Randy Blythe on How Lamb Of God’s New Album Title is Based on the Current State of Everything

0

I don’t know if you’ve noticed the news lately, but things are… not going great. People are seriously pissed off, whether you’re Pro-Trump or not. Doesn’t matter. There’s talk about civil war, folks are purchasing weapons that never thought to do so before. It feels like we’re headed to a dangerous precipice.

And apparently, it’s that very same dangerous precipice that led to Lamb Of God naming their 12th full-length studio effort Into Oblivion. According to frontman Randy Blythe, who shared this tidbit when the album was announced, it’s all about the state of things:

“Because that’s where we’re heading. In general, the album is about the ongoing and rapid breakdown of the social contract, particularly here in America. Things are acceptable now that would’ve horrified people just 20 years ago.”

During a recent interview with Kerrang!, Blythe went further in his critiques and explained further how the album’s title came to be. And while he and his wife have significantly reduced their consumption of the internet, what news and information Blythe’s seen in recent history has left him feeling less than positive, to say the least:

“I am not happy with the way the world is right now. We are careening towards some sort of crash, and there are people who not only recognize this, but are trying to hasten it in order to profit from it. [With] the distribution of wealth, the gap is getting wider and wider and wider and wider. I don’t just think that’s true: that’s a fact. We need to learn how important we are to one another. Because the super-rich aren’t going to help you.”

Based.

Blythe also said in the interview that we’re living in “the moment at which empires fall.” Ominous, I know, but look at empires like France and you’ll see vast wealth inequality driving people to stuff the powerful head first into guillotines.

“We’ve seen this again and again and again. So without sounding too doomsday-ish, I think we’re in late-stage capitalism, and I don’t think it’s going to end well. There are obscenely wealthy people dictating policy, whose only concern is enriching themselves.”

Though it may all sound like doom and gloom, Blythe elsewhere in the Kerrang! interview discusses how dropping the internet for inter-personal connection in local communities can push society to a more positive outcome. If you’d like to read the whole thing, you should absolutely head over to Kerrang! to do so.
