POLL: IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN TIME TO SEE ONE PARTICULAR TOUR, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Monday, October 26th, 2009 at 1:30pm by Vince Neilstein

I love playing ths game. The famed Metallica + GN’R + Faith No More run would have to be close to the top of my list. Soundgarden supporting Spoonman. Motley Crue supporting Too Fast For Love. King’s X on the Dogman tour, for sure… check out this performance [sent in by Shane Gillis] of the title track from that incredible record, filmed on the short-lived Jon Stewart show no less.

If you had a time machine that could take you back to any one specific tour (but ONLY one), who would you go see?

    Trendkill tour!!!!!!!! No question!!!!!!!

  2. msv81 says:

    Tool in support of “Undertow”!

  3. pdf says:

My pick isn’t exactly metal, but if you’ve heard the albums recorded at some of these concerts, you know the line gets kinda blurry: I would give almost anything to have seen Miles Davis’s Japanese tour of 1975. At that point he had a band consisting of Sonny Fortune (saxophones and flute), Pete Cosey (electric guitar), Reggie Lucas (electric guitar), Michael Henderson (electric bass), Mtume (percussion), and Al Foster (drums) and was playing music that sounded like a mix of jazz-rock fusion, metal and ultra-hard funk, plus some ambient electronic stuff at the margins. Check out the albums Agharta and Pangaea to hear what I’m talking about, and Dark Magus for some even noisier and more metallic stuff from a year earlier. Fucking ferocious.

Death headlining in 1991 with Pestilence opening (martin van drunen on vocals yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa)

  5. KingVEE says:

    …..and justice for all!

  6. Facebook User says:

Without an ounce of hesitation or equivocation it would be Metallica’s Damaged Justice tour. Holy fuck. I’d trade my left leg to see them live then. Unfortuantely I was 9 and still listening to MC Hammer. Still rock the Seattle DVD all the time when I get loaded!

  7. Dysenteric says:

The Earache Grindcrusher tour of 1989: Bolt Thrower, Carcass, Napalm Death, Morbid Angel.

I were only a baby when this tour happened. If only I’d've been there…

  8. Kuranes says:

I saw the GnR/Metallica/FNM tour. I am awesome.

  9. skl says:

Carcass’s Heartwork tour or anything At The Gates.

  10. Gunnar says:

Shawn Lane, though I don’t care when. Just to see Shawn Lane play once live would be amazing.

RIP The greatest guitarist who ever lived.

  11. BigJordowski says:

Tool’s AEnima tour or Opeth’s Blackwater Park tour

    • Josh says:

I was gonna say that. I remember Tool played this smaller venue in my hometown when Aenima came out and I had to miss it due to work. I figured, “Meh, they’ll be back…” Yeah, they came back, and played arenas.

I would say I would have loved to see Alice In Chains back during the Facelift/Dirt days, or NIN during the “Self-Destruct” Tour in ‘93

    • Tim the enchanter says:

I saw the Aenima show in Seattle w/ The Melvins…it was fuckin great.
      Man; Tool was hella-loud.

  12. FarBeyondJuban says:

No Fuckin’ Frills Tour (Pantera and Skid Row)…I believe that was just before Pantera released VDOP. Or Pantera in support of FBD. At the Gates or Tool would have been ridiculous.

But, one tour I do get to see is the Mastodon/Dethklok tour on the 29th at the Hammerstein Ballroom.

    • I seen them last Wednesday, it was fucking sickkkkkk. Sucked sitting through Converge though, just a bunch of coked out idiots jumping on stage with no melody and the vocals sounded like garbage. Mastodon and Dethklok were insane live, they both sounded perfect and Brendon Smalls does some funny ass stuff when hes up there.

      • bradylikesbigbird says:

yeah converge is straightedge i believe

        • Sanscard says:

Figures. I’ve listened to a lot of hard core in my day, going back to seeing bands like Black Flag and Minor Threat live, but Converge is just annoying to my ears. Not looking forward to their set this Saturday…

          • Is Converge straight edge? I never heard that before…at least they dont promote it out front like so many other douches do. They just jumped around like lunatics the ENTIRE time, so I figured they were coked out lol. I just think Converge didnt fit the tour, and they played like 5 songs too many, but they all sounded the same…gave me a reason for a smoke break though before Mastodon!!

