MASTODON’S “CURL OF THE BURL” VIDEO IS A MUST-WATCH

Vince and I saw Opeth and Katatonia last night, but the song that was stuck in Vince’s head the entire evening — the song which he kept singing over and over and over again — wasn’t “The Devil’s Orchard.” It was “Curl of the Burl,” which, as you no doubt are aware by now, is the second track off of Mastodon’s latest, The Hunter (streaming here). In fact, I’d posit that one of The Hunter‘s greatest faults — besides the fact that there’s no way in heck the band is gonna be able to pull off the vocals live, of course — is that “Burl” and the song which immediately precedes it, “Black Tongue,” are the best songs on the record. That’s not to say that the rest of the album isn’t good — it’s very good — it’s just to say that I think they blow their wad a little early on this one.

ANYWAY, “Curl of the Burl” now has a video, which you can check out below. And, yes, it does continue the tradition of Mastodon having totally awesome videos. Seriously, somebody just give this band one of those stupid MTV VMA Lifetime Achievement awards already.

The Hunter comes out September 27 on Reprise/Warner Bros.

      Also, judging from what I’ve heard from so many people as I’m holding out, they say its one of their best albums.
      The ending to that music video was really stupid.
      Just saying.

          Yall some fuckin frito fiends…Shit ain’t even out yet and it’s OKAY.  Albums need some time. Blood Mountain took me a year cause i just couldn’t dig that it’s just a gallery of moments…Deconstruction is falling off my radar with every consecutive listen despite the initial giddiness….and uh, LOAD is just warming up?

    If I may recall, this is the first video that doesn’t feature at least one member from the band. But, as for the video, I have no clue what the fuck I just watched and it was glorious.

    What I learned:
    -Don’t snort or smoke trees because, if you do, you become Paul Bunyan, then you turn into a tree, then you burst into flames and can’t reach boobies.

      …still, you get to be teased by four O.K Blondies that flashlight their titties and dance around you…not a bad way to go.

      I learned it is O.K to snort trees, you get extra arms which can be helpful for pulling out solos, I wouldn’t cook a concoction with Human Mushrooms though, that’s what really fucks you up, unless you want to turn into a tree, in that case it’s fine.

    I have to say, the video is fuckin’ sweet. I don’t why though, but I’d like it better if there were shots of the band playing intermixed in there. Like in the video for Oblivion. Or maybe I just wanted to see Hinds ripping that solo

    I’m going to disagree with those being the best tracks. They are fantastic, but I think the additional time everyone has had to digest and analyze them is what makes them stand out currently. The rest of that record is growing on me like a fungus.

    Also, this video rules.

    The first two tracks are the worst two tracks on the album.  They almost made me give up on it.  Start with track 3 and you’ve got a decent album, but those first two are just pop rock nonsense written for radio play.
    Even though the rest of the album is good, it clearly could’ve been a lot better.  The pieces are there to write 7 or 8 really good/borderline epic songs, instead of a dozen 2 – 3 minute “easy” songs(from a songwriting perspective).

          I dunno, from what I’ve heard this one sounds like a commercial venture, or, (in the most offensive way to put it)  this is the most like nickleback Mastodon has ever sounded…

      mastodon have always been barely even metal. as least by my ear. they have as much in common with jazz and other genres as they do with metal

    Jesus, if Curl of the Burl is one of the BEST songs I wouldn’t want to hear the WORST songs

    I am kind of looking forward to hearing The Hunter but the singles are just so… Mastodon by numbers

    Good album. The songs I like are right up there with the best since Leviathan. It sounds like them which is good compared to some other bands trying to ‘reinvent’ themselves this year. or morse code for the S*****g. O*t. For the _other bands_.
