Bonginator
Retrodeath (Testimony Records)
Cannab-listering death metal is how I’d describe Bonginator’s sophomore studio effort. These guys know how to rip shit up while referring to various bits of pop culture. Some killer guest spots stand out on this one, including Fulci, Belushi Speed Ball, and Big Ass Truck to name a few. Crack open a Mountain Dew and play it loud.
Conjurer
Unself (Nuclear Blast)
Heavy as fuck, this latest effort from Conjurer doesn’t let up at all. The band claim Unself is “a record that we have put everything of ourselves into, in a way that we didn’t think possible for this band.” And true to their word, this is a deeply unique effort that only these dudes could release into the world.
Leprous
An Evening Of Atonement (InsideOutMusic)
It’s not often we include a live album in these lists, but Leprous’ show is something to behold. These guys are so good at what they do that it’s worth hearing them perform live.
Serj Tankian
Covers, Collaborations & Collages (Serjical Strike Records/Create Music Group)
Activist, musician, poet… Serj Tankian has a certain artistic style that you either vibe with or you don’t. This new solo release is a passion project for Tankian, who called it a “deeply personal and eclectic body of work.” Over the last few weeks he’s been releasing tracks, so if you’re a fan, you’ve probably already heard the album. Still, it’s worth checking this one out if you’d like to take a dive into Tankian’s mind.
Soulfly
Chama (Nuclear Blast)
I mean, come on. Riffs on riffs. Pummeling Brazilian-inspired rhythms. That certain Max Cavalera flavor. It’s all undeniably cool and undeniably Soulfly. It’s the sort of no-bullshit, take no prisoners approach you’d expect from a Cavalera project.
