The summer’s only sorta over. Sure, Labor Day’s passed, but what’s stopping you from taking a half day, going somewhere nice, and ruining the vibes for everyone else by blasting some new metal music loud as hell? You owe it to yourself.

Ambush

Evil In All Dimensions (Napalm Records)

Featuring a classic heavy metal style that’s easy to connect with, this Swedish band brings back the 80s in a way that feels sincere and not pandering like other acts. Dueling guitar solos, soaring vocals, driving rhythms… it all makes for a headbanging, horn-throwing good time.

Dark Angel

Extinction Level Event (Reversed Records)

After more than three decades away, Dark Angel is back with a new release. Though Jim Durkin is no longer with us, the band is forging forward with this slate of new tunes. Whether you like what they’ve put out or not is up to you, though reactions have been mixed. Either way, it’s worth listening to if you want to see what these guys can churn out 34 years after their last effort.

Green Carnation

A Dark Poem, Part I: The Shores of Melancholia (Season Of Mist)

This album is the ambitions beginning to a three-part trilogy of prog metal releases. Promising grand storytelling and epic musicianship, The Shores of Melancholia has a push and pull feel to it that drags the listener through the good times and the bad and it’s all in service of the narrative they’re trying to tell.

Nailed To Obscurity

Generation Of The Void (Nuclear Blast)

Touted as the band’s “most mature and expansive album to date,” this new effort from German melodic doom/death metal band is celebrating its 20th year as a band by releasing Generation Of The Void. It’s rife with political and social commentary and deals with some very dark and personal emotions along the way. It’s disillusionment in aural form and you already know if that vibe is for you.

Tallah

Primeval: Obsession // Detachment (Earache Records)

Nu metal isn’t dead. It just went and decided to go do its own damn thing, rather than conform to the wills of your MTVs and the like. Case and point is Tallah, whose new album is being described as their “most ambitious and uncompromising work to date.” This time around, they’ve got a sci-fi narrative living in this album that feels natural in its delivery. And that’s by design, because producerJosh Schroeder made sure the band used no clicks, no edits, and everything was recorded live, so you get the rawest listening experience possible — warts, fuck ups, and all.
