James LoMenzo Says Megadeth Weren’t Asked to Play Black Sabbath’s Final Show

Apparently, Megadeth didn’t get the invite to metal’s biggest farewell party. In a new interview with Japan’s BURRN! magazine, bassist James LoMenzo was asked about Back to the Beginning, Black Sabbath’s upcoming final performance, and why Megadeth was noticeably absent from a lineup that includes the rest of the so-called Big Four.

According to LoMenzo (as transcribed by Blabbermouth), Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax all got the call — but Megadeth didn’t. His reaction?

“I don’t believe anybody asked us, which was fine. Not everyone gets invited to every party.”

Okay then!

LoMenzo went on to say that the band did try to make something happen when they were in the neighborhood:

“But at the same time, when we were in Europe last week, David said that he was reaching out to everybody and telling them that we were in the neighbourhood and that we were close enough to come. And if they wanted us to, we could stay over a few days and work it out….”

That… didn’t work out.

“It didn’t get accomplished.”

Still, LoMenzo doesn’t seem to be taking it personally. He says he was already aware of the show months ago and adds that he has a personal connection to Black Sabbath’s original drummer, Bill Ward — which is more than most of us can say. He also remembers seeing people freak out about the lineup and Megadeth’s absence when it was first announced.

So there you have it. Megadeth didn’t get the nod for Sabbath’s grand finale, but it sounds like they’re not losing sleep over it.
