Mastiff Channel Some Very Real Loss to Fuel Their Latest Single “A Story Behind Every Light”

You may want to make sure you’ve got a fresh set of Pampers on, because the latest single from grindcore motherfuckers Mastiff is liable to make your insides fall straight out of your asshole.

As the first taste of the band’s forthcoming EP For All the Dead Dreams, out October 24 via Church Road Records, it’s like ingesting a ghost pepper in a room devoid of any milk. It’s just straight to the face heaviness with zero filler involved.

According to the band, the track’s heaviness comes from a very real place of loss and sorrow, which really comes through in just how bleak and harsh the track sounds.

“We picked ‘A Story Behind Every Light’ as the lead single because it pretty unanimously became our favourite track, not just on this EP but in the band’s entire catalogue. It does some pretty heavy lifting thematically, as the song deals with Jim’s very real suicidal ideations in the aftermath of losing his son, but being pulled back from the brink by his daughter. Sonically we were channelling the kind of driving death metal that bands like Gatecreeper do so well, but being us we also threw a couple of skronky meat-head breakdowns in there too.”

Fuck, man. Let’s just say we’re sorry for vocalist Jim Hodge’s loss. Simply can’t imagine the weight of something like that. Still, to take those very dark and real feelings and channel them into a track like this one takes a lot of guts.

Definitely check the track out below. It’s grimy, it’s dirty, it’s heavy, and once you hear the marriage of sludge and hardcore music in this one, it’ll all make sense.

For All the Dead Dreams will be released on October 24.
