IWRESTLEDTHEDILLINGERESCAPEPLANONCE

Here’s a scenario about which I often wonder. Let’s say there’s a fan. And said fan thinks that Artist A is a capital-”G” Genius, and Artist B represents everything that’s wrong with the world. The fan screams this opinion to anyone who listen, and maybe even goes so far as to make it an intelligence issue – e.g., “Only a moron could ever like Artist B.” Now… how does reconcile this conflict when Artist A in someway associates himself with Artist B? We’ve seen that on this very site – everyone’s favorite MS reader, Ziltoid, has made endlessly disparaging marks about certain artists, and insisted only ree-rees like those artists, but then his hero, Devin Townsend, has praised some of those same artists. So does Ziltoid therefore think that Devin is a pea-brained man child, or does he shrug and say “Well, there’s room for gray area?”

I raise the issue because, according to The PRP, The Dillinger Escape Plan will tour this year with Iwrestledabearonce. That’s a great tour, if you ask me, but I know that a lot DEP fans think that that band is the second coming and the IWABO kids are the collective Antichrist. Of course, someone will say “Well, DEP have little to no control over which bands they tour with,” except that a) it’s my understanding that that’s not really true and b) DEP guitarist Ben Weinman has already worked with IWABO once before, on a remix for the iTunes version of their album, It’s All Happening. So clearly the guy doesn’t mind rubbing shoulders with these kids who are supposed to spell the end of good metal music as we know it.

I’m not looking for DEP to validate my opinion that IWABO are a good band. That would be ridiculous. But the announcement of this tour did me get thinking about the problems with making blanket statements like “Only assholes enjoy such and such a band.” And, yes, I’m fully aware I’ve made statements like that before. But I know good, smart people who enjoy or have enjoyed Limp Bizkit and ICP, and I know good, smart people who don’t see what the big deal is about Pig Destroyer, and while I do question these friends’ sanity, I’m not about to stop being friends with them just we disagree about whether or not Fred Durst is Adolf Hitler reincarnate.

So. DEP and IWABO. Two very forward-thinking bands, part of a package that makes perfect sense to me. I’m stoked for this one. There’s only two confirmed dates so far, but you can get those after jump.

March 12th Worcester, MA – The Palladium (feat. Darkest Hour)

  • Bicro

    Darkest Hour is pretty cool.

    • Brian \m/(-_-)\m/

      +1 love those guys

  • Matt

oh my GOD i need to get my band on any georgia date that might spring up.

  • Douchebag

Everyone knows that Ziltoid IS Devin Townsend.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tom-Campagna/40702766 Tom Campagna

i don’t think Devin Townsend is a Mets fan so therefore Ziltoid is a separate entity entirely. see zilty’s comments here http://www.metalsucks.net/2009/10/26/phillies-or-yankees-two-plane-crashes-or-a-swine-flu-epidemic-please/

      • Douchebag

Well yeah, he says exactly the opposite of what Devin Townsend would actually say, which makes it even more obvious that it IS the actual Devin Townsend.

      • Ziltoid

        Wow, nice memory.

    • Rachel

But Devin Townsend is God, and God is kinda hard to imitate.

      • holmes

Really? Because I thought the new Townsend album was one of the most awful things I’ve ever heard…

        • Rachel

I certainly didn’t think so. Ih-Ah! may sound like something straight from Taylor Swift, but it’still a great album. Infinity is by far my personal favorite.

    • metalguy

When it was announced that he was going to be on the site, i commented about what hed think of ziltoid. he (using a different name) said he and ziltoid definetly dont see eye to eye(pretty much an exact quote)
      BUT
Devin is bipolar so zilty could just be his inner dick. This seems like the “is there really an andrew wk conspiracy” situation

      • Ziltoid

Haha, you wasted a comment on asking him what he thought of me? He definitely seems like the kind of person who would be more open-minded about certain things than I would be, but based on his own musical output (and the awesomeness of it), his standards are obviously just as high, if not higher.

      • Ziltoid

^If that is what you are referencing, and there is no proof as to whether that is Devin or not. It might be, or it might not. The name “g” really doesn’t indicate much.

    • Ziltoid

Haha, people think I’m Devin Townsend. This is interesting to say the least, but alas, I am not. I live in New York, anyway.

      • DustintheWind

Zitty, i’ve never really gotten into Townsend or SYL, not because i dont like it, just because i was never exposed to it.. But i really really liked Kingdom (the song posted on here a couple weeks ago). If i could only get one or two albums what do you suggest? BTW, i do enjoy both of the afforementioned bands and i will be at the LA show, wooooooooooooooooo

        • Ziltoid

Well, if you like Kingdom, then logically, you should try Physicist. Ziltoid and Addicted are probably most similar to Physicist.