          • Sanscard says:

Dunno, but it wouldn’t surprise. Straightedge types are usually pretty hyper/uptight in my experience. There are exceptions of course…

      • Facebook User says:

        your a fucking moron….

    • Bobby Tims says:

      ill be there this thursday

  13. timmah says:

Pink Floyd…I’ve seen the Pulse tour DVD and that it was awesome, but I think ‘The Wall’ tour would have been awesome as well.

  14. cosk says:

melt banana when they toured with cell scape (not exactly metal, but not exactly not metal)

  15. Chase says:

easy european clash of the titans Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, Testament, Alice in chains, soundgarden

  16. I Hate Ziltoid aka Nacho Cheese Doritos says:

Nirvana. In Utero tour. Would have been killer.

  17. NoNameNoSlogan says:

Haha I saw the Metallica/GNR/FNM show in Pontiac Michigan…first show I ever saw. I would’ve preferred to see Metallica during their Master of Puppets tour or the Damaged Justice tour.

  18. bearbomb says:

“The Extreme Steel Tour” – Pantera, Slayer, Static-X, Morbid Angel. Even though I’ve seen all those band separately, it would’ve been cool to see them together.

I’ve been pretty lucky in life to not miss crucial shows. Go me!

    • MetalMatt says:

Saw that show in Hamilton. Fucking awesome!

    • i was at the tour before that with MA, Pantera, Soulfly, and Nothingface. it was badass.

    • Biff Tannen says:

I went ONLY for Morbid Angel. They ruled, while all the little rebel flag bandana wearing, white trash trailor titans stood around and scratched their heads.
When Pantera came on, I laughed for 75 minutes straight. Non stop hilarity ! Between the morons on stage and the toothless morons in the crowd !

It was a fucking HOOT, I tell ya’!

      • bearbomb says:

Did Pantera gang-bang your mom or something once? I hate a lot of bands too, but your hate for them seems to go beyond music… and mental health. I ask because I care.

        • R. Joseph Smith says:

You know? I fucking can’t stand this cockcucker. I was lucky enough to have met Pantera when they came through for CFH with Biohazard and Megadeth (I think). And honestly at that time I was more into Biohazard and I said so to Dimebag. And you know what? The man was a fucking saint! He was the most down to earth cat. He sat and shot the shit with us three little teenage dorks giving us Heinekens and literally the shirt off his back. The man even gave us fucking cab fare to get from cleveland to canton ohio because our ride ditched us. I’m so fucking sick of fucking punk-ass bitches like this fucker trying to shit on Pantera.

          • R. Joseph Smith says:

Just to clarify, in my second sentence I misspelled the word COCKSUCKER. Because it’s important to know I meant to call Biff Tannen a COCKSUCKER.

          • SlickerDrip says:

I’m sure Mr. Tannen didn’t notice, since he spelled “trailer” wrong. I guess he’s educated, who am I to argue.

          • bearbomb says:

Yeah he’s pretty much a troll. I have a friend who met Dime and Vinny and she has nothing but great things to say too. Color me jealous, but grateful to have seen him play live.

      • Josh says:

My band opened up for Morbid Angel back in the day. Trey Azagthoth was a stuck-up tool.

    • Yes, I would’ve killed to see that tour. That’s about as awesome as no frills balls to the wall metal can get. The other one I would’ve love to have seen, and still kick myself for missing: SYL and Meshuggah. I hate that I missed that.

  19. ceth carter says:

Would loved to have seen Pantera supporting Far Beyond Driven, just never got the chance. And by the way, John Stewart had many many excellent musical guests on his show. His show was very under rated in my opinion and he was normally right on with his music,he had a lot of harder rock/metal type acts on at the time. I always enjoyed that show.

  20. McWeen says:

RHCP, Pearl Jam and Nirvana tour in ‘91

  21. SHOCKTROOP says:

definitely metallica, gnr, faith no more. no doubt. although pantera, slayer, static-x , and morbid angel would rank up there too.

