EXCLUSIVE VIDEO PREMIERE: SOULFLY’S “RISE OF THE FALLEN”

Monday, May 3rd, 2010 at 3:00pm by

Max Cavalera is still the fucking man. He’s been going strong with Soulfly for over a decade, continuing to carve his place in metal history and show the kiddies how it’s done. In fact, Soulfly’s seventh album, Omen, comes out May 25 on Roadrunner, and shows that Max is just as relevant to metal today as he was when Sepultura released Morbid Visions nearly twenty-five years ago.

MetalSucks is proud to bring you the exclusive worldwide debut of “Rise of the Fallen,” the new video for the first single off of Omen. It intercuts awesome performance footage with a you-are-there representation of Soulfly’s brutal pits and, of course, even features an appearance by The Dillinger Escape Plan’s Greg Puciato, who contributes guest vocals to the track. Check out the clip below – and don’t forget to pre-order a copy of Omen!

“…and shows that Max is just as relevant to metal today as he was when Sepultura released Morbid Visions nearly twenty-five years ago.”

which goes to say that soulfly is completely irrelevant. max was relevant from “beneath the remains” right until people heard how god-awful the first soulfly record was.

    • Tribe 4 Life

u obviously do not play an instrument and know nothing about music. Soulfly incorporates other styles of music into metal. Max is a monster musician, and all Soulfly records are great. r u going to say that Marc Rizzo sux because he plays Latin and Flamenco???

    • http://www.myspace.com/resistbrasil alexandre

MAX represents metal, AND IS ONE OF THE MOST CREATIVE metal music of recent times.
DUE TO GREAT MUSICAL CULTURE IN BRAZIL IS THAT HE CAN MIX ALL THESE ELEMENTS AND SHOW THAT METAL CAN BE MORE THAN THAT YOU HEAR.

  • Kyle

Seriously Soulfly is a complete and utter waste of metal.

    • 666Dave666

You are a complete waste of Shit!!!

      • James

Well said 666Dave666. I’d be interested to see what metal produced within the last decade Kyle deems to be to the standard of Soulfly. Apart from a few gems such as SkinLab there has been precious little that compares to the talent shown in Soulfly.

        • Cryptosis77

James, you are a complete Moron. Skinlab sucks, and did you see all those neanderthal meatheads in the pit for that really boring Soulfly song? Let me see; Opeth, Mastodon, Obscura, Cynic, Baroness, Isis, Neurosis, Down, Nile, 1349, Watain, Meshuggah, not to mention Dillinger Escape Plan. All amazing bands that have put out great music this decade. Keep listening to your metal aimed at the lowest common denominator and I will keep listening to intelligent, progressive music…

          • Tribe 4 Life

while there are other bands that are more “progressive” than Soulfly, hardly any can play the grooves that Soulfly put out. i agree with u James.

    • conspiracy-upon-us

Kyle give credit where its due! Max Cavelara is one of the founders of metal. I can tell your the type of guy who puts St Anger from metallica on repeat. Your weak like your comment. Now go worship dave mathews like a good little boy:)

      • KilledByDeath

Funny that you should say this. This song reminded me precisely of St. Anger.
And what’s the point of having Rizzo in band and not have a damn solo?

        • KilledByDeath

And my grammar is bad, i realized it now :/

    • Trooper of Doom

Kyle go fuck yourself, if it wasnt for Max you probablly wouldnt be listneing to the metal that you listen too. If it wasnt for Sepultura and Soulfly alot of bands woulndt exist so go Fuck your self.

      • beautyschaos

max cavalera will rip the fucking jugular out of any metal band willing to contest him this motherfucker is old as hell and writing harder and sicker shit then his previous relesase album after album i mean fuck dark ages was pure evil conguer was nasty and omen will anally rape you with a razor blade dildo i promise you that and lets not forget the work he is doing with his brother igor on cavalera conspiracy that shit is just sick sepultra come on anyone denying max and all his metal greatness is a fool a liar and a coward and needs to go put his disturbed cd back in the cd player and stay amongst your poser peers in other words kyle your a fucking idiot do the world a favor and kill yourself max soulfly all the cavaleras sepultra they fucking own metal

        • ken

          soulfly rocks! K.H in cleve

      • KilledByDeath

Just a question, what exactly did Sepultura or Soulfly start? Death by Metal demo preceded Sepultura’s work, and Soulfly gave nothing new to the genre.

And if you’re talking about metal in general, well, then Sabbath.

        • Kurt

KilledByDeath, Said it exactly right! These bands both sux. Yes Metallica’s St. Anger sucks, Megadeth all the way!

