PROG ORGASM RUMOR OF THE DAY: IRON MAIDEN, DREAM THEATER + COHEED & CAMBRIA SUMMER TOUR?

Thursday, March 4th, 2010 at 3:00pm by

iron maiden dream theater coheed and cambriaBefore I start: this is all pure speculation and none of these bands have confirmed or even commented on anything.

Now, let’s dig in.

Seems there are some rumors a brewin’ about a possible Iron Maiden summer tour with Dream Theater and Coheed & Cambria in support. Here’s the approximate timeline of events unfolding that have led to this speculation, as provided by Suckalo Tzvi Cederbaum:

  1. Yesterday, Mike Portnoy tweeted the standard “Big DT announcement coming up” cocktease. He also posted it on his forum.
  2. People started speculating as to what it could be, and a few dedicated forum-crawlers discovered that both Iron Maiden and Coheed and Cambria posted similar posts on their websites at about the same time.
  3. This led to a huge thread on the Portnoy forum about how this probably means DT, Maiden, and Coheed are going on tour.
  4. This morning, Portnoy’s tweet had been removed, the forum thread had been deleted, and the posts on Maiden and Coheed’s band sites were also removed.

Now, of course this could all be pure coincidence. But the chances of all three bands having similar gaffes on the exact day seems pretty low to me. More likely, Mike Portnoy let the beans out of the bag a little too early (even though he didn’t really even say anything) and someone in his or one of the other bands’ camps got pissy and demanded posts be retracted. Which is pretty fucking pointless, because the best thing you can have is a bunch of rabid fans talking your tour up.

I’m sure we’ll find out one way or the other about these rumors in the coming days. In the meantime prog nerds like me will be fapping away at the mere thought of such a nerd-tastic lineup.

    • Biff Tannen

Why the FUCK does anyone care who opens for Maiden???!!!! Its Iron FUCKING Maiden for crying out loud, it DOES NOT MATTER who plays before them. Iron Maiden is the reason to go to the damn show !!!!

      • Alec29

Could not agree with you more, Biff.

  • Chris D.

If anything this just makes me more excited about a likely Prog Nation ’10. I do not care to see Iron Maiden or C&C.

  • Kye

I’m going to see Coheed before summer. I wouldn’t mind seeing Maiden, but I can do without Dream Theatre. I don’t dislike them, but I don’t have any desire to see them

  • Rachel

I just saw it on Mike Portnoy’s Twitter. And again in Iron Maiden’s. It’s definetly true!!

  • Geetarz

    Coheed and Cambria sucks.

  • brian roach

Sweet. Madison Square Garden. Maiden. Dream Theater. Summer! Gonna rule. And C&C ain’t that bad, they got some metal in ‘em! Great bill!

  • bretton

speculation? the dates are on Maiden’s website

  • Biff Tannen

you people that have no desire to , or ‘wouldn’t mind’ seeing Maiden are FUCKING MORONS. What the hell is wrong with you people ? Iron Maiden are by far the best band alive, and their live shows are THE BEST any band has ever put on. Ask anyone who’s seen them live, and they will tell you the same.

if you don’t like Maiden, you fail at metal and music, period.

    • Alec29

Again, it’s like you’re reading my mind.

      • Biff Tannen

right? There are some fucked up little kids in this world if they don’t understand the glory that is MAIDEN

    • http://lordsofmetal.nl/index.php?lang=en Kavorka

I agree with you, they put on a much more energetic show than thousands of young bands(and they”re supposed to be in their 50′s), I’ve seen them during their Somewhere Back In Time Tour…definitely one of my best concert-going experiences ever!

      • Chris D.

You have a taste for them, and I and others don’t. Get over it. I’m more into progressive metalcore (e.g. BTBAM, the Faceless, IWABO), not classic metal. The most important qualities in music to me are dissonance, unconventionality, technicality, and intensity. I’m sure other qualities appeal to you, and that’s great; it’s all subjective.

        • Biff Tannen

I’ve never heard any one of those gay bands you mentioned except IWABO….and that garbage sounds like 9 retards fighting over a piece of cake. It’s a total fucking joke. That band will be long gone in a year or two, passed over for another flavor of the month. “Progressive Metalcore” ; ) hahahahhaha.

I take it you are young? you’ve gotta get an appreciation and love for the classic bands in order to fully appreciate where music is now. When I was in my teens and very early 20′s , I liked “dissonance, unconventionality, technicality, and intensity.”… but I grew up and started seeking out good songwriting. I bet it will happen to you. It’s just your (presumed) youthful taste for the most ‘extreme’ thing you can find.

          Maiden rules. UP THE IRONS

          • Chris D.

Again, you’re passing judgment on musical taste as if there is a right answer. Who’s the immature one?

I also don’t just seek out extreme bands to be extreme. I simply like listening to music with the qualities I listed above more than I like listening to someone playing a barely evil metal riff repeated over and over on top of simple drumming and a high-pitched male singer in a verse-chorus-verse-chorus song structure.

And the bands I listed above are not just the flavor of the month. BTBAM, for example, has been around for a decade and has toured with bands like Opeth, Dream Theater, and Cynic.

          • Biff Tannen

But there IS a right answer, guy : Maiden > everything else !

like the other guy said, if you don’t like Maiden, you’ve gotta be silly.

          • Biff Tannen

Also, Bruce Dickinson isn’t really a high pitched singer. Sure, he can hit those notes, but he is a tennor, through and through.

Have you heard the first two albums (Iron Maiden, Killers) ?? They have a different singer, much more of a punky voice, and the albums were way ahead of their time.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jason-John-Crispen/100000169530540 Jason John Crispen

BTBAM are one of my favorite bands, but so is iron maiden. you’d be silly not to realize how much they rule. and kudos for “unconventionality” i gotta use that in a job interview!

      amen

Shit, I’d go for Maiden alone but I’ll be there for Coheed, too. Dream Theater, talented as they are, never really grabbed my attention.

  • crapmcpoopin

Well they just announced Iron Maiden and Dream Theater is definitely on, no word on Coheed’s involvement.

Nope, the Coheed announcement is a new song premiering tonight.

  • mickey luv

    maiden prog??

    • joshkid

yeah I was thinking the same thing. wtf?

  • DustintheWind

Oh ……my……God!!!!! Yes!!!!!! Yes!!!! Ahhh!!!!! Oh God!!! Uhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

  • brandonmetal

    i wouldn’t call that a prog O tour…

a prog orgasm tour would be: riverside, oceans of sadness, communic, deadsoul tribe, and an arcturus reunion.

  • Rich T.

This would be so rad. My old fave band from when I was a teen/ early 20′s was Maiden. Seen them 3 times/ met them once. My room was covered in Maiden stuff & Derek Riggs art. Never cared much for DT but many of my friends like them. Coheed & Cambria blew me away when I first heard them back in late 2003 and since then they almost immediately bacame my fave. I’ve seen them 13 times already and have tix for 2 more shows in May. Met them several times… they’re all super cool guys. I have always described Coheed to people as a mix of a little bit of Rush mixed in with a hair of Queen and then steeped heavily in Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin, & a bit of Pink Floyd & then peppered with At The Drive-In. This will be a fantastic, well-suited lineup.Way more appropriate then Coheed & Slipknot, or Coheed & A7X, or Coheed & Heaven & Hell.
Maiden, Dream Theater, & Coheed is likely the most suitable bill I’ve seen in a long time. It’s so perfect it’s genius!

  • http://evilsausage.livejournal.com/ Evil

As far as I know Maiden & DT are confirmed. Those two are right there the tour of the year. If Coheed is there too, then so much the better.
