Gone Is Gone (Mastodon, At the Drive-In, Queens of the Stone Age) Return with New Song “No One Ever Walked on Water”

To date, I have not really been all that wowed by Gone Is Gone. The project — which includes Troy Sanders (Mastodon), Troy Van Leeuwen (Queens of the Stone Age, ex-A Perfect Circle), Tony Hajjar (At the Drive-In), and Mike Zarin — have been one of many supergroups that doesn’t quite live up to the son of its parts. None of it has been bad… but none of it has been super-memorable, either. It’s mostly sounded like a watered-down version of the bands for which these dudes are primarily known.

Until now! The group’s latest single, “No One Ever Walked on Water,” is a keeper. Unexpectedly, it sounds nothing like previous GIG songs, or previous songs by the members’ other bands, for that matter. It’s got kind of a Depeche Mode vibe. An overwhelming number of machoer-than-macho metal musicians will cop to loving Depeche Mode, so that group’s influence here is not as unthinkable as you may assume. In any case, “Water” has the advantage of not only being catchy as heck, but not living in the shadow of Mastodon et al.
