Mudvayne’s First New Track in 16 Years “Hurt People Hurt People” Sure is a Song You Can Hear

0

In the early morning hours today, Mudvayne fans waiting 16 years for new music finally got their wish with the unexpected release of their new track “Hurt People Hurt People.” For those folks, this release was a long time coming, but for the rest of us…

Let’s just get the technical stuff outta the way here. The track sounds good, as it should since it was produced by Nick Raskulinecz (Rush, Korn, Alice In Chains, etc.) and mixed by Josh Wilbur (Korn, Megadeth, Gojira, Trivium). It’s their first release under Alchemy Recordings, which also has Staind and Chevelle in their stable. And it’s their first new song since the release of their 2009 self-titled album.

Mudvayne frontamn Chad Gray spoke on the track’s meaning, stating it was all about how you gotta just let shit go after a while.

“I think I wrote this song as a reminder to myself to break the cycle. We create our own suffering, our own hurt. It’s time for us to create self-love and let go of the pain. It was never ours to begin with.”

But to my ears, this doesn’t feel like the Mudvayne people might expect. Maybe you liked it, but if you were hoping a return to the L.D. 50 days, you ain’t getting that. This new song feels like it’s trying to be modern nu-metal, whcih doesn’t really work since you effectively took an insanely proficient and technical band and turned it into an ignorant sounding deathcore band that only knows to chug along on the open E string. Even lyrically, this track is just rudimentary angry shit that a 15 year old would jot on their notebook.

Go listen to “Death Blooms” or “Nothing to Gein” or “Happy?” and then check out the new track below. Night and day, man. Way more interesting and poignant. And sure, 16 years is a long time to expect a band to basically keep their sound 100% in tact, but I’m not sure lapsed fans will latch onto this and I think potential new fans will just keep listening to whatever downtuned deathcore they listen to every day.

Still, I gotta give it to Gray — his vocals sound good. If there’s more new music coming soon, you can at least count on that being good. Here’s hoping the next one will be better.

Starting next month, Mudvayne will be out on tour celebrating 25 years of L.D. 50. You can check that out at any of the dates listed below.
