Jim Root on the New Slipknot Record: “I Want to Make a Raw Album”
For OG Slipknot fans, there’s no denying that some of their earliest work was their heaviest. It was just pure, authentically raw metal. And as fans, we know it isn’t always easy for bands to keep up this level of innovation since some end up slipping through the cracks. However, Slipknot guitarist Jim Root isn’t settling for anything on their upcoming eighth studio record. He has bigger plans.
In an interview with the Turning Wrenches podcast, Jim Root speaks about the direction he hopes to take on Slipknot’s new record. He admits that he “wants to make a raw album.” Pointing towards the band’s critically acclaimed 1999 debut studio album and 2001 Iowa records for reference.
“I would like to revisit the raw energy of how those first two records were recorded and even into the Vol. 3 record [from 2004]… There’s just something really stripped down and punk rock about it and I think we’ve been missing that on our past few records and I think it’s time to get back to that in some ways.”
The last Slipknot album was their 2022 The End, So Far, which featured major tracks such as “The Dying Song (Time To Sing), “Yen” and “Hive Mind” to name a few. The record had to fill some pretty large boots after their 2019 We Are Not Your Kind was received with flying colors. Now, the band are working towards their next record and Root has confirmed that he has “six finished arrangements,” already.
Until then, the metal nine-piece is gearing up to travel across Europe for 16 days. They’ll be joined by Motionless in White, Polaris and Soft Play for select dates. Fans can purchase tickets here.
