Metallica Gets Support to Play the Super Bowl from… Usher?
For a long time now, Super Bowl half-time shows have been tame as fuck. Safe, risk-averse, cowardly performances that don’t always scream “big dudes running at each other at high speeds and hitting one another for millions of peoples’ enjoyment.” And apparently, the same can be said by R&B superstar, Usher, becuase he apparently thinks Metallica should play the “Big Game.”
This little tidbit of information comes courtesy of TMZ, who ran into Usher while he was out and about — as they’re wont to do. And though they peppered the eight-time Grammy winner and previous Super Bowl performer with a variety of questions, he was eventually asked who he’d like to see play the major event. And while he was being whisked away into a car, he turned back to the camera and said “Metallica.”
Now, that’s not really all that shocking. There’s been a groundswell of support for ‘Tallica to play the Super Bowl for a while now. And while they played Super Bowl-adjacent gigs in the past, they’ve never been to the big stage. Given the fact that their hometown of San Francisco has been to the Super Bowl multiple times in recent years, it only seems right that a band like Metallica would get to perform.
Past rock acts that have gotten to play on that grand stage include Slash, Aerosmith, No Doubt, Kid Rock, Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, The Who, and the most recent band or artist to fit this category… The Red Hot Chili Peppers all the way back in 2014.
Let’s be real here though. We’re gonna get a Taylor Swift half-time show since she’s soon to be another Kelce.