      • Cryptosis77

Yea, alot of crappy bands wouldn’t exist, oh boohoo…

    • GHAWK

      Klye,

Your parents shouldn’t have waisted their time on you. They should have wiped you on the hotel sheets.
If you don’t Metal ( or Soulfly), don’t fuckin’ watch or listen you dumb ass! Go Google your gay Facebitches!!

    • chris

      I LOVE SOUFLY!! YAYAYAYAY!!

  • msv81

The new album is pretty thrashy, seems like Max and co. went with a more throwback sound on this one. I’ve only managed to give it about 4 or 5 spins since grabbing it last week, but so far I’m leaning towards 2008′s “Conquer” as being the better record. Nonetheless, “Omen” is still a pretty good album.

Apparently the tracking for Cavalera Conspiracy’s new record is complete and they’re eyeing a fall release date, I’m definitely looking forward to that more so than Soulfly.

    • Gravedigger

I’ve been listening to Max since the Beneth The Remains album. Sepultura is one of my favorite Metal bands of all time. I have had a love /hate relationship with Soulfly from the begining 1998. The 1st self titled album has some great ripping songs on it and a lot of great drumming and percussion. But compared with Sepultura’s 1st without Max “Against” it cannot compare. The one after that “Prmitive” is absolute garbage. However I did see them with Pantera and Morbid Angel on that tour and it was a good show. 25 drummers on stage at once. When “Dark Ages” came out a friend of mine said it was good and I didn’t believe it till I listened to it. With the addition of Rizzo on guitar, Soulfly once again became a technical oriented band. “Conquer” is absolutly phenomenal and seeing them perform the songs live on the “Blood, Fire, War, Hate” tour was fucking incrediable. They played Slayer’s Angel of Death faster than Slayer! This new one is different. “Rise of The Fallen” is not the best song on the album. It’s good but not as good as “Conquer” Also the bonus disc contains “Refuse/Resist ” and the reason they covered it cause they got Maz’s son playing the drums. Also a Zeppelin cover of “Four Sticks” is on there preety good metal version. Thanks for reading.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ian-Wilmot/1177765489 Ian Wilmot

best part of the song is the guest vocals from greg
that guy is fucking amazing at vocals

  • Sliv

@yetzer hara I agree with your statement about the first Soulfly album (and most of their other albums as well), but this song gives me hope that maybe won’t be as bad as some of the rest of their discography.

    • yetzer hara

i didn’t listen to/watch the video. i’m sure i’ll sleep just as well tonight having not heard this new soulfly.

  • Sliv

    *it won’t be as bad
guess my fingers got a head of my brain there.

  • Brian \m/(-_-)\m/

btw, does anyone know that the deluxe edition of omen contains 3 bonus cover tracks, one of which is refuse/resist? does that make any sense? isnt there a certain arrogance in covering urself? thats gotta be like some indirect violation of the iron maiden rule or something…

    • gauche

but then what would bands play when they go on tour?!?!

      • Brian \m/(-_-)\m/

its a little different when you’re covering urself from ur old band. obviously ur allowed to play your own material, but when youre max calvera in soulfly and u hav a sepultura cover on ur new album, idk its weird. its like there being a sabbath cover on a dio record, just that would b more blasphemous i think

        • gauche

if he doesn’t something different with it i don’t see a problem. if it’s just a rehash…at least it’s not on the regular album.

          • Brian \m/(-_-)\m/

i guess. i hope he did something different though, that would b cool

  • http://myspace.com/stixnstond666 StixnStoned in L.A.(Now In O.C.)

Pit videos are cool! Nice to see Max sportin’ some MorbidAngel too, f*ck yeah! Its Max doin’ what he does best!

HEY MAX LET ME BE YOUR NEW DRUMMER!!
Time to change up that line-up!!!

Soulfly is the best band I’ve ever come across and have helped me through a lot of bullshit in my life. If it wasn’t for soulfly I’d probably be dead right now somewhere in time. But now that I have soulfly in my life I fight for what I believe in and I will continue to fight from now until the day that I die. So back the fuck up and leave you negativity to yourself. Because we don’t need and we sure as hell don’t want it!!!! The SOULFLY NATION will continue to do what they do cause were are back to set it free confronting the negative!!!!!!! SOULFLY TRIBE FORVER!!!! Ain’t nobody gonna fuck with me, Ain’t nobody gonna fuck with the tribe!!!!!!! Darwin Mitchell The Rebel Warrior

    • yetzer hara

      1) you sound like a juggalo.

