Ex-Mastodon Guitarist Brent Hinds Dead at 51 [Update]
What a fucking depressing year for metal, man. In a tragic turn of events, ex-Mastodon guitarist William Brent Hinds was killed last night in a motorcycle accident in Atlanta. He was 51 years old.
According to a report by Atlanta News First, Hinds was riding his motorcycle traveling west along Boulevard when he was struck by an SUV that failed to yield while attempting to make a left-handed turn. When first responders arrived at the scene, Hinds was found unresponsive and was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene by medical officials.
Of course, we all know Hinds for his time in Mastodon. Having been an original member since the band’s inception in 2000, he was a major part of the band’s unique sound and style. Having been featured on every one of the band’s albums, it all came as a shock when he was summarily kicked out of the band back in March.
In the weeks that followed his ousting, Hinds did not hold back on his frustration and anger toward his former bandmates, despite the band’s original statement that all parties “mutually agreed to part ways.”
This is a developing story and we will keep an eye out for more detail.
We at MetalSucks wish to offer our deepest condolences to Hinds’ loved ones and everyone else impacted by this loss.
Update: Mastodon has released a statement on Hinds’ passing:
“We are in a state of unfathomable sadness and grief… last night Brent Hinds passed away as a result of a tragic accident. We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we’ve shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many. Our hearts are with Brent’s family, friends, and fans. At this time, we please ask that you respect everyone’s privacy during this difficult time.”
