WINDS OF PLAGUE’S THE GREAT STONE WAR: TWO GUYS, A GIRL, AND A PASSABLE METALCORE

In an episode of The Cosby Show, perhaps one of the least metal sitcoms the ‘80s produced, Bill Cosby’s Heathcliff Huxtable tells his learning disabled son, Theo, that he would rather see him bring home a “hard C” instead of an “easy A” after he struggled with a particular assignment. What this potentially says about black America in the Reagan era – results don’t matter, so long as you’re working hard toward them – is possibly troubling, but when applied to California blackened metalcore band Winds of Plague, it’s surprisingly complementary. Though pulling out all the stops all the time fails more often than it succeeds, the band manage to make their latest album, The Great Stone War, a really, really fun and interesting mess. Their hodgepodge of riffs and motifs doesn’t reach an iwrestledabearonce-level of drek, but also doesn’t display the cohesiveness and songwriting prowess of, well, a solid band. But in terms of the latter, in a genre as flogged beyond death and into bone dust as metalcore, mixing it up by any means necessary has more potential to yield results than keeping your cookie dough inside a Poison the Well-shaped cutter. Complain about Winds of Plague’s melodramatic breakdown-o-rama as much as you like: at least they’re trying something different. Or, at least, different enough to stand out for the time being.

Winds of Plague’s basic M.O. is taking Dimmu Borgir’s “Progenies of the Great Apocalypse” and turning it into a metalcore SONG: catchy grooves augmented by histrionic orchestration. This would collapse into an eye roll-worthy mess (see: Bleeding Through) were the riffs not somewhat decent and the orchestrations not so delightfully over the top. The breakdowns aren’t revolutionary, but they work. Keyboardist/token hot girl Kristen Randall is trying way too hard to justify her place in the band, but in doing so, she manages to lay down an prodigious groundwork for the guitars to bounce off of just as often as broadcasting a mangled plea for attention. Though perhaps not the sort of epic they were going for, The Great Stone War’s bigness is captivating in its own bloated way. The album’s most egregious moments (Randall’s more pointless stretches of Yamaha noodling, the incredibly random emergence of tough guy hardcore vocals sporadically throughout) are absorbed in the band’s ridiculously grandiose ambition, and come off as a laughable misstep instead of an indicator of what’s wrong with the band.

What is wrong with the band, of course, is that, at the end of the day, they’re still a metalcore (or deathcore, or whatever) band. After the last decade, it’s hard to get pumped about another 35 minutes or so of mediocre breakdowns, no matter how they’re framed. But for Winds of Plague, the framing – The Great Stone War is a concept album about the final battle before the downfall of society and the apocalypse – works surprisingly well. In terms of being a good metal album, The Great Stone War is somewhat of a failure. But it’s a wonderful failure. It’s much more rewarding to see a band try and fall flat on their face in lieu of another bunch of reheated Meshuggah riffs recast as breakdowns. While the result is a slightly above average album, the effort they exude to breathe new life into a wrinkled corpse of a genre makes that “above” part count, even if it’s preceded by “slightly.”

You, sir, have illuminated me to the ways of the world. Thank you for the time and effort that you have put into such a bold set of words, the phrasing of which could not be repeated for fear of being the greatest prose the world has ever known.

so what your basically saying is that the album sucks, but you thought it would be better, so you’re trying to defend to yourself how someone that can make such a cool concept (and cover-art) can let you and the rest of the world down that badly? (hope that makes sense to you…)

I love music, but only when it’s actually great. Most fails at even being tolerable.

  • rupert

this album was pretty damn bad, which is disappointing because this band has a good bit of potential. as i listened to this album is was drawn in by the epic concept of the album, and the artwork. However, the problem with this album is not vocals, drumming, or fretwork ect. it was how the songs themselves were done. i found my self just getting into the song, when it would randomly change tempo or just change all together. song after song i would find saying this sounds great but how long will it last, which was the main problem with this album. the songs started out good but then got butt-fucked, by a random breakdown or some bull shit symphonic shit. (i am not saying i dont enjoy breakdowns or “symphonic shit”, but they must be done right.) also the good parts of the songs were never repeated , and they had no real choruses, or anything that would make the listener remember the song. all in all if the band had more order to their songs then this album could have been on the list with the best of 09, but instead its fucking awful.

