NOISECREEP UNVEILS THEIR TOP TEN ALBUMS OF 2009

Picture 10Sing it with me now: It’s the most wonder-ful time of the year

Our pals at Noisecreep are the next ones up to unveil their favorite records of ’09. While it doesn’t look much like my own list, I will say that every album that made the cut is very good, and worthy of your consideration.

An interesting side note: I’ve seen Decibel’s list, too, and not only did their number one pick not make NC’s list at all, but NC’s number one pick is number seventeen on Decibel’s list. Is this going to be a year when there’s a lack of critical consensus – or does the gap just speak to the difference in tastes (and tones) of the respective staffs of each website/magazine? I guess we’ll need a few more media outlets to weigh to know for sure.

Check it out here, then come back and argue about it.

WHAT!? NO SLIPKNOT!?!!???!? Their limited edition golden special super ultimate re-re-re-release of their first album should be on any list. ANY!

    • atomicgarden

      fuck you.

  • msv81

“In no particular order” is a cop out and therefore totally bullshit. Noisecreep should rank those albums. Oh well. I’d say I agree with about half of those. Goatwhore’s “Carving Out The Eyes Of God” needs to be mentioned in any top ten. Swallow The Sun, Megadeth, and BTBAM will definitely not be making my list.

    • http://www.myspace.com/adeadissue Z?

I agree with the bands not making that list. I like Swallow The Sun, but Top 10? Nah. Goatwhore should be on that list.

  • no-ghost

Thats the beauty of music, Even within a genre of sorts within a community that thrives on music and certain styles the list is what you make it. Or I could just go “everyones list sucks compared to mine.”

  • Facebook User

AWWW CHYEAH HAHAHAH BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME COME OUT ONTOP

kudos to converge, mastodon, immortal, and behemoth

    awesome
    awesome

  • Facebook User

I wonder why these didnt make it. Any of these four are clearly more metal and far better than the new Alice and Chains.

    Skeletonwitch – Breathing The Fire
The Black Dahlia Murder – Deflorate
Clutch – Strange Cousins From The West
Goatwhore – Carving Out The Eyes of God

    • http://www.gravatar.com/avatar/46e389eb8b79606050d3d447431ff6ac?s=80 Nate

      BDM’s album was AMAZING.

      • Audi0phile

BDM and Skeletonwitch were off the fucking chain this year. Goatwhore’s release was pretty dope too.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Carlos-Ramirez/631635101 Carlos Ramirez

Just to be clear, we asked label people, musicians, writers, and other people in the industry for their favorite metal albums of the year. We then added up the results and put the list together from there. I think the biggest surprise for me when I was looking at the results was SWALLOW THE SUN.

    • Lybrium

I think the biggest surprise was MEGASHIT

  • Alkahest

BTBAM and Mastodon. Fair enough. Needs more Devin Townsend.

Also, Metalsucks Reader’s Choice poll. Make it happen, monkeys.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tom-Campagna/40702766 Tom Campagna

need to see some gates of slumber and anaal nathrakh up there as well. perhaps baroness as well

  • moyles

    fail for no deflorate.

    • Skanes

My favorite of the year, but you know no one is going to agree with us.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mark-Gavin/1396340262 Mark Gavin

I don’t think I could pick a top 10, but Baroness, Alice in Chains, and Megadeth would certainly have topped it.

  • Chimp-O-Neg

it’s all good. theyre all albums, and they were released this year. So – it’s accurate at least.

  • aznmetalchick

“Converge are one of the few bands that everyone from metalheads, to punks and hipsters can agree on.”?? They were totally booed at the Mastodon/Dethklok show I saw.
On another note, I think the Isis album should’ve made the list.

    • NECHTOVIKING

Isis shouldn’t make any lists. They are good but not list material.

    • Alkahest

Because Dethklok kiddies cant handle it.

      • NECHTOVIKING

        Everybody can handle Isis.

    • SonOF

Coverge were probably booed because (generalization coming…sorry) many people at that show were not exactly into a wide variety of heavy music. I know people that like Mastodon that like absolutely no other metal. I enjoy Mastodon myself, but they are pretty sounding, easy listening (especialyy Crack the Skye) compared to the chaotic aural mess that is Converge. And since Dethklok is essentially a joke band, I’m sure some of their “fans” aren’t exactly wordly metal heads either; they could just be into the show and the hilarity of it all. Essentially, and I know I have generalized a ton, but there is some truth to it, there were very likely a lot of fringe metal fans at that show because of the lineup, people that only dabble in the heavy stuff…and if you only dabble in the heavy stuff, it’s quite likely that Converge may sound like a noisy ear-destroying waste of time to you. That’s just my take on why an awesome band would be booed at a show. The other reason is because sometimes Converge really does sound “off” when they play live; as if a sound check would ruin their credibility, but that is a whole other issue.

