Sun Dont Shine Release Doomy New Track “What You Are”
The latest single titled “What You Are” from Sun Dont Shine‘s debut album just dropped and it’s about as slow and uncompromising a doom metal march as anything else they’ve ever released.
Out not on all streaming platforms, “What You Are” is described as “familiar shadows, but a new kind of darkness.” And that’s pretty apt, given this is probably the most “doom metal” tracks that they’ve released thus far. It’s slow, it’s plodding, and it’s worthy of you nodding along to its five-minute runtime. Speaking of the track itself, guitarist/bassist Todd Strange explained how the sound came to be.
“This is our modern interpretation of the music we grew up on.”
Previously known as Eye Am, Sun Dont Shine is comprised of former Type O Negative members Kenny Hickey as the band’s frontman and Johnny Kelly on drums, along with Crowbar frontman Kirk Windstein and Strange handling guitar and bass respectively, the band has been slowly releasing singles from their upcoming debut LP.
Andrew Spauling, of Corpse Paint Records, praised Sun Dont Shine’s output as of late, with “What You Are” standing out, in particular.
“‘What You Are’ hits with that classic weight — dark, slow, and unrelenting — but there’s something fresh in the way it breathes. Todd brought in the main riff, and it set the tone for what became one of the band’s most fully realized songs. This one really captures the spirit of SUN DONT SHINE: familiar shadows, but a new kind of darkness.”
In addition to the new track, Sun Dont Shine is giving fans a chance to get their names printed in the liner notes as a thank you for supporting the band.
