TOM MORELLO AND THE METALLICATS WEIGH-IN ON THE BEST SONGS AND ALBUMS OF THE DECADE

The good thing about being Rolling Stone is that even though you haven’t been relevant in twenty years, there’s some prestige attached to your name, so you can get famous people whose publicists don’t know any better to do shit for you. The glorified glossy toilet paper’s latest coup is getting a bunch of celebs to list their favorite albums and songs of the decade.

I imagine this will cause a million times more arguing than the lists published by any magazine or website staff, because if frail egos collapse under the weight of differing opinions from writers and other “experts,” than I can only imagine how people will react to finding out that Kirk Hammett likes Sinéad O’Connor more than Meshuggah.

Check out some of the lists from Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Tom Morello after the jump.

  • Mike says:

Not surprising that Tom Morello’s lists are utter garbage. Glad to see the Metallica guys include some great albums like “Crack the Skye,” “Black Gives Way To Blue” and “The Blackening.”

    • Daddy's Little Fartbox says:

I’m not sure what to make of someone who calls the likes of Johnny Cash and Steve Earle “garbage.”

  • TJ says:

I like that Morello put his own record in the top 25 best albums.

    Way to be modest.

  • Bobby Tims says:

i like tom’s song list, funny he put renegades of funk. also really happy “when the man comes around” was in there.

  • Jackson says:

I’m actually surprised how good Kirk’s list is I expected all of them to be complete shit

  • Dan-O says:

Kirk’s list owns the others. I’ve heard the Metallica guys talk about Mastodon before, but the All Shall Perish nod surprised the hell out of me! Also, I have lost an immense amount of respect for Tom Morello now, the dude simply picked some shitty, shitty songs/albums. And as TJ said previously, nice job being modest Tom.

    • DidgeryDo says:

You know I think being deathcore distracts people from some really solid qualities in All Shall Perish.
Also they need to work on the lyrics more then anything because they are really bad. Other
then that Awaken the Dreamers is a great effort.

      • Nate L. says:

Agree. I was glad to see this. And yes, I feel that Eddie’s performance on ATD was not up to the high par set by POE…

    • Mike says:

Actually he didn’t pick some shitty shitty albums he picked some pretty good not metal albums. There is a difference.

      • RockOutWithMy...YouKnow says:

I know Metallica respects the hell out of Mastodon. My cousin’s girlfriend’s friend(s mother’s sister’s former roommate) did merch for Dethklok on their tour and said Metallica came to hang out with Mastodon at both shows. She missed them the first night because she went to my cousin’s place instead, and was some sort of mad about missing hanging with Metallica.
And she also got my Crack the Skye vinyl signed by everyone in the band, so that’s kinda cool.
OK, I’m done talking about how cool I am, yeah… that’s it

    • Geekbeater says:

DUDE ALL SHALL PERISH!!!!! Thats fucking awesome for them! I wonder what the Metallica crowd would do if ASP opened for them! That made my day seeing his list

  • Well that was no more or less horrible than I expected.

  • justin says:

here’s the rolling stone list: http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/31248017/100_best_albums_of_the_decade/1

there are only about 10/100 albums on their list i agree with or would even consider for a top 100. most of it is garbage.

  • DidgeryDo says:

Both lists were really good IMO. I especially like how Lars got into Gojira, maybe from touring with them.

  • KIRK KNOWS HIS SHIT

TOOL, LAMB OF GOD, AND MOST OF ALL, HE STILL THINKS ALL SHALL PERISH IS AN AWESOME BAND
    ALL SHALL PERISH
if i was chris storey, i’d be shitting myself right now hahahahaha too bad he quit the band hahahahaha

fucking right, im really happy to see kirks list is full of great picks. awesome.

  • Frampler says:

What these lists convey to me is that the Metallica guys listen to the type of mainstream rock/pop produced by people as famous and rich as they are. It’s incredibly myopic, and the few metal bands that are there – All Shall Perish excepted – have all toured with Metallica during recent years. For guys who came from an underground metal scene, you think they would retain an interest in what’s shit-hot in metal, but apparently not.

And Lars, Oasis? They were fucking terrible in the 1990s when they were producing the anthemic albums that made them huge, they were even worse during this decade. Good riddance to a bunch of gobshite Manc twats.

  • msv81 says:

Can’t believe “Iowa” ended up on Tom’s list.