  • Armando

I don’t know if it’s just me but the first actual track from the album (“Forged in Fire”) sounds an awful lot like Dethklok’s “Briefcase Full of Guts.” Which brings up the question: When will the new fucking season start?!

  • Timothy Plague

I love Winds of Plague, obviously…but I hate to say that I am quite disappointed in this album due to song structures and the basic idea of yet another “concept album”. It isn’t that bad…I guess I just expected more, that’s all….

I would skip a track and it would sound like the same song! There were only 2 parts (small parts) that actually stuck out to me. Which is not good seeing as how I actually spend money on this stuff. lol
    I found myself bored a few times…

But Ooooo Welll…I still love em’!

    • Nate

you mean… it sounds exactly like their first album?

i give this album a -5 out of 5, its 100% shit. only way to honestly like this band and their music video for the butt impaler or what ever it was is to be a little fred durst upper middle class rich boy in a 59/50 hat. this is the fucking new wave of nu metal. but even nu metal had some bands that were better(yet still not good) then this wigger slam bullshit.

    • taylor

      so this is wigger slam?
i still am a little vague on what exactly that is

      • Sam

I like that term “wigger slam” I think that should be a new genre. But I don’t think it categorizes this music.

  • http://ultimateposerblog.blogspot.com Ultimate Poser Blog

Am I the only guy here who actually loves this album? (tumbleweed blows by)… guys?

  • derek

this band frustrates me because i like their riffs, drums, ect. but they are just bad songwriters. i think if they arranged their songs properly they would be pretty good.

The cover reminds me of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.

    • bobloo

that is where the main influence of the cover was taken.not warcraft..and not some shitty cover art from some no name flame band.

  • kylemurder

The only band on summer slaughter that i made an effort to walk outside to miss their set. Giving a single listen to this album will cause loss of brain cells. Negative 5 horns.

  • rupert

Question. Why do the dudes on the cover have swords, if it is the great stone war they should be fighting with stones goddammit.

    • bagel

      are you fucking retarded

      • macedonia

        your name is bagel

  • Malacoda

At least they didn’t give it a 4.5 like I expected.

  • Richard

Got this leak a few days ago. Listened to the whole album TWICE. Needless to say I will never waste my not-so-precious time on this shit, boring, uninspired, useless, etc. band ever again.

  • That Mean Guy

Holy crap this band is absolutely the worst band to have formed in the last twenty years. Worst fit for Summer Slaughter… total mall metal “wigger slam” BS. (love it… wigger slam… but let’s qualify it “rich kid wigger slam”). So freaking fake it’s unbelievable.
You can even tell because fans of this band are total douche nozzles who never listened to music before in their life. It’s like this band and the people who like them went straight from listening to the Jonas Brothers and Hannah Montana to adopting “metal” and their new found hobby.

    BOO.

This album deserves a -10/10 on the Easy Listening scale… a damn -100 / 10 on ANY metal scale.

So today’s lesson is this: just because you are some rich over-privileged white suburban douches from OC don’t mean you can write or play any type of metal/death metal…. especially “rich kid wigger slam”… cause… that shit is real yo.

    Idiots.

    • Timothy Plague

      Funny….

    • Fong Chung

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah I’ve got a few nude photos of their keyboardist. I’m very sure, that everyone in the metalcore community has given her a fudge sickle or two before all over her chest.

        There’s more than one?

I thought the album was okay, I really enjoyed Decimate The Weak more. I know it was generic, cliche, whatever, I know all that but it was a really fun album.

I really think Winds of Plague were infact managed wrong by Century Media. Their video for “The Impaler” was absolutely terrible. They should have never have shot a video for that song anyway. Century Media should have stepped in and filmed a video for the title track “Decimate The Weak”.

    Why?..

