song is a cocktease.

  27. TheHardG says:

two bad ass songs….thats all i gotta say

  28. NPC says:

I was waiting for the part of the song where it got interesting… Whooooops.

  29. Dave B says:

    verse riff is boring…..

  30. Ender^Wiggin says:

Ah the old game of boosting metal cred by bashing post AJFA Metallica.

  31. Facebook User says:

What a badass song! I havent really liked anything after The War Within but that gives me hope for Shadows Fall.

  32. Me says:

not a memorable song after first listen. maybe it’ll change on me. war within is a classic metal album in my book and I don’t consider Shadows Fall generic metalcore. this song seemed to start off as generic metalcore in my book (and I’m quite the lenient one when it comes to that label). not TOO promising.

  33. nick says:

So uh, thats all it took to get randy’s name in the credits, huh?

  34. Fuck Shadows Fall. Threads of Life was absolutely terrible. I don’t even know what was worse, their music or the artwork. It looked like they went to a local elementary school, pulled a picture off of a classroom wall and said “fuck it, its our new artwork.”

This song might be better than anything on Threads of Life, but it still just plain sucks. Brian Fairs vocals are absolutely terrible and ruins it.