  22. Blake says:

True story: Ozzy and Metallica were booked to play a venue in southern Oregon back in ‘86. The concert was canceled because of religious protesters. My buddy had tickets and everything.

Two weeks later, Cliff Burton was killed.

That’s how close my buddy was to catching Metallica in their prime.

    • Sanscard says:

I saw that tour in DC. Metallica was amazing. Orion was just perfect – I’d say they averaged 1.3X normal tempo on every song. I don’t remember anything about Ozzy’s set except he was fat, in spandex, and the power went out on him.

  23. MetalMatt says:

The Slayer/Pantera/Static-X/Morbid Angel was maybe the best one I HAVE seen.

I would kill to have seen Sepultura supporting Chaos A.D.

  24. Skanes says:

    Whitesnake, 1987.

  25. brookh says:

    The Wall and/or World Slavery

  26. Andy Paige says:

In ‘77 AC/DC was opening for Black Sabbath. Dude.

  27. yanky says:

    metallica ac\dc pantera
    moscow monsters of rock 92

  28. crank says:

Projekt Revolution in 2002,Linkin Park, Cypress Hill, DJ Z-Trip and Adema. This would have been amazing.

  29. Kelly says:

Pantera, 1996. I was a freshman in high school and not allowed to go.

  30. Paul Quinn says:

There are quite a few good “wish I coulda been there tours”, but I think the the Death – Sound of Perseverance Tour or Black Sabbath with Van Hallen opening at the Garden back in the 70’s are at the top of my list. Those are hard to argue.

    • sunpuke says:

I actually saw Black Sabbath and Van Halen on that tour at the Memphis Coliseum. Eddie lost control of his guitar and you could not hear Dave sing at all. Black Sabbath kicked ass! My seat was five rows from the stage and cost a whopping $6.75!

  31. MoonSnake says:

seeing ELP would’ve been a trip

  32. brian roach says:

Any Black Sabbath tour w/ Ozzy until 1977 or so. Would’ve been amazing to see them in their prime…

  33. IWRESTLEDYOURMOMONCE says:

Saw GNR, Metallica, FNM at the meadowlands. Guns sucked ass

Saw King’s X at the Roseland for Dogman. Brother Cane opened. Awesome show

Saw Clash of the Titans – Slayer, Anthrax, Testament, Megadeth and Alice In Chains. AIC got bood off the stage

    God I’m fucking OLD

    • brother cane!!!! what happened to those dudes?

      • Sammy says:

Brother Cane’s singer and bassist joined forces with Scott Rockenfield and latter day Queensryche guitarist Kelly Gray to form Slave to the System. It’s not metal by any stretch, but it’s very good hard rock. I have no idea what happened after their debut album.

  34. Bob says:

    Bungle -California

    Metallica-Master of Muppets

  35. Greg says:

Definitely not metal, but I’d go back to see The Smiths touring for The Queen is Dead. Just about every song they did was amazing.

  36. you do realize Soundgarden never had an album called “Spoonman” right?

  37. jagbag says:

I will be fair and only do a tour (or show, call it what you will) that I could have went to but didn’t have money for and it was kinda last minute…

That being the Give Me Ed Til Im Dead Tour in 2003.. Iron Maiden, Motorhead and Dio.

  38. Ajax says:

If I was born a month before this tour happened, I would have liked to catch the Seventh Tour of a Seventh Tour..Or maybe just the Monsters of Rock festival at Donnington. Iron Maiden with GN’R, Kiss and Megadeth in support. Someone invent a time machine.

    • Ajax says:

      If I wasn’t*

Regardless, I was born right before this tour happened and wasn’t metal enough as an infant.

    • Biff Tannen says:

FINALLY, Someone on here has good taste. I was only 6 when this tour happend. Goddamn I wish I was there !!! I’ll just have to watch the “Maiden England” video AGAIN.

      • Ajax says:

Yeah, dude. It would have been a sick fest to go to. I’m not a huge fan of Kiss and stuff but I mean they are respectable for obvious reasons. But just Maiden in general would have been awesome to see back in their prime.