      2) “If it wasn’t for soulfly I’d probably be dead right now somewhere in time.” this statement serves as another reason why soulfly sucks. all of us, as human beings, would probably be better off if you weren’t alive.

      3) fucking learn to speak fucking english, you fucking tool.

    • Genial Gentile

      Soulfly fucking blows.

    • gauche

for someone rallying against neagativity you sure do wanna fight a lot.

    • Truthfully

This just in…Soulfly broke up. You may go kill yourself now.

    • Tribe 4 Life

couldnt have said it better myself Rebel-Warrior!!!

  • Dave

Fuckin Kick Ass Shit right here!! Everything Max touches turns to black gold!!!

    • Genial Gentile

Everything Max has touched since Nailbomb has been “brown” gold.

      • GHAWK

Man, all of you negative people that don’t believe in FREEDOM thru art just plain sucks. I’ve spent my entire life expressing myself thru music and whom ever knocks another for their taste is just an arrogant FUCK.
Soulfly ( MAX ) has always stayed true to themselves and anyone that can’t see that is blind to reality. Free your minds and free your souls .

P.S. ( Truthfully …who ever you are), Soulfly will never die!!

  • 666Dave666

I am 42, and been a hardcore metal fan for almost 30 years..Anyone who says Soulfly, or anything Max has done, sucks–is an idiot!! Soulfly(and Max) has their own unique sound which is hard to come by these days..Soulfly shreds !!!!

  • Jason

To all you haters out there if you can play metal better than Max and co. bring it!!

  • gojirasaurus

old soulfly is terrible. last 2-3 albums have been a good progression

    • http://www.last.fm/user/jugglemonkey Jugglemonkey

Agreed, they got much better when they ditched the nu-metal shtick.

      • Shanx!

        accurate.

    • libertyordeath

hmm i really like soulfly one of only a few i listen to

that statement is correct every album has been better than the previous for sure hope trend continues, but hope this song isnt the norm. max shouldn’t have anymore guest vocals……greg’s voice is hard for me to take seriously.

  • http://www.heavyblogisheavy.com/ Alkahest

This song is good. You can thank Greg for that one.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/David-Yu/2207107 David Yu

That was a pretty cool video. The fight scenes in the pit seem pretty unique… angle wise.

  • CHRIS CALVIN

    PRETTY FUCKIN HARDCORE MAN.

  • Chief

anyone notice that electronic noise sounds just like the end of “Black Ark” on Cavalera Conspiracy?

  • D

What the fuck is wrong with you pieces of shit…. Max Cavalera is and will be one of the greatest metal icons of all time. Boo hoo you fuckin douche bags “he is playin his own stuff” what the fuck are you talking shit for he plays Sepultura constantly on tour and I don’t see one mother fucker not fuckin lovin it. Sepultura and Soulfly go hand in hand you fuckin idiots. For the most part bands progress, do different shit and people still love them….. you three or four jack ass metal heads (yetzer hara , Genial Genital) need to go watch a video from a band they like and get the fuck off of here. SOULFLY TRIBE

    • conspiracy-upon-us

      AGREED 100%

    • yetzer hara

dude, i love sepultura from “beneath the remains” through “chaos a.d,” along with nailbomb. i probably like nailbomb as much, if not more than any sepultura record. no one’s saying that max isn’t a metal icon. his/sepultura’s influence upon a generation of metal in the 90′s is probably only 2nd to pantera’s….

on the other hand, soulfly just isn’t that great. it’s the same formulaic stuff max has milked since “roots.” i saw soulfly play at the abyss in houston, texas the night before their first album was released and it sucked. the only good part of the show was when they played sepultura and nailbomb songs… of course people go apeshit when they hear those old sepultura songs. sepultura has a LEGACY. soulfly will not.

kind of like the only cool part about seeing velvet revolver is hearing the guns ‘n roses songs…. or like how seeing damageplan was completely worthless except for hearing vinnie and dime play ‘walk” and “a new level.” do you think anyone wanted to hear new voivod songs on their last tour? no. they wanted to hear “killing technology.”

      • Genial Gentile

Every word you say is true. I love Max too and what he stands for, but to claim that the music that he is writing now is still relevant is myopic and just wrong. BTW- I DID watch the video…sounds like the same tired nu-metal Soulfly has been cranking out since their inception. Even Greg’s addition can’t save this. If anyone thinks this is groundbreaking or “totally kicks ass”, you don’t know dick and probably REALLY like Korn. Fact.

