Cobalt and Man’s Gin’s Erik Wunder Dead at 42
Erik Wunder — best known as the mastermind behind the genre-defying acts Cobalt and Man’s Gin — has died at the age of 42.
Wunder first emerged on the scene with Cobalt in 2003, laying down drums, vocals, bass, and guitars across the band’s acclaimed discography. Over the years, Cobalt earned a reputation as one of the most adventurous and aggressive blackened sludge projects in the U.S. scene. Wunder later expanded his musical reach with Man’s Gin, a project that explored shadowy Americana, haunted folk, and elements of post-rock without ever losing that signature raw edge.
The news of Wunder’s passing was shared by Profound Lore Records earlier this week, who released records from both Cobalt and Man’s Gin. The label kept their tribute short and emotional, posting:
“’The world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are strong at the broken places’ – Ernest Hemingway. REST IN POWER Erik Wunder of Cobalt/Man’s Gin… you goddamn outlaw. Wow, what a ride…”
Wunder leaves behind a discography that’s as intense as it is unpredictable. You owe it to yourself to dive into it in remembrance.
Rest in power, Erik Wunder.
