Dirk Verbeuren Pays Homage to His Mother in Bent Sea’s Latest Single “My Fall”
What do you get when you take Megadeth drummer Dirk Verbeuren, Aborted vocalist Sven de Caluwé, and Napalm Death bassist Shane Embury and put them all into a single project? Well, you get Bent Sea, a new project that’s set to release their debut album The Dormant Ruin on September 5.
Add Venomous Concept and ex-Brutal Truth frontman Kevin Sharp on one of that album’s tracks, however, and you’ve got their latest single “My Fall”, which serves as a tribute to Verbeuren’s late mother.
During a recent interview with Decibel, Verbeuren explained how the memory of his mother played such a key role in putting the song together.
“‘My Fall’ was inspired by something my mom said when she was facing the end of her life. Her words were totally heartbreaking, yet beautiful and poetic. They stuck with me and inspired me to write a song celebrating her life.
“Growing up, my mom was very supportive of me and always willing to listen. I’ll never forget how much she enjoyed hearing me practicing drums for hours on end. Other parents might have said ‘it’s been enough now,’ but she never did. Later on, even as her hearing started to fail, she and my dad would still come listen to me play live whenever possible. Her positive energy and radiant smile inform every single one of my days.”
The project’s previous single “A Scopic Radiance” is a hare to this new single’s tortoise. The former is a blistering blast beat-laden death metal kick to the teeth, while this new one is slow and crunchy. When you consider Sharp’s involvement in the track, however, Verbeuren says it makes total sense.
“I’m a huge fan of Brutal Truth. Musically, this song is inspired by Need To Control, my favorite record of theirs. When I asked Kevin Sharp if he would record vocals for ‘My Fall,’ he immediately agreed, and did an absolutely stellar job bringing my words to life. I couldn’t be happier with how this song turned out. And I know that my mom is listening somewhere, proud and happy.”
The Dormant Ruin will be released on September 5 via Give Praise Records.