  39. Mark Gavin says:

I would have loves to see Cacophony. Or any Jason Becker performance

  40. bearbomb says:

    Kyuss. Anytime. Anywhere.

  41. xCOOCOOKALx says:

1994 – “30 Days of Roadkill” USA tour with Anal Cunt, Eyehategod, the Candy Snatchers, Sourvien and Buzzoven.

  42. pigchop says:

Rush – 1978 Hemispheres tour. New Year’s Eve, Maple Leaf Gardens, Toronto. Max Webster opened.

  43. fliP_ger says:

    - Slipknot with Static X and Mudvayne as support
    - Sodom with Sepultura as their support

  44. Sean says:

I’d go back farther and see Jimi Hendrix.

  45. MrC says:

Any Joy Division gig i think :)

Or present day, i guess it’d be Converge, Baroness and High on Fire i think it was. Damn me for living in England, never get combo’s like that :(

  46. Sanscard says:

Zeppelin Spring 1970 tour. They were raw and raucous on that tour and I’d love to have seen it live.

  47. Ben says:

Any tour that has carcass or At The Gates in it.

  48. Patton says:

    Clash of the Titans.

  49. How ’bout Voivod/Faith No More/Soundgarden? I think that was in 1989. As soon as they invent time travel, i’m going back to see that shit.

Props for giving Kings X some respect, BTW.

    • Marcel says:

I was thinking about the same tour.

And seconded on the props for King’s X. One of my favorite bands of all time.

  50. Russell says:

Smashing Pumpkins – Siamese Dream tour

  51. Ryan says:

Pantera with Sepultura and Prong in 1994

  52. The Rev'rend says:

Me and a friend were supposed to go see Pantera, Anthrax and Vision Of Disorder, but we were freshman and didn’t own cars. No one else was metal enough at our High School to want to go.

  53. SlickerDrip says:

North American Tour ‘79 – The Clash
North American Tour ‘75 – Led Zeppelin
    World Slavery – Iron Maiden
(What’s the Story) Morning Glory Tour – Oasis

Black Holes & Revelations Tour – Muse

    Clash of the Titans

  55. Alaskan King Crabcore says:

Miles Davis at the Plugged Nickel in 1965.

  56. Blashyrkh says:

Even though Trivium are now a pile of wank, I wanted to see them after ascendancy came out but I was just too young. And that’s when I decided to hate my parents LIKE ALL GOOD TEENS SHOULD.

    • Nemesis says:

I’m probably gonna get reamed out for this…but Shogun > Ascendancy

      • Timothy says:

+1 …and I agree with whoever said Mr. Bungle earlier. They’re one of the few bands I love but never got to see live

        • Beereded says:

+1 for Mr. Bungle. I’ve heard so much about their live show.

          • Beereded says:

Also, Metallica before Cliff died. I think it would also be pretty cool to see Metallica with Dave Mustaine as well. Death before Chuck died, Decapitated before Vitek died, Alice In Chains before Layne died, Pantera before they broke up, and Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble.

  57. braincake says:

    van halen’s fair warning tour.

    • Tim the enchanter says:

I saw them for the second album… and they were fucken WASTED.
DLR was very funny though. EVH kicked ass even though he was falling down drunk

  58. Greywhind says:

Hm… I’d go with either any Pantera tour from their good years, or maybe the Gojira + Lamb of God tour, or maybe one of Meshuggah’s tours… there are too many good tours I’ve missed to even pick ten.

  59. Gossamer Axe says:

    Death any tour.
    Cacophony w/Jason Becker
Motley Crue – Shout and/or Def Leppard – Pyromania
Iron Maiden – Killers But I did see the Powerslave tour which was great but I’m partial to Paul.

Glad I saw Stevie Ray Vaughan before he passed. Great show.

  60. Hammer_Smashed_Hurtt says:

    Pantera, Extreme Steel Tour.

    Live up every moment.

  61. Frank says:

My friend had a ticket for me to go see the Pantera/White Zombie tour when Great Southern Trendkill came out. I must’ve been 14 years old. I was all set to go when my mom heard on the news about religious protesters out there picketing white zombie, so she made me stay home. I often wonder how awesome it would’ve been to see both those bands…..