        • ken

got the life Is a great song

  • Col. Toker

Genial Gentile hates Soulfly because GG worships Satan and Soulfly doesn’t. Get over it… Your all a bunch of tools. What kind of name is that anyway? I’m gonna leave now before i get your poser juice all over me.

    • Genial Gentile

What kind of name is Soulfly?

  • Tensign

Soulfly is aweome shit man. If you don’t like soulfly then your a doushbag and need your head checked. Soulfly has hard riffs and awesome changes is there music.

    SOULFLY TRIBE 2010

    • tyson ded

      seconded.

i listen to plenty of different kinds of metal (from haarp to nasum to darkthrone to decapited to slayer to the deftones), and definitely wouldn’t consider myself a typical “mall-metal fan” by any means. still, max, rizzo, joe and bobby keeps cranking out these HEAVY fucking albums that totally bring back my teenage rage and urge to bust some skulls.. Succcch a groooove. I’m aching to hear these new Omen songs live..

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Chris-Finntroll/1567502385 Chris Finntroll

Is it just me or is there a half-second Fred Durst cameo like 30 seconds before the end?

Also, I always have been a huge Max supporter, but a lot of you Soulfly Tribe people do sound like Juggalos. Please knock it off

  • http://342009 MARIOBAZLONG@HOTMAIL.COM

    DE MODHER FACKAR

  • Cokane

The Soulfly formula sounds so tired to me…It’s about fucking time Max and Andreas get back together.

  • Dannny

Jesus Christ, you fucking bunch of pessimistic twats; I absolutely hate it when people compare everything Max has done or is doing to Sepultura. The man is one of the most relevant metal artists around — his writing might be simplistic and Soulfly’s new material might not match up to the speed and complexities of Sepultura’s records but Cavalera continues to write what he feels like writing, plays like he feels like fucking playing. The first couple of Soulfly records had elements of nu-metal in them but there’s always been a twist, always been more to Soulfly than bog standard riffing. Their fourth album, Prophecy; Max found and captured the real vibe and groove of Soulfly. Dark Ages was fantastic; a flawless metal album; Conquer was huge, laden with great riffs laced with Egyptian sounds and influences which complimented their sound perfectly. Their new album might be stripped bare, simplistic, thrashy, mid-paced but Max is just writing songs that he would like to hear when listening to a metal album. All of you are just trying to find reasons to criticise him and it’s a load of bollocks cause quite frankly, he’s still as relevant as he’ll ever be and ever was, and Soulfly still stand high up above most of the shite we hear today. Fuck you all.
    Soulfly Tribe.

    • eoin

I agree, i didnt really love soulfly until prophecy. everything since them has been brillant. dont think the new album is as good as the last three, but has 5 or 6 lethal songs and is better than 99% of other music out there. Max is a legend and should leave sepultura in the past

    • Perpetual Black Screen Name

That’s all right, you can fuckin’ have ‘em. Take the rest of the Soulfly tribe with you. Then you can all start Cavelara Town and you can all drink the punch. Then I won’t have to watch one of the most relevant vocalist’s in metal today perform with a “legend” just because Sepultura was probably one of the bands that broke him into metal.

And for the record, I think Sepultura is crap too. The only reason I brought them up is because everyone seems to think they’re so influential.

  • Fufkin

    Jumpthefuckup!

    I’ll pass.

  • Gaia

I am getting sick of Blabbermouth comments appearing here…

  • martin

    this is fuckin good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Masko

Amazing song ! Soulfly thumbs up!

  • No Way Yahweh

Yeah, I’ll take it. This is a good track. Sure Soulfly have been hit and miss over the years, but fuck it, it’s – Max is the man.

  • Hector

Sepultura was a death metal band before death. in fact I’ll say they were the first death metal band. First death album wasnt till 87 I believe sepultura came out in 86.

  • ferocious_fetus

Greg Puciato looks scary on those 1984 style monitors. His vocals are pretty raw on this track and make Max’s grunt/bark sound even nastier.

Not a horrible track…better than that Nu-Metal bullshit Soulfly was doing back in the day.
Collaborations with Dillinger Escape Plan > Collaborations with Limp Bizkit.

Max already buried the hatchet with Igor, now he needs to gives Andreas a call and WE ALL WIN.

  • guey

Gotta love hoe killshit engage have yet to prove this man wrong!!

  • Jay

I think I feel a tumor forming on my brain after listening to this song. If this is any indication of what I can expect from the rest of the album, by all means, look for my obituary in the paper a few days after “Omen” is released. Cause of death….brain aneurysm.

