ANOTHER EXCELLENT UNSIGNED BAND: DIAMOND PLATE

Thursday, January 28th, 2010 at 10:00am by

The reader known as “culturevulture” e-mailed us to tell us he just this band Diamond Plate open for Behemoth – and apparently they killed.

I believe it. Bassist/singer Jon Macak’s choked vocals take some getting used to, but the music won me over right away. This is thrash that never sacrifices complexity for simple speed; it’s bludgeoning without being dumb. I’d wager that Justice-era Metallica has been a big influence on this band, and that they love Machine Head’s The Blackening; I think they’d seem perfectly at home on a tour with Revocation, even if they’re not quite yet at that band’s level of kick-assery.

Check out Diamond Plate on MySpace; I was especially impressed with the song “Relativity.”

Everyone must check out this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yrVnk7Ao4s

These guys not only slay, they slay at pre-drinking ages. I’m not totally sure, but I’m pretty sure they’re all 19 or younger in the video above.

My cousin turned me on to them after seeing them open for neo-thrash bands Havok and Hatchet… both of whom are also fantastic.

Why do all of the bands Frank manages have horrible names? Remember Flathead Fillips? Dudes can rock, but without a good vocalist, they’re going nowhere.

One other band you need to check out that opened that show too is KOMMANDANT. They played right after Diamond Plate did. Fuckin brutal band! Here’s the link:

I’ve seen these guys quite a few times, and every time they’ve kicked some serious ass. Most recently with Behemoth, assuming the same show as culturevulture. They are playing with DRI shortly and they also opened on the Gojira/Burst tour as well when they came through Chicago. I’m very curious to see what these guys are capable of if signed, bit different than the typical thrash bands around now but not too different. Its quite refreshing. Also the members are quite awesome as well

    Good band, but horrible vocals.

Some people said that about Revocation when they only had the EP out. So some people are dumb. You might be one of them.

looks like they stole their name from the line 6 pod.

Lol, wow, after e-mailed you guys that shit ages ago?

I live in the same area as Diamond Plate and have had the pleasure of seeing them live several times. They always put on a great and are a very talented group. Its nice to see local talent getting recognition like this.

i dig these guys. Constantly see them at shows here in Chicago hanging out (even if they aren’t playing). I’ve seen them a few times, they bring an energetic live show. As for the Machine Head comment.. from what I know, that’s hardly the case.

Currently I think most of the members are around 16-17. My friend told me that last March when they opened for Destruction, the guitarist was just getting his drivers permit. They put on a good show every time.

The vocalist doesn’t suck. I looked at that live clip…and he(the bassist) has a great thrash voice. I think the mixing for their EP is what botched it.

The music was great, until the vocals kicked in. It sounds like a constant state of “surprise drunk buttsex” voice.

  • dude

vocals were recorded when he was 16. and over a year ago. check it out live and on their next recording and youll change your mind about the vocals

Seriously, Vocal is quite odd and mismatch with the superb music.