  62. Art Weingartner says:

The Slayer, Pantera, Fear Factory one…can’t remember the name of it.

  63. HeyCheckOutThisListYouCareNothingAbout says:

Seeing as how most of my favourite bands are defunct/past their prime I have a few shows in mind that I’d like to see. I have them arranged more or less in order.

    1. Dream Theater – Images & Words or Scenes From a Memory (but mainly shows before LaBrie’s vocal chord thing, so early Awake tour as well)
    2. Genesis – The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway or Selling England by the Pound
    3. Pink Floyd – Animals or The Wall
    4. Iron Maiden – World Slavery or Seventh Tour (or Donnington or Rock in Rio or Somewhere Back in Time or pretty much any tour with Dickinson or Di’Anno for that matter)
    5. Death – any tour Human or later (Symbolic preferred)
    6. Meshuggah, Cynic, and The Faceless this past year
    7. Dio – Last in Line
    8. Metallica – Damaged Justice (provided I could have my mind wiped of their more recent transgressions)
    9. Black Sabbath – Headless Cross or Born Again (the latter for the lolz)
    10. Atheist & Candlemass

    • Slaughterhouse says:

I seen Dream Theater in 2000 and they played Scenes From A Memory in its entirety….So fucking epic….and then they did another hour of other songs…one of the best shows I’ve been too!!!!!!!!

    • Gabe says:

yes anything by Pink Floyd but especially Animals!!!

meshuggah was alright (why wont they play “I ep”?!?!?!) but i hated myself for not knowing about The Faceless beforehand, would have enjoyed it soooooo much.

  64. Zoolamander says:

    Kings X. lol

  65. Gary Suarez says:

Rolling Stones at Altamont Speedway Free Festival.

Metallica before Cliff died… Primus after ‘Sailing The Seas Of Cheese’ was released… the Progressive Nation tour with Dream Theater and Opeth would have been pretty awesome.

  70. GW Gacy says:

I would go ALL THE WAY back to 2008 just to see the Progressive Nation Tour (AGAIN!)

    Between the Opetheater and Three!

    Amazing.

  71. Joe says:

( would want to see Metallica circa Ride the Lightning (I was born in 1987), or go and see Led Zeppelin back in the hay day.

  72. Timothy says:

ummmm… I can’t believe that no one thought of this yet, but how about any of the American Idol tours

  73. hibernum says:

1997 At the Gates Slaughter of the Soul tour with Dissection and Morbid Angel. Last time to see Dissection pre incarceration, and last time to see Morbid Angel with the classic David Vincent and Erik Rutan line-up, and of course ATG. Sure, ATG had a reunion tour. Sure, Evil D is back in Morbid Angel. But they were all in their prime before everything imploded.

  74. Tanner says:

Im a clueless fuck when it comes to past tours but here are the gods whom i woulda killed to have seen back in the day : Death. DEATH. DEATH! Decapitated with Vitek. Sepultura pre-’94 (you know, when they mattered) and Emperor.

  75. bluecat says:

strapping young lad, opeth, meshuggah in dallas a few years ago

  76. T says:

No one has mentioned Led Zeppelin…are you fucking kidding me?

    • T says:

      Ooops…didn’t see those

    • rattlehead says:

I read in the liner notes that Judas Priest opened for Zeppelin in the states after releasing their early classic Sad Wings of Destiny. Can’t decide if that would be the one to go back and see or Metallica with Mustaine or Burton. Sabbath before Ozzy became a caricature of himself would be nice too.

  77. uLy says:

Skinny Puppy- Last Rights tour. 1992

    • Tim the enchanter says:

      Hey!
      I saw that.
I also saw Puppy for Bites, Cleanse Fold, Vivisect, and Too Dark.
Living in Vancouver has had a few advantages….

  78. Mark Gavin says:

I wish I could go back and see NIN on the Light in the Sky tour AGAIN.

  79. Sammy says:

I’d go back to the Master of Puppets tour, sneak backstage and warn Cliff not to board any Scandinavian buses.

(To this day I’ve never seen a 30-minute-set opening act command an audience like that, and cause the crowd to thin for the main act – Ozzy.)

