Brent Hinds “Won’t Miss Being In A Sh*t Band With Horrible Humans” Following Mastodon Exit
In the three months since guitarist Brent Hinds suddenly quit Mastodon, people have been left speculating about what could have precipitated that exit. He was a founding member of the band after all with just as much skin in the game as any of the other members, so it had to have been something big. And while we’ve still only officially heard from the remaining members of Mastodon about the situation, a recent social media comment from Hinds hints that things weren’t completely amicable when shit finally went down.
In a post on the official Mastodon Instagram page commemorating the 11th anniversary of Once More ‘Round The Sun, a fan said they were “definitely gonna miss B. Hinds” on future releases. Mind you they didn’t directly tag Hinds in their comment, but that didn’t stop the man himself from chiming in and taking a swipe at his former bandmates.
“I want [sic] miss being in a shit band with horrible humans.”
Now, we all know he meant “I won’t” there, so we’ll overlook that little typo. (God knows I’ve had my fair share of those…) Still, that’s a pretty definitive and colorful explanation of his feelings on the matter. No need for some grand statement or self-aggrandizing moment in the press — just a pure, unadulterated reaction from someone that obviously harbors bad feelings about the band he used to play in.
His comment also somewhat contradicts the amicable sounding comment that Mastodon made on Hinds’ departure. At the time, the band said both parties “mutually decided to part ways”, though that doesn’t mean they necessarily parted ways on the best of terms.
It’s the sort of comment you’d expect a band looking to keep its image clean would have wiped away from the record, but it’s still up six hours later. I don’t think Mastodon’s so soft that they’d actually delete his comment, but this is social media in 2025, so anything’s possible. Still, a screenshot of the comment is below for posterity.
In the meantime, Mastodon has decided to continue without Hinds, at first getting YouTuber Ben Eller filling in during their first show without Hinds at Tool’s Live In The Sand. Since then, the band has relied on Nick Johnston to take over for that spot. There’s no new word at this time whether the band’s managed to find a more permanent solution.
