Dance Pop Star Poppy Signs with Sumerian Records, Releases New Single “Concrete”

0

Poppy’s 2018 album Am I a Girl? was one of my favorite records of the year. It was not a metal record — Poppy traffics primarily in dance pop — although one of the album’s tracks, “X,” dabbled in heaviness and gained some traction in our community.

Poppy just released a metal new single, “Concrete,” and that’s not all: she revealed she’s signed with Sumerian Records. Perhaps we should’ve seen this coming, whatwith her recent collaboration with Fever 333 and her upcoming tour with Bring Me the Horizon. So does all this mean Poppy is fully leaning into metal? Who knows, but whatever she’s doing I am here. for. it!

The new single is definitely a metal tune (I wonder who’s in that backing band?) but it’s got Poppy’s trademark robotic delivery and the same naughty/nice dynamic that her previous metal tunes have highlighted. Lyrics like this are sure to deliver the point:

Some people like candy
Some people like coffee
But these lifeless flavors don’t satisfy me
I tried to eat ice cream
I tried to drink tea
But I need the taste of young blood in my teeth

Watch the video for “Concrete” below. Not sure whether a new album is in the works, but for now you can buy/stream the single here.
