Ex-God Forbid Guitarist Doc Coyle’s New Band Vagus Nerve Releases Song, Launches Kickstarter

God Forbid guitarist Doc Coyle left the band he’d started as a teenager in 2013, and soon after departed the cozy confines of East Brunswick, New Jersey for the greener pastures of Los Angeles.

What’s he been up to since? A whole ton! If you follow Doc on Instagram you’ll regularly see pictures and videos of him jamming with all sorts of folks and gigging out on the town, and then there’s all the killer columns on the state of modern metal he’s been writing for VH1, including the one that incited a near riot on the MetalSucks Podcast.

So it’s a bit ironic that Doc’s biggest project since leaving God Forbid, Vagus Nerve, is one that’s been running since 2011, and half the band’s membership still resides back East. Bands with members thousands of miles apart are becoming more and more commonplace these days, but add to that the fact that new track “Do You Know Who I Am” was mixed by Forrester Savell (Karnivool, Dead Letter Circus) in Australia and this recording’s got some serious mileage on it.

Doc will be the first to admit that Vagus Nerve aren’t a metal band; they describe themselves as “hard rock,” and though I’m not sure that’s fair (this is waaaaay better than Theory of a Deadman or whatever) it’s certainly not capital-M Metal, even though it certainly has metal elements. It’s a solid, catchy track, and God Forbid fans should easily be able to hone in on Coyle’s familiar style.

Vagus Nerve have launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund their first EP, set to be titled Visceral, to which you can contribute here. Perks include the usual assortment of options: digital downloads, CDs, t-shirts, posters, signed items, guitar lessons, and so on and so forth. The band’s very modest goal of $5,000 ends on November 25th.
