THE TITLE REFERS TO THE NUMBER OF FORMER MEMBERS OF MEGADETH

Monday, August 17th, 2009 at 12:30pm by

I’ve had Endgame for over a month now, and I still find the following to be true:

  1. It’s the best Megadeth album since Countdown.
  2. The best material from the album still hasn’t been released for public consumption.

Still, the most recently-unveiled new song, “1,320,” is pretty friggin’ sweet. And I’m sure if I listened to the lyrics, the title would make more sense to me. But after United Abominations, I vowed never to pay close attention to Dave Mustaine’s lyrics again. It’s for my own personal enjoyment, y’know?

Endgame comes out September 15 on Roadrunner.

Who would have thought that almost 20 years after their “golden age”, it would be Megadeth that, out of the “big four”, would be holding up the better?

  • Tommy Lindbergsen

Nope, I still don’t like Megadeth.

  • Frampler

They will never escape the awfulness of Dave’s voice. Would have been an amazing instrumental band, IMHO.

    • Tommy Lindbergsen

      Agreed.

    • Sammy

Guess it’s all a matter of personal taste. I’ve always liked his “sneer” vocal.

  • Meemperor

Awesome song about Drag Racing. The Lyrics mostly make sense, and if you’ve ever been down the 1/4mile you can related with them. This song will definitely appear on videos all over streetfire in the future.

    Long live Megadeth.

Is it me or is the snare way to high up in the mix?

    • zhitnik

I wouldn’t take this copy too seriously…it is still horribly compressed (and probably recompressed) on YouTube…

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Rohit-Gupta/666005820 Rohit Gupta

i don’t know because that snare sounds like the standard Sneap snare sample. And most stuff Sneap did (I.E. Nevermore, Arch Enemy, Onslaught) has that same overbearing snare.

        • Fufkin

          Yup it’s the same one.

  • zhitnik

Oh no, I just listened to the first few seconds and it reminded me of that horrible song off of So Far, So Good, So What….502. Funny the names are so similar too…hopefully this one doesn’t have Dave imitating a police siren…ha

  • Ziltoid

Just like Headcrusher, it’s another boring, soulless song that sounds like shit thank to Andy Sneap’s “pancake-like” compressed production. This song is so boring that it isn’t even funny.

    • metalguy

id have to agree. both are good as thrash songs, but dont hold up to other megadeth songs

    • groverXIII

I’m going to make a Ziltoid comment generator and use it to generate comments whenever a link is posted to a band… it will refer to everything as “boring”, “the worst thing I’ve ever heard”, and occasionally it will throw in a “weedly weedly”.

/Why yes, I am saying that you’re starting to sound like a broken record.

      • Ziltoid

Haha, I want to see this. It would save me some time posting here.

Ironically, I’d vary up my comments if MS varied up the selection of bands they write about (preferably good bands as well).

Yea because we all know how your tastes are far too superb than the rest of ours…damn you’re one close minded son of a bitch

          • Ziltoid

I’m open minded. My one prerequisite is that the music has to be good. Is that too much to ask for?

          • Dave

Close minded probably applies better to all the people who only listen to shitty metalcore.

    • Sammy

Ziltoid, the problem is not that you require music to be good before you like it. Everyone has that prereq. The problem is that you state your *tastes* in music as if you were stating fact and as if anyone who disagrees must be stupid or have no taste.

      • groverXIII

You know, I was always trying to put into words what bugs me about Zilty’s posts… you just summed it up neatly. Well done.

        • Gecko

Sammy, that was probably the smartest reply to Ziltoid I’ve ever seen. Summed things up perfectly, and without coming off like a jackass trying to start a war of words that goes absolutely nowhere. Also, for what it’s worth, I really dug this track. I haven’t been feeling anything from Mustaine and Co. lately, but this definitely brings me back into the fold. Yay!

          • zhitnik

Headcrusher was great…not the best Megadeth ever, but after you’ve made “Wake up Dead”, and “Holy Wars…”, its pretty tough to match. Still glad to see a metal legend pump out some solid material…I definitely have a soft spot for Megadeth as they helped me through some bleak times in my life…it is always nostalgic when I hear Dave’s snarl….

  • Dan Marsicano

Wasn’t too bad; some solid solos and a frantic pace. Enjoyed “Headcrusher” a lot more thought.

I wonder though; after ten-plus comments, where are the die-hard Megadeth fans bragging about how these songs are way better than anything off of Death Magnetic?

    • Meemperor

They are better than anything of Death Magnetic. TSHF and UA were both superior albums to Death Magnetic too.