      • Audi0phile

I was kinda stoked to hear converge live since I’ve wanted to give em a listen for some time, but man did they sound shitty that night. I’m gonna stream some later tonight (Immortal is going now) but that show left a very poor impression on my friends and I. In all fairness, their mix was pretty crappy, and it took the tech some time to get mastodon dialed in.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dru-Morrison/1641060092 Dru Morrison

Not a bad list. Pretty safe, but not bad. No Baroness or ISIS is pretty fucked though. And wassup with Sunn O))) not making it on any end of the year lists, at least from the metal rags. I mean, I’m not an incredible fan, but everyone was raving about that shit back in theday and then all of a sudden it’s forgotten by these metal mags. It’s probably going to pop up again when more general music mags get to their lists.

    • Biff Tannen

Because SUNN 0))) is FUCKING GARBAGE. its not even music, and its certainly not metal. It is garbage you hipster fuck.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dru-Morrison/1641060092 Dru Morrison

Holy fuck, this hipster bullshit comes out again. Anyone here from the Decibel forum? You all know what the fuck I’m talking about with this Brown Jenkins mother fucker. K, Biff, first, go fuck yourself. Second, learn to read, cause I said that I wasn’t a big fan of this band, though I will protect them when it comes to dismissive, dumb, conservative metal fucks who don’t know what the fuck their talking about unless it has to do with the Lamb of God line up or the recent updates on the fucking Suicide Silence album. Do yourself a favor and visit the Decibel forum, where real metal fans speak and not fucking metal beefheads that this website, unfortunately, has been attracting in the past months.

        • Santa Claus

Seriously Biff read the fucking post before you jump on the dumbfuck express.

  • Nemesis

People keep commenting for Deflorate to make the Top 10. It’s amazng o a technical level, but the song writing is just not up to par…it is so unmemorable, it will never make a Top 10.

And I have seen a few lists already, ranging from top 10 to top 40, and Chimaira gets snuffed every time. That should be duly noted somewhere!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Rob-Kurkjian/1238131077 Rob Kurkjian

list sucks Between The Buried and me should have been higher than 10 and wears World Painted Blood, that should have at least cracked the list at ten. Mastodon is too high on there too but than again i never really could get into that band.

6/10 on that list for sure

  • aud10ph1le44

I can see 9/10 of those albums being on a year end top ten. But Immortal? Really? I liked the album and feel it’s consistent with the rest of the catalogue, but there are a lot of albums I feel are more worthy than All Shall Fall.

Goatwhore’s “Carving Out the Eyes of God”?
    Black Dahlia Murder’s “Deflorate”?
    Vader’s “Necropolis”?

I mean, just in the past two or three months, Skeletonwitch, Nile, Baroness, The Red Chord, Marduk, Slayer, and The Devin Townsend Project have all unveiled stellar records that I feel are more worthy of consideration than Immortal’s latest.

    Just saying.

  • Sean Williams

What? That’s an awful list! Maybe two I think deserve to be on their, Mastodon, which would take 2nd best album for me, and Megadeth. Some of the others meh, but converge? They got booed at the Mastodon show I went to too. They were awful, I thought.
But they left out some of what I think were then best albums of the year, Isis, Russian Circles, Pelican, you had not one but TWO Devin Townsend albums for christ’s sake. And the all crowning achievement for best album of the year, the new Baroness, which didn’t even make the list! Sorry, awful list, at least for my tastes.

    • they call him ninja

Sorry man, but not Megadeth. That album was another in a line of just mediocre music from Mustaine and Co. There riffs where there but the songwriting was weak and overall, nothing was memorable.

  • MoonSnake

    Desperate Living.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Bishop/571220161 Mike Bishop

      1

  • NECHTOVIKING

    Swallow The Sun, cool.

I might have to check out Coalesce, can any one back me up on this?

    • Biff Tannen

      Don’t. Its fucking garbage.

      • NECHTOVIKING

I’ll take your word for it mate.

        • crank

I actually enjoy that album a lot.

    • charan

      YAYA ANOTHER sTs fan :D

    • Lybrium

I would just check it out for yourself, mate. It’s definitely not “Garbage.”

  • Biff Tannen

that list is filled with mainstream pop metal. Get outta the fucking walmart and SEARCH for real good records.