  • dot says:

i usually don’t give a shit about what the famous guys listen to since that’s their own preference, but lars’ pick of picking pink for his list is just wack. and that’s when pink threw out her blackness and became white trash. not that she was any good being either, just saying.

kirk’s list is the most stoner friendly of them all. +1 for including damian marley.

but all shall perish? shit i got tired of hearing their songs even before i got into them.

  • The Roan says:

toms pick of william elliot whitmore is equally as awesome as it is suprising.

  • Jedsan says:

I can’t get over the fact Kirk Hammet listens to All Shall Perish.
    That’s hilarious.

  • Chimp-O-Neg says:

Lars’s list is terrible! Ha ha! You couldnt get any more middle of the road.

  • DeathMasqueRed says:

Kirk’s lists are by far the best. However, I have to give Lars credit for choosing Zwan’s cover of “The Number of the Beast” for one of the best songs of the decade. Not only is it a great, albeit odd cover of the song, but it’s also relatively unknown since it was a b-side of a single that no one cared about.

  • SchenkelTown says:

it’s funny to me that people think because a guy is in a metal or hard rock band that he should have all metal and hard rock albums/songs in the list.

when you’re on tour and around metal all day every day, it’s not something you really want to listen to when you are just hangin’ out

  • meow says:

I’m glad The Mars Volta are being appreciated as they are the best band of the decade. If you disagree, you are wrong.

  • SHOCKTROOP says:

lars is sooooooooooooooo fucking ghey it is painful.

  • Alex_P says:

Wow, Lars Ulrich has shitty taste. I do like most of Kirk Hammet’s picks, though, at least on the albums. I do like Damien Marley, and Kid A is one of my favourite albums of all time. I question the Kid Rock, but whatevs.

  • You know, the only thing on that whole list that really surprised me… was Lars smacking Green Day on there. Not to say their tastes aren’t a bit diverse (yes, Kirk’s list is win, but Kirk’s the only one left in ‘tallica that anyone really respects anyway… Who else can say “Yeah, that whole ‘wah’ sound? I use it because I love it. If you don’t love it, shut up.”) but despite junk like Chinese Democracy, where does anyone get off saying that Green Day put out one of the best albums of the decade.. they joined the whiney-rock hype like everyone else did. Jeez, Lars. It’s their Black Album XD

  • I killed a Dunky says:

Dudes what I like about this list is that they were completely honest in what they believe are good albums.. we can see that all of them have been listening to Indie Music and Hip Hop, which is good, I dig the fact that they choosed bands as RadioHead and ArTic Monkeys as their favs cause each one of those bands have gone to the extreme improving their sound on each album, love it or hate it this lists are showing us one thing: The Indie movement has grown big over the past years because they are not following any trend.. they just doin whatever the fuck they want musically and lirically. Just my 2 quarters, save me a beer

  • change says:

I very much appreciate ( ) by Sigur Ros being on Kirk’s list. What a masterpiece.

  • Benito says:

Hammet’s lists are pretty damn good IMO. Sigur Ros, TMV, ATDI, Gojira, SOAD, Tool. fuck yes.

Morello almost lost me until I saw that he had the balls to includes “doves – losts souls” on his list. those guys are fucking genius.

  • Scott Travis says:

What about franz ferdinand, 3 doors down, AFI, foo fighters and all american rejects??? These bands maked awesome songs of this decade, and they became classic, like Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand or Kryptonite by 3 doors down.

  • bobovdeath says:

anyone who lists anything by Staind should be shot

  • Captain Blacklung says:

Of course Lars put “Get the Party Started” by Pink on his list. It was clearly the song that provided the largest influence on his drumming for Death Magnetic.

    • Captain Blacklung says:

And the fact that he clearly must think that Redneck is the best LoG ever made shows that he only plays in Metallica because the position of drummer in the Danish alternative polka group “TolkaPoka” was taken.

  • JayP says:

good to see kid a up there in the lists. certainly the best album of the decade to trip to.

  • chris says:

MOTHERFUCKING MARS VOLTAAAAAAA BITCHES!!!!!!!!! Volta = the greatest band to ever grace this planet. fuck all of you haters, you don’t know what music is. hahahahaha, cue stupid purist metalhead comments about tight pants and high pitched vocals now.

    • Natsquatch says:

It’s pretty common for people into metal to like The Mars Volta, dumbass. It’s also common to dislike them for reasons other than the listener being a purist metalhead. Personally, I like them, but I have to be in the mood, and that isn’t very often.

