THE ALBUM OF THE DAY IS… ONSLAUGHT, KILLING PEACE

51nqhtas1dl_aa240_.jpgSpeaking of underrated recent releases… Onslaught may be the Rodney Dangerfield of thrash bands: they get no respect. A second generation thrash act from the U.K., this recent album is the band’s first since 1989, and what it lacks in ambition it makes up for in pure metal kick-assery. Sure, it may not be as ambitious as, say, Machine Head’s The Blackening, but it is a welcome breath of fresh air from the tired metalcore schtick that eight out of ten bands seem to be doing these days.

Seriously: there isn’t a bad song here, and a few (including “Pain,” “Tested to Destruction,” and the title track) are legitimately jump-on-the-couch, throw-beer-bottles-at-the-wall, set-your-cat-on-fire fantastic. This is old school 80’s thrash metal the way it was meant to be made.
