Alkaloid’s New Jam “Azagthoth” is a De Facto Tribute to Morbid Angel

“Gee, this song sounds much more like traditional, groovy, and gnarly-sounding death metal than I remember this band playing in the past,” I thought to myself upon pressing play on the new Alkaloid song. For those who need a refresher, Alkaloid — who released their debut album in 2015 — features members and ex-members of Obscura, Spawn of Possession, Noneuclid, Necrophagist, God Dethroned and Aborted… all quite tech-y outfits!

Then I looked at the track name: “Azagthoth.” Ah, now it makes sense! Is this the band’s way of paying tribute to Morbid Angel? The song certainly has plenty of very tech-y elements, to be clear, but it’s also got the aforementioned classic DM nastiness I don’t recall hearing on the band’s first album (though my memory certainly could be selective).

Either way: the song is good. Really good. And there will be more like it on the way when the band releases their new album Liquid Anatomy on May 18th. Check out “Azagthoth” below via Metal Injection and get your inner Morbid Angel on.