Since no one asked for it, here’s my list (in order) :

    1- Ignivomous : “Death Transmutation”
    2- Teitanblood : “Seven Challices”
3- Arghoslent/Martial Barrage: “Send Forth the Best Ye Breed” (just the Arghoslent side)
    4- Megadeth : “Endgame”
5- Katatonia : “Night is the new Day”
6- Embrace of Thorns: “Atonement Ritual”
    7- Katharsis : “Fourth Reich”
    8- Ares Kingdom: “Incendiary”
9- Metalucifer: ” Heavy metal Chainsaw”
    10- Slough Feg- “Ape Uprising”

    • NECHTOVIKING

      Katatonia is fucking king.

But then I laughed how you were bashing Wal-Mart Metal and you put Megadeth in your list.

      • crank

        ROFL

    • I’m not racist, but I hate Oceano

just because a band is popular doesn’t mean it’s bad. i could fill a list of 10 really good obscure bands that came out with records this year too, but the fact is even though I loved Infected’s new album or the new The Mod Flanders Conspiracy and even though I thought Oransi Pazuzu’s new album is the best psychedelic black metal album I’ve ever heard, Baroness’s Blue Record and Mastodon’s Crack the Skye are still way better. They have more experience, money, and options to craft what they think is their perfect album, and it shows. Shut the fuck up with your pretentious “pop metal”. I don’t know if you’ve ever heard the radio but the day I hear Converge side by side with Nickleback or Disturbed I’ll slice my balls off. It’s hard to become popular as a metal band, and only the best and most hardworking bands can do it.

      • Biff Tannen

In the realm of metal, almost all those bands on that list are ‘pop’. They all have distribution at major retail chains.
They also all have gay fucking beards and shitty colored tattoo sleeves with chinese symbols, fish and other estrogen markings, and not a SINGLE fucking goat or inverted cross in their album artwork.

Hipster shit, is what it is.

        • I’m not racist, but I hate Oceano

Oh I get it you’re a troll. It”s good to know that no one is that dense and shallow.

          • Biff Tannen

I noticed that you didn’t deny any of what I wrote?

          • jackattack

He’s not replying because doing so would be the equivalent of purposefully falling asleep because Freddy Kruger scares you… replying is exactly what you want so you can piss people off. Jump off a fucking cliff you piece of shit.

    • Alkahest

I cant find any of that list at my local Wal-Mart. Stop being so closed minded maybe?

      • Biff Tannen

you can’t find Mastodon or megadeth at wall mart? They are certainly in stock at every walmart/target/best buy/ etc that I’ve ever visited.

        • NECHTOVIKING

I doubt you ever leave your basement.

          • http://www.last.fm/user/markandrew78 materialist

            haha! gold..

    • Dysenteric

Well done for mentioning Ignivomous and Teitanblood, Biff. Killer releases.

  • Unkle Paul

I never see any love for Giant Squid ‘The Icthyologist’ you guys need to recognize….

    • Kazz

      +1.

That album is damn good. Reading the review of it is actually how I found this website.

  • West Virginia

    decent list minus converge

  • Unkle Paul

Nice list biff! Ignivomous lay waste to wal-mart garbage!

    • Biff Tannen

Thank you sir. Ignivomous are one of the best bands to come along in years ! Nocturnal Graves is another killer down under band. Australia has a hell of a scene right now.

      • Unkle Paul

You are certainly right sir. The scene in Aussie is blowing up. I really like Portal, I know people are hating on it, but they definetely push some boundaries. Last years Aeon of Horus was in my player for awhile as well. Be’Lakor’s new one also is spun on a daily basis

    • jackattack

So I’m listening to Ignivomous right now, for the first time. Definitely conjures up Death Metal’s early, gritty beginnings… but here’s the problem…. IT SUCKS COMPARED TO DEATH METAL THAT IS ON YEAR END LISTS LIKE NILE AND SUFFOCATION. I hear extremely little virtuosity in these guys’ music, it’s fucking loud but fucking boring. I will most definitely continue to listen to this band… but jesus…. to call this the best album of the fucking year? Just gtfo.

  • better than ezra

    Have they not HEARD ‘addicted’?

    • WowWee!

I guess they haven’t heard it

  • WowWee!

I’m suprised I didn’t see World Painted Blood or Lust in Space

  • charan

WOOHOO,finally Swallow the Sun are getting SOME rep atleast…still not the amount that they deserve though unfortunately

  • matty k

well…not an awful list, but I would submit the Chariot’s “wars and rumors of wars”, HORSE the band’s “desperate living” and also…as many have said BDM’s “deflorate”…

    love
    matt

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tom-Campagna/40702766 Tom Campagna

i hear Ki is much better than Addicted! this is the only site i have seen that really love Addicted! but i’ve not listened to either let me know what the deal is

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Joe-Rull/41500239 Joe Rull

I’d agree to that. Addicted! is good, but I really got into Ki a whole lot more.

