THOUGHTS ON POT – METALHEADS LIGHTEN UP

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011 at 12:00pm by

I’m probably the last guy around the MetalSucks Mansion that should be writing about pot.

Last time I smoked was over 20 years ago. I was riding around in a van with a couple of dudes from Deadhorse somewhere in Houston, Texas, having a great ol’ time. For some inexplicable reason though, I decided to give up the ganja then and there. There was no traumatic reason for doing so. I just knew I was done. Haven’t touched the stuff ever since.

So, instead of trying to opine about marijuana, I decided to turn to some of my metalhead friends in the business. I simply asked them to write down their thoughts on pot.

These are their stories:

BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY HAVEN’T DESTROYED MY FAITH YET

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010 at 12:30pm by

I’ve written several times before about By Any Means Necessary, who continue to be one my favorite unsigned bands in all of metaldom; luckily, being “unsigned” doesn’t mean what it used to in this day and age of home recording technology and the interwebs. And so almost two years after I heard this outfit’s self-titled, self-released three song EP, they’ve gone and recorded a new EP, label or no. It’s called Faith Destroyer, and it’s streaming in its entirety here.

And, hey, guess what? It doesn’t suck! The band hasn’t switched gears and started recording deathcore or whatever’s fashionable just ’cause it might hasten their journey in the spotlight; they’re still playing tasty, set-the-dog-on-fire deathrash in the vein of bands ranging from Dukes-era Exodus to Machine Head to Chimaira. If that sounds appealing — and it really ought to — head over to By Any Means Necessary’s MySpace page to stream the EP. You’ll only be disappointed if you’re a dick.

BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY TO SUPPORT DIVINE HERESY AND GIGAN

BAMN

Why oh why are By Any Means Necessary still unsigned? Their three-song demo/EP or whatever rocked. I know they’re young, but so are half the bands out there right now. And most of them aren’t as good as BAMN (there’s an awesome abbreviation if ever there was one).

Hopefully this news will lead to good things, though: the band will be playing support for Divine Heresy and Gigan (featuring former members of Hate Eternal) on six tour dates next month. I’ve still never seen this band live, but if their shows are as good as their songs, I’d wager it’ll be a lot of fun – way more fun that, say, Divine Heresy.

By Any Means Necessary recently completed tracking for their new EP and are currently mixing those songs. Hopefully we’ll more updates on that soon; in the meantime, get tour dates after the jump, and please check these guys out if you can.

SOMEONE (STILL NEEDS TO) SIGN THIS BAND, BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY

This past October I tried to help get the word out about Texas’ By Any Means Necessary, who are one of my most favorite unsigned acts out there right now. Seriously – I listened to this group’s three-song EP more times last year some of the so-called “best” releases of ’08. I think this band fucking rocks.

Unfortunately, the band remains unsigned… but hopefully that will change soon. Vocalist Adam Wright just e-mailed me to say that the band is heading into the studio to record a new demo with Scott Sargeant, the former Skinlab guitarist who produced Lääz Rockit’s 2008 release, Left for Dead.

Personally, I’m just excited to see what these boys do next. While I wait, check out their MySpace page, and if you’re an industry person, maybe think about signing them, m’kay?

SOMEONE SIGN THIS BAND, BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008 at 11:26am by

Sasha Horn at Metal Review recently wrote a piece on the three song self-titled EP from unsigned band By Any Means Necessary. Here’s the part that caught my attention:

“…the rodents have crawled out of their cage, and have learned to conduct some experiments of their own. Specifically, the equation of Exodus divided by Vio-Lence, plus the square root of Devastation, times Chimaira.”

Well, Horn said the magic word – actually, there’s like four magic words in that sentence – so I had to check this band out. And, holy crap, am I glad I did.
