Dave Davidson of Revocation’s Top Albums of 2025

(Editor’s note: Looking back on 2025, there were so many good albums released that we decided to reach out to some of today’s artists and get them to weigh in on their favorites. What follows is Archspire guitarist Tobi Morelli’s ‘Top Albums of 2025.)

2025 was another great year for metal. It’s inspiring to see bands both new and veteran continuing to push the envelope in extreme music. Here are my top five albums of the year, in no particular order.

Cryptopsy — An Insatiable Violence

Cryptopsy is back in a big way. I feel like they’ve recaptured the chaos of earlier albums with this release. Flo [Mounier] is a goddamn animal on this one, delivering some of the wildest drum performances of his entire career, and that’s saying something. If you’re hungry for violence, Cryptopsy is serving up an all-you-can-eat buffet.

Compulsed — Amalgamated Anguish

Brutal death metal has been having quite the resurgence lately and Compulsed are one of the best new bands on the scene to fly the flag of brutality. They groove, they gurgle and they’ve got a ton of creative riffage that will keep you engaged the whole way through. If you like your slam with a side of sophistication, I compel you to check this album out.

Barren Path — Grieving

Grindcore from ex-Gridlink members. Twelve tracks of pure adrenaline and not a single song clocks in over two minutes. This is how it’s done.

Car Bomb — Tiles Whisper Dreams

The Car Bomb boys return with this psychotic EP, chock full of brain bending rhythms that only these madmen can deliver. The playing is ungodly tight but still feels organic at the same time. There’s several sections that are so insane they feel downright psychedelic. It’s like Meshuggah on acid, truly mind melting.

Suffering Hour — Impelling Rebirth

Unhinged blackened death from these Minnesota riff lords. This EP didn’t get the attention it deserved, give it a spin. Shit RIPS!
