GWAR Break A.V. Undercover Record with Absurdly Perfect “Pink Pony Club” Cover

0

In the world of uniquely unexpected pairings, there are few that stand out more than the love fest that exists between A.V. Club and the mighty GWAR. For years now, the band has gone on their ‘A.V. Undercover’ webseries to cover songs from artists you wouldn’t expect, like Billy Ocean, Kansas, and even a track from the Barbie soundtrack.

Well, today marks yet another entry in that partnership, only this time they tap their inner baby girl with their version of Chappel Roan’s “Pink Pony Club.” And while that may not seem like the most GWAR-y thing to cover, The Berzerker Blöthar explained exactly why they opted to handle the supremely poppy track.

“‘Pink Pony Club’ is about embracing exile from a boring, shitty world and remaking yourself into whatever you want—be who you are, be who you aren’t, piss people off, we don’t care!”

Though their version starts off kind of sticking to that pop sound, as expected with GWAR things go wildly off the rails. Gone is the glitter and glitz of the original tune — traded for the manic monstrosity and sensory assault that only our Lords and Masters have provided humanity for the last four decades.

This is also a record-setting performance, as they’re the first band to be featured on ‘A.V. Undercover’ for a seventh time. Their appearances date back to the days of Oderus Urungus fronting the band, which if you haven’t checked out the times he handled some of those covers, you really ought to. Those were fucking awesome.

Danette Chavez, Editor-in-Chief of The A.V. Club, said today’s video was a natural highlight for the series’ 10th season.

“As we put together the song list for A.V. Undercover season 10, we knew this iconic pairing had to happen. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate this landmark season of Undercover than seeing GWAR on the stage in their heels hooves, singing ‘Pink Pony Club.’”