  • verbal space says:

i subscribe to RS for reasons completely unrelated to music. their music reviews (and their general music writing) blow turds and because peter travers is the greatest movie critic (imo). they like to focus articles on awesome people like pink.

  • Dr schwine-hoot says:

Smashface- get ready for their debut… Chris Storey is gonna shred till he’s dead

  • stew says:

i think its funny tom put his own album on his list. and afroman made me laugh.

  • Mark Gavin says:

As much as I make fun of Kirk, the guy’s got pretty damn good tastes. He might be right on with Kid A. That’s a damn good album if I’ve ever heard one.

  • matt says:

awesome that kirk hammet likes damian marley

  • d00shc00gr says:

wow lars is into some laaaaaame music

  • jantje says:

Both Lars and Kirk mention Kid Rock EPIC FAIL!

  • o0Stacey0o says:

Lars really has a thing for Eminem. Like, in a weird way, me thinks. God that guy sucks. Well, BOTH those guys suck. Weak lists.

  • idbattle says:

Afroman ! Haha. i used to go see that dude in college….because i got high, because i got high, because i got high.

  • Anthony says:

Something about Kirk selecting “American Bad Ass” by Kid Rock seems fishy. I’m sure the fact that American Bad Ass uses the riff to Sad but True has something to do with it.

  • rachel says:

I think for everyone that calls these shitty lists should remember something: These guys don’t have oodles of time to scour the internet looking for lots of underground or overseas metal. They are either A) Writing their own music (Whether you think they write shitty music or not is not the point.), or they are B) Playing their music in concert on extensive tours. On top of that, they are trying to live the closest thing to “normal” lives as possible. It is apparent some of their music they listen to comes from the radio. As ridiculous as this sounds, one should think of all the places we may hear the radio: In the car, in the grocery store, in the dentist’s office, at a restaurant, etc. If they catch wind of non-radio group, they may look it up (All Shall Perish) and like it.

  • TooOld says:

Really? Are you fucking kidding me? First of all, RS is quite possibly the shittiest publication in the history of time. Not only are the musical reviews crafted by corporate monkeys with an IQ equivalent to my morning shit. Secondly, their incessant and mindless licking of any liberal politician has completely ruined their credibility/objectivity. Lastly, they posted a cover of the corporate queers Jonas. I fucking hate this magazine. Please don’t ever, ever reference it again.

On another note, I don’t give a fuck what TM, Lars or any other fucker’s musical tastes are. I will make up my own mind thank you very much.

    • Dirtman73 says:

Did you seriously just bring politics into this discussion? Despite the fact that 99% of the people on this site are aware that RS reports with a liberal bent, you felt the need to get attention by crying like a little bitch. You’re quite the douchenozzle aren’t you?

Go back to redstate.com and whine about the commie alien lizardmen invading your outhouse again.

  • otro says:

kirk’s list kick ass, I didn’t know he was a stoner lol now I like him more, “because i got high” is hilarious xD

  • Love those lists, Sigur Ros, Johnny Cash, Gojira, Mastodon, Radiohead, Muse, Arcade Fire… pure WIN

    • If I have to pick one Sigur Ros song it would be definitely Sæglópur. I also think it’s funny that Lars likes Arctic Monkeys and the Last Shadow Puppets, I love those bands but I don’t know it’s weird that he enjoys that type of music.

  • Andrew says:

I was glad to see Radiohead, The Mars Volta, Mastodon, System of a Down, Muse, and Tool on there.

    But Wolfmother? Seriously….

  • Devon Czekaj says:

I don’t get why they love The Sword so much. They are a third rate stoner rock band.

  • Olinville says:

These lists illustrate why Metallica and Tom Morello’s new project (whatever the fucking name is) BLOW. I thought Metallica still claimed to be a fucking metal band? U2? Really? The only band on the planet with a bigger douche bag than Lars.

  • EROL says:

It is interesting. Lars is my least favourite Metallica member. But his both lists are 99% identical to mine.

  • Blakkstorm says:

Crack the skye IS the best album of the decade, so fuck you.

  • Blakkstorm says:

Crack the Skye IS the best album of this decade, no other pop or electronic album sounds nearly as full of life, and no metal album sounds as big and epic. And no rock album this decade sounds nearly as catchy or free spirited as Mastodon can do. Devin Townsend is even challenged by the emotional range of this masterpiece.

  • Rick Webb says:

And people wonder why Metallica’s albums suck more and more with every putrid release.
