Anyone have ‘Mike Patton and The Avett Brothers release a collab album’ on their bingo card? Because this is one of those things that you hear someone talking about it and your mind just goes “there’s no fuckin’ way.” But it’s here and it’s real and it’s trippy as fuck.

Bell Witch & Aerial Ruin

Stygian Bough, Vol. II (Profound Lore)

As the title suggests, this is the second time that Bell Witch and Aerial Ruin have collabed to create Stygian Bough. If you need something slow and heavy to just vibe to, this is the epic funeral doom album that’ll speak directly to your soul.

Fimbul Winter

What Once Was (Profound Lore)

Featuring former Amon Amarth members, this Swedish melodic death metal band once again references deep Norse lore. This is the very first EP release from the band, so if you fuck with them right now you’re getting in on the ground floor.

The Devil Wears Prada

Flowers (Solid State Records)

Fuckin…oof. Not every album we highlight on this weekly feature necessarily has to be a good one. Flowers is one of those albums that falls shy of the “good” category. For a band that used to traffic exclusively in metalcore fury, they’re taking the pop/electronic route and god damn, it’s just… not great. Yikes.

The Grasshopper Lies Heavy

Heavy (Learning Curve Records)

Sometimes when I close my eyes listening to this band, I get moments where I swear I’ve got a Mastodon track playing. There’s a groove in the wrath displayed by this group that’s undeniable. It’s definitely trying to grasp you by the ear lobes and force you to pay attention — and that’s a good thing.