My general order for listening to Devy’s records is this, though:

          Ocean Machine: Biomech
          Infinity
          Accelerated evolution
          Addicted
          Terria
          Ziltoid
          Physicist
          Synchestra

Ki is such an anomaly that you can just listen to it any time. It’s really different from everything else, but it’s also great.

As for SYL, here is my order:

          Alien
          City
          The New Black
          SYL
Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing

If you like the first three, then go for the rest.

  • orbital

Animals as Leaders is the only good band on this.

  • B-dizzle

Ben Weiman also worked with Bring me the Horizon, check, Metalsucks, your move >: |

    • http://www.myspace.com/thestarsthrewdowntheirspears Tim

And let’s not forget Little Wayne.

Way to not mention that Animals As Leaders are on the tour, by the way.

  • John

First a Peta ad, now this?

At least sawtooth grin is back together.

  • blah

metalsucks acknowledging the existence of the prp

    hell has frozen over

  • datrick

fuck yeah! i’ll be at the pontiac show for sure.

    • http://reigninblonde.com Angela Gossowski

I’m shocked! Out of all the tours that have left us out the past year, this totally bitchin’ one is coming through within the first 2 dates. I’m shocked. Then again, it is on April Fool’s Day, so its probably just a big fucking joke.

  • I’m not racst, but I hate Oceano

I love both bands, although I though IWABO’s debut was a bit of a let down.

  • http://www.myspace.com/pacifistmusic PACIFIST

so fucking stoked about this shit! 2 of our fav. bands!

    <33333333

  • Cool-White-Guy-Name

Personally, I’ve seen DEP on stage and I must say that I hate this music. If I wrestled a bear plays the same type shit, then they suck too. Metal music must have groove. Did Dimebag Darrel teach us nothing? WTF?

    • Michiel

Why must metal music have groove?

      • Isaac

So it can be accessible to those with a lack of diversity in their taste.

Not all music has to be Pantera or early Machine Head, but apparently some people think that.

And Dimebag taught me how to inspire a bunch of shitty nu-metal bands. I don’t like Pantera much. :p

        • http://www.myspace.com/pacifistmusic PACIFIST

          i agree! 100% :)

        • Michiel

Well, I’m a huge Pantera fan, but ‘metal music must have groove’? I was hoping he’d come up with something intelligent to back that up, hehe.

    • http://www.heavyblogisheavy.com/ Alkahest

      Dimebag died. Get over it.

  • SourDeez

I had to deal with this dilemma when HORSE the Band took IWABO on tour with them. I thought it would be horrendous, but honestly IWABO isn’t that bad if you’re shitfaced.

  • Hammer_Smashed_Hurtt

Cant speak for DEP (We know MS, you’re swingin proudly from their nuts) But ive seen IWABO live and they kill. Great show great tunes.

Good music is good music, this topic has been beat to death. You shouldnt NOT like a band or not give them the time of day just because its not in the same vein or comfort zone of what you normally like. Give a few tracks a whirl, if you hate it dont listen to it. If its good rock it the fuck out.

And stop name dropping Ziltoid like he’s prophetic.

    • Ziltoid

All hail my prophetic wisdom, for I am the omniscient one.

      • Rachel

So I guess seeing all means that you can’t like all. Hmm….

        • Ziltoid

Can anyone like all? I think not.

          • Hammer_Smashed_Hurtt

            I love you Ziltoid.

  • Seb

We all know that if you tried to wrestle DEP, Greg would fucking beat your ass into the ground.

  • msv81

No no, this tour makes perfect sense. Band A is overrated noise pollution and Band B is complete and utter shit. Why wouldn’t they tour together? A perfect match.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Gabsung-Lim/568375471 Gabsung Lim

i wrestled Greg once… would be a much more daring band name.

  • I, Monarch

motherFUCKER!!! What the FUCK? Seriously? I may seriously consider not going to this tour if one more shitty band gets thrown on this tour. At least if it continues to the West coast.

  • http://www.myspace.com/1033metal Jackson

I’d be really excited but I have a feeling it will skip MN like the majority of tours

  • Dysenteric

Big fucking deal. Not keen on DEP, hate IWABO.

And Ziltoid, like me and everyone under a name that doesn’t match what’s on their passport, is just some anonymous person who comments about bands and stories on music blogs and forums, the only thing that makes Ziltoid special is that he ran Metalsucks for a day last year. He’s a Z-list Internet celebrity at best. (No offense, Ziltoid.)

