YOUR FIRST TASTE OF TIMES OF GRACE

Friday, October 15th, 2010 at 2:00pm by

Times of Grace, the project from current Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz (someday I’ll learn to spell that name without having to look it up or resort to calling him “Adam D.”) and former Killswitch Engage vocalist Jesse Leach, have released their first song unto the world. It’s called “Strength in Numbers,” and is available as a free download here, assuming you’re willing to subscribe to Times of Grace’s e-mail list. It will only be available for free for 48 hours; on October 19 it becomes available via various digital retailers.

My first thoughts about the track? Gee, it sounds an awful lot like KsE. (I’d even go so far as to say that the militaristic drums kinda remind me of “Life to Lifeless,” one of my favorite tracks from Killswitch Engage’s modern classic Alive or Just Breathing.) That’s not a shock given the guys involved, except that earlier this year Leach told me that the music “pulls from metal/rock/ambient shoe gaze type stuff, as well as punk and blues,” and there ain’t no ambient shoe gaze, punk, or blues to be heard here. But it’s just one song from the album, so obviously we can’t judge just yet.

And besides, people who have been yearning for Leach to return to Killswitch should be overjoyed. It’s not hard to listen to this and imagine an alternate world in which Leach never left the band. And Leach’s vocals certainly sound great, and Dutkiewicz plays a pretty killer guitar solo, which is something I always wished he’d do more of in KsE.

Go here to get the song, then weigh in with your thoughts in the comments section. Times of Grace’s full-length debut, The Hymn of a Broken Man, comes out via Roadrunner on January 18.

Sounds great. Bummer about the release date being pushed back so late.

So I’ve been listening to this track all week (itunes says 61 times to be exact) and I love it. I admit that Alive or Just Breathing is one of my favorite records of all time and I wanted to love this before I even heard it, but I really do think its fantastic and hope the record is a lot more of the same. After repeated listens I have to agree with Axl: it is a very Killswitch sounding song. That’s certainly not a complaint, but I think it’s fairly revealing that Adam would save material to record with Jesse that would otherwise basically fit his own band. I think it shows who he really wants to be working with. Certainly can’t blame him, these two obviously get the best out of each other and have amazing chemistry. Howard Jones, while technically a great singer, is just an awful frontman. Jesse is everything he isn’t: passionate, intense and serious. I saw Jesse perform with Killswitch in March and the band sounded ferocious in a way that they simply do not and cannot with Howard at the helm. I could also be reading way too much into this. It is certainly possible that the record as a whole is something entirely apart from this song as they claim. I mean, pretty much anyone interested in this project is going to be a Killswitch fan whether it be Jesse era or not. So, it would make sense to release a track to wet the appetite of those fans. It certainly worked on me.

hahahahaha, it sounds just like killswitch, whats the point !

  • Lard

    Anyone else notice the autotune?

    • metallicbrian

I did and it pissed me off. Aside from that, I dig it.

  • Jim Scrimshander

Decent track, it does sound a lot like KSE. I guess the chorus has a “punkish” gallop to it but yeah I don’t hear those other elements coming into play.

  • TomHanksFan

I liked him in KSE when they first started out… I followed him to Seemless and liked it… I followed him to The Empire Shall Fall and love it… I have not been disappointed with Jesse thus far. I am pretty damn sure this will be a great album for the ‘Jesse Leach’ collection.

      What he said. +1

  • All Out War

Definitely better than the last two KSE albums.

I wouldn’t say it’s exactly like Killswitch, but pretty close. Like the stuff on Alive or Just Breathing better though. The guitar tone on that album is a beast.

  • el fucko

What ever happened to Leach’s band Seemless? I liked them.

    • Dr. Steve Brule

They broke up *officially* earlier this year.

  • Ray Peterson212

Being a HUGE fan of Alive or Just Breathing Killswitch , I cant wait to hear the rest of this album. Jesse’s voice is so good.

This sounds like what the last Killswitch CD should’ve been.

  • Tacoloft

It sounds awesome – good stuff.

  • Tacoloft

@Tonberry – I hear you man – the last KSE album was their worst.

  • PatrickSTL

I think this is worst than anything KSE has ever done.

  • SeanN

Since they jacked the name from Neurosis, the least they can do is give props to that far superior band in press releases and interviews. Just saying.

  • Dr. Steve Brule

    Holy fuck this is great.

  • xfkx

    Pretty easy: Dootkievitsch

  • Alex

This is already better then anything KSE put out after AOJB!

    • paganheart

Sounds like Alive Or Just Breathing Part II. I’m a fan of both Killswitch and Seemless but I’ll have to hear what the rest of the album sounds like before I decide if it’s worth the investment.

  • Jonathan

It does sound like KsE… but only because of the guitar tone and Leach’s voice. The style of the actual song feels something apart from current KsE… but that alternate universe KsE with Leach and solos? Definitely. And it’s much better.

  • Aguiar

Seemless is done man. Jessee is on The empire shall fall and ToG, Derek in Unearth…

I LOVE JESSE LEACH and as says All Out War this is better than KsE albums

  • Fufkin

Jesse brings the fire in the belly and passion that I haven’t heard in the last few KSE albums.

  • Slaughterhouse

Damn, I was too late to download and now I must wait. I guess I will be hitting up youtube to see if someone uploads it

  • Chris Berseth

I like it. I think it sounds like something from AOJB or The Fall of Ideals by ATR. Very interested to hear the rest of the album…