  • The Gideon

I’m sorry, but what does Max’s sepultura greatness/history have to do with this song? Not that i agree with the people who say it sucks.

  • MoonSnake

I don’t know much about Max Cavalera, but anyone who breaks the high two strings on their guitar and never replaces them because he “never uses them” deserves little respect as a guitar player, much less a musician.

    • Dannny

maybe you should do your research, kiddo.

  • Perpetual Black Screen Name

Hate Soulfly. Definitely hate Max Crap-elera. And I really don’t understand this.

Yes, Greg “the mothefuckin’ man” Puciato is involved with this song. But why? Has anyone every listened to a Dillinger record then put on a Soulfly/Nailbomb/Cavelera Conspiracy record afterward? I think not. You would not catch anyone wearing a DEP tshirt at a Soulfly show. This doesn’t make sense. Cavalera has been known for talking massive amounts of shit on newer metal bands (especially label mates, Killswitch Engage) and I’m sorry but, The Dillenger Escape Plan is a newer metal band. Although they’re a groundbreaking band, they started within the last 12-13 years. It’s just kind of odd.

Anyway, fuck Soulfly and fuck Max. Puciato’s performance was pretty solid (as per usual) but I really like nothing else about the song. Soulfly needs to stop putting out records. They’re trying to throw leads and crazy shit into their music now but anyone whose heard they’re first couple records knows they’re just another Nu-Metal band. I mean come one, the guy played his signature guitar without the last 3 strings on it for almost a decade. What kind of backward ass bs is that?

Stop trying to catch up with the trends, stop pushing your music in new directions. It doesn’t work for you Mr. Cavalera. Just quit it. Now. Get ‘back to the primitive’ and stop letting your shitty Nu-metal band steal the extreme metal spotlight. It would have been more beneficial to read an article about Lemmy sprouting a new mole on his face.

    • ryan

Hey man, fuck off with your ludicrous generalizations. Been listening to DEP since 2000 and Soulfly since 1998. Proud to say I still support both. i’ve be glad to send you photos over me in my calculating infinity shirt or my primitive era hoodie if it will appease you.

sure, max has had some missteps, but i challenge you to watch any live video ever and dare to say that he’s not twice the performer/entertainer of most of the regurgitated caricatures of metal frontmen that i typically see at concerts i attend..

despite all the thugheaded commenting, i think max and his band’s deserve a lot more respect, press, and notoreity for their inventiveness and willingness to adventure through metal freely than they have earned.

either way, stoked on omen and option paralysis right now. i’m content. thanks max. thanks greg.

      • ryan

oooh, the grammars a little off, but i’m sure you get the gist. .. i guess that’s just what happens when hastily leaving confrontational comments while trying to distract yourself from doing some rapid-fire studying for your final exams…

  • Chris

Seriously… I’ve hated this song since it’s been released on the web and I was terrified the rest of the album was just as shitty as this song. But FUCK NO!!!! I’ve grabbed the album a couple of days ago, and this is the worst song on that album. The rest is just fucking genius compared to this!!! I fucking love OMEN!! This song just doesn’t represent the sound the rest of the album has. The rest of the album is SUPER!

I don’t know what it is about this song. Maybe the high tone + that DEP idiot ‘singing’. I fucking hate it.

    • Chris

I just HAVE to add… I’ve bought all previous Soulfly albums as Special Edition and I’m about to do the same with this album. I was just very, very, very! disappointed by this song that I just HAD to check the rest of the album by downloading it. My soul is at peace now. I can buy OMEN at release :D

  • Ben

Jeez, that Dillenger hack sounds like crap…know I remember why I haven’t bothered to listen to anything from their new one.

  • ITTOA666

if Max is into Morbid Angel, why doesn’t he start writing death metal? Please get away from nu metal.

  • Tribe 4 Life

do any of u Soulfly haters play an instrument??? all this nu-metal bullshit means nothing. adding elements of hip hop or music from different parts of the world makes music more interesting. Max is a musician, not a stupid fan who is only happy hearing Slayer. no knock on Slayer, they are great, but so is Soulfly. most musicians would agree.

  • sonnenblume

    Yeeeeeeeeeeeah SOULFLY!! ::::::::::::::::: L00000VE you MAX!! :]

  • Mantallica

Well… not bad… but not great either! The man doing vocals might aswell retire and let the “old” Cavalera do the vocals… what a turn off he is!

Cavalera rox! I wish he got back together with Sepultura that has gone downhill ever since he left.

And you guys up there. Don’t like it? go listen to Britney Spears instead!

    Rock on Max!