      • they call him ninja

I agree competely. Addicted seems like something Townsend wanted to unleash out of his system after listening to AVB or DJ Tiesto. And that rendition of Hyperdrive didn’t help either. I love Anneke but on that song, she just didn’t work. Ki is definitely the muuuuuuch stronger album of the two.

    • Jugglemonkey

They’re both cool albums imo, Addicted is more of a ‘fun’ album, what you see is what you get. Ki has a lot more depth to it and has a really cool, laid back feel, but personally it depends what mood I’m in, as with all of DT’s music. Both are worth a listen, to be sure.

  • Biff Tannen

I’d like to see a top ten worst articles from this website list. I bet it would take months to narrow it down to ten.

    • jackattack

      Ziltoid’s prodigal son.

    • Dysenteric

I would volunteer for the role of narrowing it down, but I have a shite work ethic.

  • http://www.myspace.com/somethinglikesweet CJ

No Wrath or Deflorate or Metazoa :(

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michel-Giroux-Burroughs/574086565 Michel Giroux-Burroughs

Please, AIC is a fucking great band, but they are not metal.

And I can’t stand the new Megadeth album. I feel like it’s all recycled riffs and song ideas. You could transpose any of those songs to UA or System Has Failed and it would fit right in. It’s nothing new.

  • HokiePokie

Oh god, BTAM’s new album is on that list? They have some pretty awesome song introductions for sure, but then it all goes downhill in bland. It’s not the worst, but I wouldn’t say it’s even close to the top 10 of 2009.

Katatonia should have been on that list, I may not listen to many Metal bands, but I’m pretty sure Katatonia should be one of the top bands on there. How they write their music is beyond me, the vocals are pure fucking sex.

Meh, I don’t see the point of making a 2009 list when 2009 ain’t done yet.

  • Matt Pike’s lost shirt

Come on, no love for Kylesa or Bison B.C.? I’m surprised no one’s mentioned those bands yet. Also, did everyone forget about Obscura? Personally, I’d also include Municipal Waste’s Massive Agressive, but that’s just me . . .

  • venice is almost all pee

i didnt forget about obscura, i think cosmogenesis should make any top 10 list, metal or otherwise

  • Lybrium

I give it an official score of “Shitlist”

My opinion (which, by the way; is much more important than yours!) is that they were missing these:

The Devin Townsend Project – Addicted
    Hacride – Lazarus
Pelican – What We All Come To Need
The Devin Townsend Project – Ki
    Lamb Of God – Wrath
Katatonia – Night Is The New Day
    Kylesa – Static Tensions
He Is Legend – It Hates You
    Karnivool – Sound Awake
    ISIS – Wavering Radiant

But who gives a flying fuck, really; like HokiePokie said, “2009 ain’t done yet.”

  • mike

Augury’s Fragnetary Evidence and Be’lakor’s – Stone’s Reach (#1 at Metal Storm) are two albums that should be mandatory on everyone’s top 10 list.

    • mike

      Fragmentary Evidence*

    • Gaia

I saw Stone’s Reach as no.1 on Metal Storm. It shouldn’t be. Listened to it. Completely forgettable.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Brandon-Forde/666126214 Brandon Forde

Where the fuck is Breathing the fire and Deflorate?

  • Connor

Wrath fucking blew. BLEW. I don’t care what anyone says.

    • http://www.myspace.com/somethinglikesweet CJ

      Fail.

    • they call him ninja

Didn’t blow, just more of the same from LOG. Redundant stuff.

      • Santa Claus

        Wrath was so not good.

  • http://www.myspace.com/somethinglikesweet CJ

Portals should probably be in there somewhere also.

  • Soontohavesyphilis

I am glad that Swallow the Sun was on there. They don’t get enough love.

  • http://www.kingdomofnoise.blogspot.com MetalMatt

    pretty decent list. But…

    Megadeth over Slayer?

I didn’t hear the BTBAM or Swallow the Sun so I can’t say anything on them.

AIC, Converge, Behemoth, Suffocation and Mastodon will be strong contenders on my list.

  • Marc

Axe To Fall is surely one of the best albums this year. and the people who vehemently hate on Converge will become fans or at least appreciate what they do eventually. it almost always happens for some reason.

  • Erik

Where is Slayer? Heaven & Hell? Volbeat?

  • jackattack

HELLO EVERYONE. WHERE THE FUCK IS NILE!?!?!?!

    • jackattack

and The Red Chord for that matter.

  • Dysenteric

I’ve yet to draw up my top 10. The Teitanblood will be in it, definitely. And it will be in no particular order, I’m not a fan of “here’s why #1 is better than all the others” et al.

I also have to write up my “best albums of the decade” list an’ all. What work.
