Watch Metallica Play “Lux Æterna” Live for the First Time
There are still several months left before Metallica kick off their huge world tour in support of 72 Seasons, but the legendary thrash act got the ball rolling on playing new stuff live when they rolled out “Lux Æterna” during their annual Helping Hands Concert & Auction.
And while the song had a bit of a hiccup right off the bat thanks to a cymbal malfunction, the final result was a pretty good sounding version of “Lux Æterna.” James manages to hit the high notes, gets some meaty “YEAHs” out there, and Lars even seems to get the double bass parts down, which is more than most people probably expected.
As for the rest of the night, their set was split between acoustic renditions of classic songs and plugged-in versions. In total, Metallica played 14 songs spanning their career, along with Thin Lizzy and UFO covers in the mix. Avi Vinocur joined in on “All Within My Hands,” which was the acoustic version turned electric, which sounds pretty badass. St. Vincent also joined the band later in the show to sing along to “Nothing Else Matters.”
The “Helping Hands Concert & Auction” was live on Paramount+. For fans outside of the U.S., Variety reports that the event will be available to stream “in the U.K., Latin America, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and France on Saturday, December 17, Australia on Sunday, December 18, and South Korea in 2023. The concert will also be simulcast on Pluto TV globally and on YouTube.”
Greta Van Fleet opened the show and late night host and comedian Jimmy Kimmel emceed the event. In addition to the concert, Metallica auctioned off a number of items, with 100% of the funds generated by ticket and auction sales going directly to the charity’s beneficiaries.