    • Sean

Probably because Metallica haven’t produced anything relevant since Justice

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Rob-Kurkjian/1238131077 Rob Kurkjian

I would say thats a stretch Death Magnetic isn’t bad in my oppinion dry yes bad no. I think its a major step in the right direction just not amazing. I enjoyed it

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mark-Gavin/1396340262 Mark Gavin

The intro reminds me a lot of “Liar”. In fact, Headcrusher reminded me a lot of Into the Lungs of Hell/Set The World Afire… sounds like we have a “So Far So Good So What! 2″ on it’s way, which is fine with me.

  • Mike2

finally, Axl is gonna stop bashing on Dave Mustaine, now all Metallica has to do is release ONE good album and they’re gonna have Axl’s respect forever…

  • Sacajawea

What’s wrong with the UA lyrics? Megadeth’s lyrics have always been about corrupt politics, government becoming too big, etc. I like their lyrics.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mark-Gavin/1396340262 Mark Gavin

I lol every time I hear “HEY JIHAD JOE, GUESS WHAT! WE’RE COMIN’ TO GET YOU!”

But honestly as much as I love MegaDave I’ve never really taken his lyrics “seriously”. I like his clever wordplay and such but he’s never been too deep.

      • JustGrimace

I always thought that was meant to be tongue-in-cheek, like those old wartime propaganda films in WW2. I thought it was a pretty cool approach to the song, actually.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mark-Gavin/1396340262 Mark Gavin

Haha, I see what you mean. The whole “Amerikastahn” song sounds like a military propaganda recording regardless, I just find the line amusing.

      • Joshie

I lol’d at the “SOMEDAY I’LL DANCE ON YOUR GRAVE…..EVEN IF YOU’RE BURIED AT SEA!”

  • JustGrimace

What I want to know is if so many people have it, why hasn’t it leaked yet?

    • zhitnik

No kidding…been searching for a leak almost every day. And before someone gets all pissed off about piracy, I own the entire Megadeth catalogue…I just can’t wait till it hits stores!

  • groverXIII

Great song… and if the rest of the album is even better, then I’m going to really like this album.

  • Ken M

That opening riff sounds like something off of SFSGSW!!! Fuck yes. love the little drum break then solo they threw in there! Megadave’s still got it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Andrs-C-Ruiz/692879149 Andrés C. Ruiz

As huge of a Megadeth fan as I am, this song really sucks donkey dick. That intro riff sucks, and the drums don’t go well with it at all. The solos are simple mindless shredding rather than actual solos you’ll remember, and there’s not a single part of the song where you can sing along.

    Lame.

    • Ken M

oh i know i totally agree with you…i mean where is the old school megadeth that wrote hooks like “moto psycho” or “crush em”.

  • steverazor

I don’t understand you people. Do you want to go back to the days of nu-metal or grunge? We are living in a golden age of awesome metal music – geeze! Even though I have lost a lot of respect for that delusional, christian douche-nozzle, Mustaine has dialed up a winner with this song. Hope the rest of the album is as good as this.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Matt-Dasher/30826541 Matt Dasher

Agree on everything you said. Mustaine is a Megadouche (and always has been) but Meghadeth fucking rules and the contemporary scene is WAY better than 1999s. Yeah, deathcore is annoying but at least it has more influence from real metal than nu metal did.

  • dick?

so what it’s not tornado of souls, or 5 magics…hell even washington is next…

but still, this song has some serious stuff going on.
plenty of solid guitar work, and for all of you bitch about Sneap’s production…
have you ever really enjoyed Ozzy’s recent exploits with churko?
and in case you haven’t seen this…

OZZY PROBABLY WON’T MAKE A GOOD ALBUM AGAIN. And this part kills me. Kevin Churko – the same guy responsible for Black Rain (as well as material for Celine Dion and Britney Spears) – is producing again, and Wylde has been saying he was supposed “finish” the album in September, suggesting they’ve already done a good amount of work. If Gus G. is ostensibly being brought as a session guitarist who won’t be allowed to make substantive creative contributions, then we’ll probably get a lot of awesome guitar solos on what is otherwise, and for the third or fourth time now, a completely mediocre and forgettable Ozzy album.

now where have i read this before…

Nothing wrong with that. That’s what I thought but it shreds

  • Fufkin

Dave’s damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t and damned if he sits n the fence between doing and not doing.
Axl is right, Endgame is indeed is the best Megadeth album since Countdown but it surprises me to see the negative reactions from some to this preview song. I can’t understand people being so dissatisfied with it – production preferences notwithstanding. It’s like some so called fans revel in moaning about their so called favourite bands. What is it you want Megadeth to do? Write another Holy Wars? Oh come on…