    • Ziltoid

None taken. I think anonymity is one of the more interesting aspects of the internet.

      • Hammer_Smashed_Hurtt

Actually all it does is Front cowards and promote Fake toughness

        That and GREAT porn

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Harrington-Neil-Sauer/677600672 Harrington Neil Sauer

    A) there’s no such thing as an intelligent person who doesn’t like Pig Destroyer
    B) IWABO takes loads of cum in their ass

    • Kill All

“A) there’s no such thing as an intelligent person who doesn’t like Pig Destroyer”

      +1

  • change

I don’t hate IWABO, but I’m definitely not a fan. That being said, I’m already seeing Dillinger 3 times this summer, but once more can’t hurt. FTW

  • Isaac

Christmonkeys, I am SO going to this if it comes to Chicago. I love both of em.

  • http://www.gravatar.com/avatar/46e389eb8b79606050d3d447431ff6ac?s=80 Nate

Why do you continue to attempt to make an example of Ziltoid, Axl? Is it because he stomps your ass all over the place?

  • Jo

D.E.P, I.W.A.B.O, Animal as Leaders, Darkest hour(I hope they are on the rest of the tour) is worth the 25-35 dollars they are gonna charge at the door. 2010 is turning out to be an awesome year for tours

  • Andy Synn

    I’m actually Devin Townsend.

    It’s my dark secret.

  • Ziltoid

We’ve seen that on this very site – everyone’s favorite MS reader, Ziltoid, has made endlessly disparaging marks about certain artists, and insisted only ree-rees like those artists, but then his hero, Devin Townsend, has praised some of those same artists. So does Ziltoid therefore think that Devin is a pea-brained man child, or does he shrug and say “Well, there’s room for gray area?”

The difference is that “ree-rees” tend to like only the shitty artists. If you like one generic, unoriginal metalcore band, chances are that you’ll like a plethora of those disgusting excuses for music. But on Devin’s list, the only bands I outright hate are Behemoth and Gojira, and even with those there, he also effectively cancels them out with great stuff like Godflesh, Venom, Neurosis, Judas Priest, Morbid Angel, et cetera. He doesn’t binge on one style of metal, but has a very broad taste in the genre (as well as stuff outside of metal), and that warrants respect.

    • Sandy n Papo

it is ok or normal if you dont like Gojira, but why hate them?

      • Ziltoid

Emotionless music that just chugs on endlessly with no real point is more boring than Sunn O))). Even when Gojira has a good riff or two (“Esoteric Surgery” is my favorite example of this), they repeat themselves so much throughout their songs that the initially good ideas just seem pointless and boring.

        • b-rad

which is the exact same problem with Meshugga but for some reason, people actually like them and call them “amazing”

          • Ziltoid

No, Meshuggah’s chugging is very purposeful and well written. The repetition doesn’t make the riffs bland, but rather reinforces them (and the rest of the rhythm section) as the main theme and foundation of the song. They have a talent for writing songs that Gojira will never have.

        • Sandy n Papo

well, I do respect your opinion, but “From Mars to Sirus” is such an emotional album, the lyrics of Flying Whales, to give an example, makes a perfect mix with the music, that can be all but emotionless…I wonder what is your opinion about Textures

          • Ziltoid

The band? Awful. Just another -core band trying to emulate Meshuggah’s style and failing miserably.

The Cynic song? Awesome. One of the highlights of Focus.

  • realitytwist

    pig destroyer ftw!!!

  • lonleyzombie

I like IWABO, there EP was pretty immature, but i think they’re headed in the right direction. Plus they have some crazy riffs (crazy not technical). Very fun band, not to be taken too seriously. I disagree that they are generic sounding. Their vocalist has a unique sound, they have really odd crazy riffs (lots of super high notes and slides) and they touch on a lot of genres (usually very briefly) in a Mr. Bungle’s self titled CD kind of way. Plus that gurl kin sang!

  • b-rad

    absolutely amazing tour!!!

  • Xenochrist

Finally a tour thats coming to Mi. And close to me too. Totally going

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Zach-Gates/14209777 Zach Gates

I like both of these bands.

I’m also a massive Pig Destroyer fan who likes the first two Limp Bizkit albums.

    Figure THAT out.

  • The Ghost of D. Boon

I’m not gonna bitch and whine about a band’s choice in touring partners because only gay-wads like [band B] but to be honest I really like going to shows early and getting to see 2 or 3 or 4 sets of music that I really dig, instead of 1, so it’s always a bit disappointing when a line-up features a band I don’t like.

And it’s even worse when the one band I don’t like is playing in the middle of two good bands, like with the LoG/Devildriver/Shadows Fall tour last year
