Have Eight Hours to Kill? Watch This YouTuber Play All of Tool’s Music on Drums in One Take
Ah, the boundless energy of youth. To be a teenager and still have the energy and vigor to do things like “pursuing your passions” and “not being a hollowed out husk of a human after decades of exploitation.” Must be nice. At least that’s mostly what crossed my mind when I saw this YouTuber named Tyler Visser attempt playing the entire Tool discography on drums in a single take.
To pull something like that off, you gotta be good at drums, obviously. But it also takes effort and coordination on his part as well. Gotta get the right shots to show he’s actually playing and all that. Oh and he’s gotta have the physical ability to sit and play drums at a high level for more than seven-and-a-half hours! And just to prove he did it all in a single take, he posted a second video showing the “drum cam” footage, showing a different angle and without any editing embellishments or shenanigans like that.
In the video’s description, Visser admitted that there were some mistakes in his playing, which like… yeah, man. You’re trying to do something not even Danny Carey’s done…
“My attempt at drumming through TOOL’s discography in one take. I want to thank my family and friends for the endless support! I also want to thank everyone else for taking the time to share this experience with me. I have definitely gained a greater level of appreciation for the compositional work of Danny Carey and TOOL. Although I do not do Danny complete justice, being able to move past mistakes is something I learned. While I wish I could go back to fix things, I also feel a sense of accomplishment being able to complete something that was once just an idea.”
Truth be told though, he did every Tool song except for two oddities — “Sweat” and “Disgustipated” because of copyright concerns. Other than that, we’re talking 59 tracks, front to back and spanning more than 30 years. It’s not like Carey lets up in his playing, either. I mean, “Pneuma” was on the band’s latest album Fear Inoculum, already several hours into a grueling endurance test.
So if you’re looking for something to eat up your workday, here it is. Enjoy.
