100 Years ago being a black american was seen as being a second class citizen, not deserving nor entitled to the same rights and responsibilities as whites. What you’re seeing here is another group being denied their basic civil liberties based strictly on the the fact that they’re different. This is not a “mental illness” and no reputable therapist would ever think it’s something they can fix or rid the person of. It’s straight ignorance to think otherwise. I’m going to assume you’ve never met anyone who’s admitted to being transgender, and based on your accepting attitude I think I know why, but let me try to bring this a little closer to home for you. It’s estimated that 1 percent of all Americans are living their lives open as transgender. On the same note, some polls find that upwards of 20 percent of men are cross dressers. There is an overlap in these numbers, where some cross dressers are not necessarily transgender, but some are and aren’t ready to identify as such yet. Based off of those statistics, I am willing to say I’m POSITIVE that you have met a transgender person.

Now I’m going to go one step further. There has been a movement with a very small subset of genetic lesbian women who are discriminating against transgender women. This has nothing to do with potential partners, but consider them the Westboro Baptist Church of the LGBT community.

While none of this is your problem whatsoever, and I really don’t care if you “accept” them or not. What I do ask you is to respect them more than saying they have a “mental illness” or cowards. The strength it takes to come out to your friends, family and co workers and tell them that you’ve been living a lie for 20+ years, but you want to make it right now is incredible. It’s a level of strength I don’t think either of us have.

I’m sure you’re going to take this as more “victim” bullshit, but make no mistake, insisting that they’re suffering from an illness or need to be fixed is an attack.

My courage has no bearing in this conversation one way or another. If you’d like to go down that road on a different conversation, so be it, but I have nothing to prove on that point.

The reason I bring up being black vs being transgender is that they have been denied the same civil liberties, albeit at different times. And neither one is a mental disorder. The issue of being transgender isn’t in the same conversation as being psychotic or schizophrenic. Gender identity disorder is a very real thing, gender doesn’t match their sex. Yes, there are detrimental aspects of this, such as backlash from friends and family. Being denied medical care and some very simple liberties you and I take for granted. However, there is zero detrimental effect to the larger population, and every single one of these issues can be fixed with proper education of what they are really going through.

Alex, both you and I are getting very heated here and neither of us is making headway. I’ll be the first to admit that I jumped the gun and became a tad aggressive, and I apologize for that. I’ve known a few transgender men and women in my life, some of which are very close to me, and I’ve seen what they’ve run into. It’s not an excuse, but it is my rational. If you’d like to talk about this more direct instead of on a message board (which is admittedly fairly hard to keep track of) and so we don’t bore the rest of the community, I’ll be happy to give you my email.

MAKE UP YOUR MIND. WHICH IS IT? Explain what kind of disorder it is, if it isn’t “mental”. I admit “transgendered” people have some serious problems, and I’m sorry for all their pain. However, I will never pretend to accept it as normal, because it not. And nothing will change the fact that it’s not.
