Converge Bassist Nate Newton Joins Cavalera ConspiracyI guess Nate Newton, bassist for Converge and guitarist for Old Man Gloom and Doomriders, is determined to work with Max Cavalera come hell or high water… or maybe it’s the other way ’round. See, Newton was long said to be a part of the band that eventually became Killer Be Killed — featuring Cavalera, The Dillinger Escape Plan’s Greg Puciato, and Mastodon’s Troy Sanders — and while it would appear that didn’t pan out, he has now joined Cavalera Conspiracy as their new bassist. He replaces Fireball Ministry’s Johny Chow, who himself replaced Gojira’s Joe Duplantier, who played bass on CC’s debut album, Inflikted. In fact, this statement from Newton makes it sound like he’s actually just going to be a studio session player the way Duplantier was, and won’t be touring with The Brothers Cavalera…

“Hello friends! Just wanted to get some info to everyone since I’ve been getting so many messages…. Yes I am playing bass on the new Cavalera Conspiracy record. No…I am not going to leave Converge. I thought it would be fun to play with the guys who wrote some of my favorite metal records. That’s all…no big story here other than it’s pretty awesome when people who’s music you’ve admired for years ask you to be a part of it with them. I’m honored! – Nate”

…although who knows, if his schedule allows maybe he will tour with ’em. Time will tell.

ANYWAY, I’ll be curious to hear what it sounds like when Newton plays with a band like Cavalera Conspiracy, whose sound is considerably more slick than that of any of his other projects. Unless Cavalera Conspiracy really are making a grind record, in which case like WHOA, y’know?