    “From the depths i’ve risen…”
    DECIMATE THE WEAK!
“I’ve come to take your lives”
    DECIMATE THE WEAK!
    “Another step closer to death.
    Only the strong survive.”
    DECIMATE THE WEAK!
    “Another step closer…
    Only the strong survive.”
    DECIMATE THE WEAK!

That one part right there, may be “wigger”, it may be “mallcore” but it also is fucking CATCHY.
    …and it would have sold.

If Brock Lesner came out to that in the UFC, Winds of Plague would be outselling Unearth this week.

    • Timothy Plague

Yea man, Brock should do that! haha

HaHa I think Winds of Gay pretty sums it up.

This has nothing to do with an annoying pierced tattooed girl who loves them. Nothing at all to do with her not wanting to have intercourse with me either. Still I wonder why when we fooled around she told my friend I came on too strong when at the time she made no sign of protest whatsoever and in fact indicated she liked it. Whatever she jumps from disco stick to disco stick and I digress because this has NOTHING to do with Winds of Gay whatsoever.

These guys kinda remind me of Trivium. Trying too hard at everything to be able to accomplish much more then mediocrity. Also trying overly hard for tough imagery like only a confused closeted homo could succeed at.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Colin-OConnor/1491245262 Colin O’Connor

PS to the dude who says it looks like the new Tekken cover…LOL…

I was thinking that or a gay World of Warcraft tribute.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Colin-OConnor/1491245262 Colin O’Connor

Seriously though look at that fucking cover. I know I was about ten years old when I thought shit like that was cool. These guys are total douches.

  • groverXIII

This album was better than I truly expected, but then again, my expectations were pretty low. There’s some good ideas here, but they can’t decide if they want to be symphonic metal or deathcore, and in the end they aren’t all that great at either. Still, I’ve heard worse. I may give it a few more listens before I decide whether I’m going to keep it or delete it.

  • Adam

    Damn fine album!

  • Johnny

Even though I’m not a big fan of this band I’D LIKE TO SEE ANY OF YOU DO BETTER

  • Brandan

I do have to say i really did like this album. Now i do like plenty of different types of metal, i really dont care if its -core anything, i just call it metal. I love stuff from epic melodic to hardcore. People have been going on about how this album sucks and the band is “wigger slam”. I will agree with the wigger comment but only because johnny is a wigger, but just because the lead singer is a wigger doesnt make the music “wigger slam”. Now yes there are a shit load of -core bands out there, but there have been worse. I honestly do love this band and i really get into the songs. Sure they arent the best but i still like them. Obviously this whole review is opinion based so heres mine. Also, im almost positive that none of you are in a band and that none of you have put this much effort in to anything so seriously just give them credit, if you dont like it then so be it, you have a right to your own opinion, but after reading what all you guys have put, you really don’t give them much of a chance at all.

  • CottonCandyCockSock

ok so i kinda fuckin love this album too…i would give it a 4…there is room for improvement, but this album shows more of their capabilities than Decimate the Weak which was pretty much “just another deathcore album” with symphonies that felt forced in at the last second, whereas this one seems to have it all put together much better..

    just my opinion

  • Austin Selby

FUCK. YOU. ALLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!! Metal sucks? Is that what is says? Metalsucks.net? Metal is the only genre of music that sounds, um good. This album kicks so much ass. I appreciate the people who say that the album doesn’t suck, it’s just how they feel. It’s Just like and agnostic person saying, “I don’t believe in god” when an atheist says, “God isn’t real”. Just because you say it sucks doesn’t mean it does. There are millions and millions of people in the world who love this album. Sure it’s not the best, I can say the for sure. They could use more guitar solos, but it was a great motha’ fuckin’ album. This band is death-core no dout. Not a sign of getting softer. If anyone who agrees with what I’m sayin’ E-mail me. Tell me how much bull-shit it is what these guys are sayin’. Can’t stand the album, then death-core isn’t for you. Death-core isn’t for everyone. Only people who are bad-ass enough can listen to it. So if you are a bad-ass, listen to these guys. If you aren’t, leave.

    Thank you readers.

  • trav

fuck everybody that says winds of plague is gay! there not that bad