  80. CJ says:

Slipknot’s subliminal verses tour with Lamb Of God and Shadows Fall. I had the chance to go, and I didn’t, and I will regret it forever.

  81. Damaged Justice Tour, I would have killed to be there, but my parents had not met in 1989, so… not a chance… anyway, this was the last tour before Metallica slowly went downhill, the last chance to see them before they played Enter Sandman and Nothing Else Matters over and over again…

  82. Slipknot – Pledge of Allegiance Tour, again

  83. amaz0n says:

    Acid Bath.

  84. SourDeez says:

    -Anything involving Death
    -Anything involving Kyuss
-Megadeth when they were still on drugs
    -Maiden’s World Slavery tour
-The tour with Pantera, Annihilator, and Judas Priest

  85. swap-style says:

i was at the guns-metallica-faith no more show in minneapolis and the sound was horrible, but a good time anyway ( i slept through guns, i was a tired 8th grader what can i say) i also attended the pantera-white zombie-trouble show also in 1992 (first stage dive) but, i would have to say the metallica kill’em all for one tour with raven, or the blizzard of oz tour with metallica opening (because of the whole cliff dying thing) would have been pretty choice too.

  86. SlickerDrip says:

Sex Pistols at Winterland, Dethklok at Sumatra

  87. Malacoda says:

This is a hard one. Obviously, I’d have to say that I would love to see Death, seeing as Chuck died before I was even into metal. I’d also love to see Decapitated.

Some tours that I missed that, while they’re amazing, I still have a chance to see these bands (except Animosity):

    Nile/The Faceless/Unexpect
    Progressive Nation 2008
    Animosity/Job For a Cowboy/Hate Eternal/All Shall Perish

  88. THRASHETTE says:

Puppetz for sure. With Cliff Burton.

A Perfect Circle – Thirteenth Step tour
    Montrose – any tour

  90. R. Joseph Smith says:

The show I most regret not going to, and I don’t believe it’s mentioned above. The very first Down tour. WIth Corrosion Of Conformity, EyeHateGod,Crowbar and PANTERA….Fuck Biff Tannen in his gaping asshole.

  91. Steve L says:

“Spoonman” was never an album that Soundgarden released. That’s “Superunknown.”

    01. Rock and Roll
    02. Sick Again

    14. Black Dog
    15. Communication Breakdown

  94. Motoghost says:

I don’t know about exact tours, one in particular would be the Ozzy/ Metallica tour in ‘86. Other than that I would love to go back and see Joy Division in support of Unknown Pleasures. Would love to see the Cannibal Corpse/Cynic tour in 1993 I believe it was either 93 or 94, I was barely an infant. Death on their European tour in support of Human. Swans would be great to catch live, and for my last one Vio-Lence sometime after Eternal Nightmare came out.

  95. Facebook User says:

my pick without question would be the Metallica tour they did in Europe with Kyuss opening…what i wouldnt give to see Kyuss live

  96. FuckGiggaBlows says:

Guns and Metallica ‘92 tour, no question

  97. Jay-P says:

I’d go and see the man stevie “motherfuckin” ray vaughan if i could.

  98. Marc says:

Soundgarden touring in support of Badmotorfinger.

Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jeff Beck, just a few months before that damned helicopter crash. Couldn’t get a ride into town and still regret it.

  100. Definitely Led Zeppelin in ‘75, Maiden’s World Slavery tour, and Metallica w/ Cliff.

Being only 21, I missed out on a lot of awesome tours that happened before I was born/before I was old enough to go to shows my parents didn’t want to see, but of the tours I DO know about, I would go back and RE-visit the Gojira (touring behind Way of all Flesh) Machine Head( touring the Blackening) Trivium (touring the Crusade) and Lamb of God (sacrament) at Headliner’s in Toledo. That was, to this day, THE most awesome show I’ve seen. It was the same amount of high points as Ozzfest ‘07 but I didn’t have to stand around DTE from noon until midnight.
Aside from that, I’d love to have seen GWAR with Municipal Waste (touring Hazardous Mutation) in ‘06. I always have WAY too much fun at GWAR shows and then the next week just seems lame by comparison.
