If Petitioners Get Their Way, You’ll Be Flying High Again from Ozzy Osbourne International Airport

It’s only been a couple days since the world learned of Ozzy Osbourne’s death and people are already looking to memorialize him in ways usually only reserved for fallen monarchs and heads of state. Following his passing, fans launched a petition on Change.org demanding that Birmingham International Airport be renamed to Ozzy Osbourne International Airport.

Started by Dan Hudson, co-host of the podcast A Gay And A Nongay, the petition aims to pay homage to the late “Prince of Darkness” by further connecting him to his hometown of Birmingham, U.K. Never mind that there’s already a Black Sabbath bridge and a push to save the pub where the band played their first show, this could be a major change since the name would also be shown at all airports with connecting flights, as well.

Over on the petition’s page, which you can sign if you’re so inclined, Hudson explained why he felt the airport should be renamed in the first place.

“Ozzy Osbourne was the most important musician ever to hail from Birmingham. He rose to fame as the lead vocalist of the pioneering rock band Black Sabbath, who invented the genre of heavy metal. Ozzy’s influence on music and culture is undeniable. Naming our international airport after him would be a fitting tribute to his extraordinary career and contributions to the arts.

“Other airports in the UK are named after their famous children (George Best International Airport in Belfast, John Lennon Airport in Liverpool) so it is only right that we do this here in Birmingham, in honour of Ozzy. Together, we can celebrate the legacy of Ozzy Osbourne and the incredible influence our city has had on the world stage, thanks to him.”

As of right now, the petition’s received nearly 7,500 verified signatures. It’s unclear how many you’d need to rename an international airport, but it’s definitely a huge show of support for a man we owe the world of heavy metal to.
