Year of the Knife’s Madi Watkins Gives First Interview Since Accident

Madi Watkins, beloved vocalist of Year of the Knife, gave her first interview since the band was in a terrifying and nearly fatal van accident last June.

The interview took place on the Hardlore podcast, hosted by Colin Young of God’s Hate and Twitching Tongues and Bo Leuders of Harm’s Way. During the chat, she explains that she has a limited memory of things that happened following the accident, despite the long time she spent in the hospital:

“That’s the weirdest thing about it is I feel like I don’t even remember being at the hospital and I feel like I just remember being back home, which is … I know that there were times in between, but it’s just like, I have no memory of them, which I think is super weird, but maybe a good thing.”

She also admits that when it comes to her recovery, she’s always in a rush to do more and get better quickly:

“There’s a long road ahead, but most of it is just convincing the rest of the band that I’m ready. Because I think sometimes I push them and I’m like, ‘I really want to play,’ and they’re like, ‘Can you?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, let’s practice; let’s do stuff.’ Maybe they’re just being conservative, but I’m just like, ‘Come on; let’s go for it!’

“It took like a long time for all of us, but I think that everybody’s back 100%. The twins were always really really worried. They were like, ‘I don’t know like if you’re going to get back to where you were,’ and I was like, ‘I think I’m better than where I was.’”

Watkins opened up about how great it felt to have so much support following the accident:

“Seeing that, I was just like, ‘Holy shit.’ Even people that we’re not close to were being supportive, and to me I was just like, ‘Damn, we’re so lucky.’ I don’t know if I felt that way before. After that I was like, damn, we really have the support. When we needed it, people were there.”

We’re so glad to hear that Watkins is doing interviews again. You can stream the full thing below:
